RE: Another meet up ? See some ‘planes and have a chat / pie / pint etc

I mentioned the 15th & 16th, and got the reply “where are you taking me on 14th”, so I guess from that I am in the clear, however March will be equally as good for me.

    RE: Rebuild or Replica??

I’m sure RM689 is very valuable to Rolls Royce, as it is very much part of the history of the company having been operated by them since 1949, whereas RN201 and the XIX don’t have the same historic attachment to the operator. With regard to the loss of life involved in the accident, as tragic as this was the aircraft could serve as a fitting memorial to the pilot. There are a number of Mustang rebuilds out there which have claimed pilots lives in the past, indeed one was based in France for a while and displayed at Leg ends however nobody raised the issue over that so why should the Spit be any different?

As for the Flixton ‘TD248’ the majority of the original skins have been used to recreate a Spitfire fuselage for a museum which at todays prices could not hope to obtain an original airframe and commemorate wartime Spitfire operations in Norfolk, had these skins not been saved and passed on for preservation they would have been destroyed.

An interesting question, however how different would this restoration be to say a rebuilt original Spit which has new spars, frames, longerons, skins etc, but has a Merlin (or Griffon) authentic systems etc. So far these have been regarded as genuine so I can’t see where RM689 differs other than its very public accident some years ago.

    Now thats us told!!!!!

I personally think that is better to have threads such as this at this time of year to keep people interested / involved during the quieter times of year, otherwise from experience on other boards people tend to drift off and end up elswhere at the start of the new season resulting in very little new info being posted.
However I may be in the minority in this view

Ken Lyndon-Dykes, that name rings a bell, was he the guy interviewed following the tragic L39 accident at Duxford in June?

I miss seeing Gary Numan displaying G-OYAK (YAK 11), the two of then really brought the best out in one another, however i am glad to see that his music career has taken off again.

As for aircraft, I may be alone here but I miss seeing the Harvard formation team out on the circuit.

I’m particularly bad at this planning stuff so tend to wake up look out of the window which results in one of two things:

    a) Looks like a good day, rush out of bed, in and out of the shower into the car and off, hoping there is no traffic as i am already late.

    b) It’s raining, roll over and go back to sleep (usually results in waking around 10ish to beautiful sunshine, leading to a foul mood for the rest of the day).

Bearing this in mind I love the Shuttleworth evening displays as I tend to at least be awake for them, and can have a nice pub lunch on the way up and home in time for a couple of beers.

The Sabre that the Fighter Collection had registered to them is now registered to Flying Heritage Collection / Vulcan Warbirds in America, and has been with them for some time now.

Now theres a thought, Brooklands, proper cars and aircraft combined. However if we do it in the summer I can terrify the wildlife and myself when I awaken the thing thats sleeping in my garage on a trip to the banked track.

Sounds like a good idea to me, not been to Hendon for ages. At the moment I can’t see any reason why I can’t make it.

Raider, I heard the same, don’t think that one ever came to anything. The American story has come to me now through a couple of unconnected sources.
