Boscombe Down had an incident back in September 1994 some sort of secret jet crashed on take off, base closed all public roads around base closed etc.

America had some sort of involvment with the plane, anyway just do a web search for “Boscombe down incidnet” and you can find lots of info and storys etc.
the Lightning T4 gate gaurd they seem more than happy to let you.

Me and a couple of mates were there on that very day, having driven up from the air show at Nancy. Unfortunately , one of my mates had a call from his wife who had been taken ill and we had to depart much earlier than we should’ve, weather was complete pants so we were’nt that bothered. It happened (allegedly) in the early evening in the dark. Certainly there didnt appear to be any extra security in place and we could park and photograph with no probs, leading me to think that whatever did (allegedly) crash there was landing from a divert or pan call. Certainly AFM wnt to town about it….

Best thread ever!! Fantastic stuff and thanks for taking the time to scan these wonderful images – very much appreciated 😉 Could I ask what scanner/software you use and how much time it takes to scan an “average” slide? I have plenty of my fathers and uncles slides that I would like to share with you of similar subjects…

aaah i see, they keep flying over where i live (just up the road from lakenheath), and i wasn’t sure if they were visitors or just in for an exercise.

are they based at lakenheath, or have they taken over from the CH-53’s at mildenhall?

They moved in from Keflavik a little while ago ,and they’re USAF MH60 Pave Hawks rather than Army Black Hawks. CH53s departed a long time ago, big choppers (ooh er missus) at Mildy are MH53M Pave Low IIIs and will remain in situ. The MH60 re-location to LN is a little odd with a better special ops infrastructure at Mildy.. oh hum…

Oh and BTW, the F5E on Alconbury’s gate is a plastic replica 🙁

Folks its has been mentioned on several threads and there is now an update on the General Aviation thread on this forum.

Please dont start having a moan about lack of publicity etc etc, this has been put together by a few small group of aviation minded folks. We are aware that the Airport has received some bad press and yes hopefully this can redress the balance a bit. We are all learning as we go along and there are already many things we could and would have done differently. Plaese remember this is not a Cosford, it is not a full blown display, but we believe there are enough items of interest to make it a pleasant day out – who wouldnt want to take a trip above a Steam railway in an aircraft from the same period!!

We plan to have gates open to the public from 9.30, £5 per car all day including all occupants (the majority of the car park money will be going to the air ambulance.) I will update you when I know about the times for the Spitfire.

This is our first event of this type and Im sure it will be a little rough around the edges but who knows what may grow from small acorns.

    😉

Thanks for that Olly, I must admit I never look at the GA forum and do realise your’re not a “Cosford” yet!!?? Just that some general info to other aviation related forums could have been of benefit. If you pm me with some more info (again lacking on the project propellor site) I could certainly distribute via various media.

I can see the HG circuit sitting here… It hasn’t been in any of the local rags (or if it has I haven’t seen it… )

    I’ll be there, but thousands won’t… 🙁

    Nige

    Ditto

Properly advertised and sold, this could have been a valuable PR tool against the “no fly zone” mob who are against all development of HG/Bobbington/Wolverhampton Business Airport etc etc…
Cosford had a sell out crowd for their show so the West Mids catchment area has an obvious demand for all events air-related…

Theres been absolutely f all publicity for this event and even after searching I’ve found only this thread about it. What time gates open?????? etc Pretty poor if you want public to support it and the very deserving charities involved.

Westland had a Licensed Private Venture turbine powered prototype based on the CH-37 called the Westminster if memory serves. The project was cancelled when Westland’s took over Fairey and continued with the Rotadyne (Which was then cancelled as well).

It only used the rotor head and gearbox though, it looked nothing like a ’37 Westland redesigned the fuselage to incorporate the engines ahead of the gearbox and the rear fuselage was of tubular construction a la Bell 47

One of my favourites was the Lockheed AH56 Cheyenne. Remarkable for so many things, in particular as it was Lockheed’s firts and only foray into rotorcraft and it handled superbly. U.S. Army decided they wanted a smaller chopper (feel the same way  :diablo: ) and began another fly off thta resulted in the Apache.
Shame as thing would have been awesome…!

Off ebay I picked up 2 interesting finds.
One is a VHS video called “Sky spectacular” consisting of 3 films – the first is from Biggin Hill BoB display 1974 – no commentary just music and sound bites (John Blake quips etc) great images of lightning F1, Phantoms, Vulcan, Nimrod, Victor, Poachers, Rothmans (the intended subject matter),and the superb and frighteneing Slivers Belgian AF F104 duo. Second is a film about the Rothmans displaying in Spain (1980 ish with Pitts) and the 3rd is the famous Concorde first flight footage with Mr Baxter on the mike “she flies she flies”…

The other is a profesionally produced cine film of Farnboro’76 that should have sound but when it was transferred onto VHS (at horrendous cost!) it was silent. Not very long but some good images on there.

Off ebay Ive picked up several air show vids – many from the states from the ’80s and it was good to get a copy of the Coventry UK confederate show from ’88.

I’d love to see those old shows 1970s shows available – not just Biggin but many other shows were broadcast. Finningley 77 – the Silver Jubilee Review would be my most requested – BBC covered that quite well including the then defence minister (Mulley??) fast asleep next to the Queen as the RAF’s finest were doing their stuff 😡

Don’t know if this one has been posted, from THM. Surprised that nobody has posted a photo of a Victor tanker as they had a bit of dayglo on them.

Don’t worry – the Argosy is, according to what I was told, going into Hangar 1 after the Cold War exhibition has opened

Cheers for that – phew! thought another unique airframe had bitten the dust.

Air Support Command formd in 1967 as the renamed Transport Command, absorbed into Strike Command in 1972. I presume you’re after the transport types that the RAF flew in the 70s?
Hercules, Belfast, Comet, Brittania, Argosy, Andover, VC10 were the main types. Though only the Herc and VC10 remained after 1976, along with a very few Andovers. The RAF displayed all the types at airshows !
