    not really aerobatic

just cuban eights and barrel rolls – and the pilot is highly professional and the Morane is a though little fighter.

    Martin

Mmmmm… I must question your definition of “aerobatic” cuban eights and barrel rolls are very aerobatic. No doubting the aircrafts or the pilots capabilities – just the need.

    Hi Dave

the Morane D-3801 (Swiss Licence built Morane MS-506, a development of the MS-406) is owned by the same person that owns the P-51D N51EA; Max Vogelsang – he flew both aircraft that day – the Morane in the morning and the P-51D mid-afternoon.

    Martin

Looks great – cant wait for Payerne – looks a lot better show than Waddington (!)
As usual one thing troubles me – It seems as though they are aerobatting the Morane – why oh why do they do this with such priceless, unique birds ????

😡 To continue my smugness and cynicism-…. yeah whatever

I do not read the forum every day and only picked up on this thread late last night on my steam powered pc that takes an age to download and therefore didnt manage to even get to page 2 of the post. In hindsight I was a little premature in responding but I just thought that I would add my comments before the wrong people pick up on them. I know that members of gutter press trowel these forums looking for stories about nothing and paint a poor picture of warbird maintenance, airshow “disasters”, near misses etc etc. Given the BBMFs recent problems I thought it prudent to add a possible solution to the spits sick sounding engine. My comments were meant in good faith and I thought I was addressing enthusiasts that knew what a throttled back Merlin sounds like.

When you respond to people with personal titles and addresses that refer to merlins, one assumes that that person knows a bit about the subject.

Getting back to the first post, “a sick sounding Spit low in the Coningsby circuit”, EVERY spit sounds sick when its throttled back, downwind in a circuit -its a Merlin and Griffon speciality with all the coughing and spluttering. Are we just jumping to conclusions here and lloking for a non-story??!!

Hi Kodak, you must have been there too. Did you get any shots?

If only I had ! – I just research special schemes and that is a special scheme legend!! I’m amazed how well my memory has served after reading the actual artists’ story on that link (thanks Swiss Mustangs!)
I will dig and see if I can find an image – or any other stuff

    …and very tastefully done.

It looks like an ex Czech A/F trainer to me, but others will surely know.

Taken at the Roudnice Airshow, near Prague, in June 1993.

This was a marvellous show. The ‘velvet revolution’ was rolling. Guy Black’s Spitfire TE566, in full post-war Czech livery, was the star of the show. The Czech RAF veterans were there in force to be rightfully honoured after the post war persecutions – tear jerking stuff.

Steve was this the time that #1 Squadron was based at Tangmere?

Noooo! Wittering -1976 – squadron exchange with French EC1/2 flying Mirage IIIEs at Dijon. RAF had painted a rather rude rendition of a cartoon harrier doing “things” with the stork of the French units insignia on the fin of a Mirage. AFter a night of debauchery the RAF crews were bussed to the apron to see that their French “comrades” had paid back the honour. The T2 had
its camouflage replaced with 3 coats of pink and white complete with eyelashes, red spirals and white blotches on any remaining camo! What made it worse was that the paint was emulsion rather than the agreed washable stuff!!

Just a detail point but not all Harrier displays are the same. Up to last year at least, the RAF Harrier was not allowed to do the very steep climb from the hover that the RN Sea Harrier has been doing for some years. I gather the Sea Harrier has slightly more thrust (for operation of carriers perhaps) and the RAF were wary of emulating this.

The GR7 and AV8B have 250 pounds extra thrust than the SHAR and with that big wing, much improved lift. The steep “Farley” climb has always been a part of both Harriers display routine. The RAF displays are longer with more “conventional flight” passes- I wouldnt say that the SHAR is a better display at all, unless its a 2 ship!!

Hatton – not the first time Waddington have had 3 Tornado displays each day, I went when the Thunderbirds were there. I also found that seeing 8, sorry 9 (just checked) Tornado’s lined up in the static – all grey or green, somewhat dull, I seem to remember some 5 x F16’s as well. I found out later that they had turned down other aircraft for the static, mainly vintage stuff, as they “had no room left for static aircraft” – still I suppose as its the RAF’s show they can pack it with what they see fit. However they did have many good items there as well!

Quite the reverse this year as the static was padded out with JPs and other vintage stuff – all very welcome but not in such great numbers (or bizarre schemes!)This is the RAFs major show (apparantly, but having a quick look at the Leuchars web site -they have a much better variety of military visitors) and should be a NATO show case . I think it was a very weak show this year.

I think its great to see special schemes on military aircraft. Major anniversaries ( the German Navies 90th and the squadrons 40th in these cases plus the fact that this is their last year of operating fjs) should be a time of celebration and a bit of chance for some national pride. These days absolutely everything inc trainers, transports, liaison types etc are going grey and they all look the same. Big grey blobs the lot of ’em. God bless the Germans, French and Italians (in the main) for adding a splash of colour in these depressingly lo-viz times.
