Rich, congratulations to you and the team! She’s come on superbly. I’m disappointed I couldn’t make it to see her run.
Looks great to me, Roobarb. Now if only 947 had a Rebbeca antenna… 😉
Looking Good. I hear their FW190A is being shipped there this week. I understand that one will be flown.
I must admit, Mark, the more I look at the photographs the more I believe your hypothesis is the correct one. Certainly the the BW aerial pic looks conclusive!
To be fair to Ed, he is going on recollections of an event that happened over 50 years ago.
Thanks to the power of camera phones I can now re-report Ed’s desription of events as he remembers it.
He didn’t witness the crash but visited the evening it came down. He’s certain of several things:
First, that he reached the crash site by walking along the lane between Calmont Rd and Warren Avenue (marked C below) and which is now more overgrown than back then.
That the Ravensbourne river/canal bank was nearby, to the a/c’s left (port wing) and was around 20-50 feet away.
I’ve marked his description and location out in red below.
I asked him to go online and read the thread and he makes the following comments.
The building mentioned on Mark’s diagram at ‘B’ (‘A’ on my map) is the old Summerhouse of Beckenham Park and was demolished “donkey’s years ago.”
That the Pavilion at B on my map is the one he mentioned was demolished. The building there now is about five years old.
I also pitched Mark’s version to him (I’ve marked that in Yellow) and while he doesn’t feel that matches what he remembers, he admits his memory might not be perfect.

Hello all, I’ll pester Ed about it again, ASAP.
Speaking for myself, looking at the cropped shot Mark12 posted. Look at the shadows, they’re pretty long. Assuming this was taken later that evening (in September) then they’d point east-south east roughly. So SL’s nose must be pointing east(ish). That would put Calmont Rd/Warren Ave at the Photographers back. The crowd shot seems to bear that out.
Just to throw another possibillty out there…. Flying prop debris? I know three uniform holes would make it unlikely but still…
That puts us back to my post of the 2nd Dec 22.12 I stake my claim and also the prize for the “spot the ghost of 574 competition”
Thank god we have not got to dig it up.
Can we get on to Lord Lucan now.Jayce your FIL name of Ravensbourne Park may be a bit confusing does he mean the area now called Shortlands Golf Course.
Many thanks for the help with this. PC
Pobjoy, pulling up GE again to see what he pointed to tells me the official name is Warren Avenue Playing Fields. I gather that to Ed it’s always been Ravensbourne Park. He tells me he used to play football there as a boy and enter via the lane between Calmont Roand and Warren Avenue, (mentioned in my first post). Looking at the pictures Mark12 posted, I’d expect thats Warren Avenue in the background and the high ground is Bromley Hill.
Hi again all. I spoke to Ed again yesterday and asked him if he could tell me more than he did last time and clarify a few things.
He more or less repeated what he told me last time but did add a few details.
It definetly wasn’t in the old Summerhouse field (the one west of the millwall training ground) but below it at the north west end of whats now Ravensbourne Park and it had come to a stop near the canal bank. He’s not on reflection certain it was as close as twenty feet but definetely no more than 50.
Welcome to the forum and thanks Jayce
No Problem.
All pure conjecture of course 😀 – any comments Jayce ?are you fairly local ?
rgds baz
Sorry no. Derbyshire born and bred. My father-in-law however is a Bromley man. The missus, not so much!
You’re right though, that location seems to fit with what Ed, my FIL, told me.
Think you might have confused me with someone, as I’m Rich, but thanks anyway.
The Long Marston Shackleton is still there and in no better state than she was a few years back.
Regards,
Rich
Ooops! Sorry Rich, I sort of did! Chalk it up to posting at 3am…
…and the Chez Vegas location tag. :p
Nevermind Chris, she’s looking lovely regardless. I saw the rather sad state of her sister at Long Marston a few years ago and I’m just relieved to see one being looked after so well.
Keep up the good work!
PP, I believe he meant the Ravensbourne River but he refers to it as “the canal”.
Well you got there in the end (not quite there yet though) and this is what puzzled me looking at the original image of 574 with the cricketers in the background.
When i looked at the Google image of the same area it did not quite match up.
Several clues then have to be assembled to solve the problem.
What is now Millwall’s training ground shows a pavillion/club alongside .
Hi folks long time lurker but though I’d sign in for the mo’ as I can help a little here.
My father-in-law grew up in the area and I first heard this story from him. He went to visit the crash site as a boy. I emailed him about it hoping he could share some more details and he was kind enough to phone me over the weekend and tell me a little more.
Unfortunately he didn’t actually witness the crash landing but did state the the Spit had come to rest at the southern end of the cricket field, in his words; “20 feet more and he’d have been in the canal.”
Knowing pobjoy was interested in the specific location I asked him if knew if the cricket field was still there. According to him, it is, but is now disused and overgrown, the pavilion was demolished many years ago. It lies at the north end of Ravensbourne Park. There is a lane onto the pitch from Calmont road but its quite overgrown now.
HTH.
