I’m rather confused here!!!
It would appear that ‘328 is now part of Wartons test fleet, but the colours?? Arthurs image does indeed show a very non-rippled torn but it looks as though its in camo rather than greys. If BAE have repainted it since June last when it was definitely ripple why paint it camo ? if indeed that is the case
Any one… please!?
Wish them all the best and the crowd up at Scampton.
If either fly lets hope they are painted in (partic in ‘897s case) an accurate, authentic colour scheme that reflects their and the RAFs/RNs/MoD proud heritage and not reduced to a mere pretty circus act for the ice cream lickers/wind break and deck chair brigade.
ZA328 has been in”ripple” scheme all its life – since 1982!
ZA354 is based at Warton as part of BAe’s test fleet. Probably the last flying Tonka in camo plus it still has the lovely light grey undersides of the 70s!! sooperb!!
Standard BOZ chaff pod but not a cereberus. Its a sky shadow -these are frequently converted into camera pods for filming weapon releases.
Big load outs are frequently flown by the test fleet for aerodynamic reasons – as said they’re operational use in such configurations are very limited!
Yep, lets face it, the ONLY operational Aurora a/c!!!
Nice to see a nice old hi-viz one before that godawful greying epidemic 😡
Complete and utter fake – I recall seeing it in a UFO magazine during the alleged “aurora” sightings mid ’90s. Image is quite clearly a couple of LN or UH ‘varks performing a mock AAR flyby at Mildenhall or the like with an easy to produce black triangle masked in.
If this was an ultra secret test flight why would 2 F111s be so close to the formation?
Nonsense!!
Re “Great aeroplane the ‘104…..
But the Lightning was better……
Absolutely firebird!! but not at mud moving!
Thought Kriegsmarine was a purely WW2 term?, Marineflieger being more appropriate. There was talk that they went thru’ the barrier during practice at IAT ’85 -dont recall a boom though they certainly were motoring!
Canadian 4 and 5 ships were also very memorable and the Dutch always flew a great solo.
Think the problem of NATO ‘104 losses has been put down to aircrew rather than machine. Young, inexperienced pilots used to F84s,F86s and Hunters suddenly had their hands on a Mach 2 hot rod and were asked to fight on the deck all the way to 60k’ in europes crowded and frequently cloudy skies. A million miles from the role it had been intended for- intercepting soviet bombers in the crystal clear skies of ConUS, flown by Korean veteran crews who also had some supersonic jet (F100/101/102) experience. Incidentally, the Spanish flew them for 10 years in the fighter role without loss.
Zipper may be fast but its not a lightning !! Read tales of impromptu races between the ‘104 and the lightning during squadron exchanges. Star had the initial acceleration but lightning soon took over, especially in the vertical. A T5 even beat an F15 to 20k!! awesome!!
Dedicated RF104 also had a camera bay just behind the cockpit
I think hes an arrogant self amusing sod who only has time for things he likes and everything else is crap!
I agree about the non-pc/poncy side of him but does he really have to be so damn smug!???
Hes just like all the other reporters who have to put up with a crap script and add a bit of “personality”
Get someone who knows their stuff and delivers a non-irritating, enthusiastic dialogue, unfortunately I cant think of anyone in the avaition world!Last one for me was Raymond Baxter – my God I sound just like my Dad!! RIP
Not a ‘104, their radomes dont have a pronounced curvature like this one and recce stars had camera gear in the fuselage behind the cockpit and/or a bay under the front fuselage.
Could actually be a Tornado F2/3 but that panel must have been cut out later – ADV radomes are solid.
What a poser this is!!
Certainly are Singapore AF FR74s – gorgous!!
Cant quite tell if they have r/w/r roundels or the ying/yang roundel, introduced in ’73. They now have a stylized lions head as national marking.
With a Britt and type D RAF roundels all round , that would date it to ’72-’74.
Now lets get this line up right!
Obviously Hunters and a taxying Vulcan then r-l a Hercules, Brittannia, VC10 and Nimrod (fin fillet can be seen which Comet didnt have)
Did someone mention a Shackelton? and what on earth are “rear wings”!?
looks very mirage 5 – dunno why it would be at Brooklands tho!
It appears to have a fairly substantial pitot mounting, so not a missile.
