RE: Display Routines-Fast and Low or Lots of Aeros?

One of the best displays of 2002 I saw was Janie at Tibenham (I missed Leg ends), as you say a lovely tight flat display without the need to scream up into the clouds out of sight at anytime, with the added bonus of that fantastic Mustang howl from the gunports as the ‘g’ comes on.

RE: Display Routines-Fast and Low or Lots of Aeros?

    Am interesting debate here.

My personal view currently is that the aircraft should be flown as enthusiatically and as safely as possible. Over the years I along with others on this board have lost far too many good friends in Warbird accidents and I have no desire to loose anymore.
It is however possible to put on an exciting display without screaming up to 3000 feet turning it upside down and hammering back down towards the ground with the aim of being 50 feet above it as you level out. I am more in favour of flattish displays which are fairly tight and fast enough for the aircraft to maintain momentum throughout the display and enough height to avoid the floor and stay legal.
I guess my tastes have changed over the years as I used to enjoy aeros with warbirds but I think watching an operator I was working for at the time hanging almost motionless without enough speed at the top of a loop kind of changed my mind (and his I believe), luckily he got away with it.

RE: What’s the gem for Flying Legends then?

OK with my sensible head on!!

I would love to see the Tempest currently under restoration in the UK attend Legends. Haven’t formed an opinion either way about the replica 190’s and 262’s, although I would like to see one in the flesh.
In addition I am still waiting patiently for the OFMC and TFC Yak 3’s fly, and my fingers are firmly crossed that Ray Hanna’s Lavochkin La9 make it for Legends (even if it returns to New Zealand for the Wanaka show next year.
I would also like to see some Harvards display, as well as predictably for me Yak 11’s, both of which provide a vital service these days to train the Warbird pilot of tomorrow, not to mention the sterling work it has done over the years.
I do like to see the line up of Warbirds of all types as it illustrates how far the Warbird movement in the UK has come in recent years, and makes an impressive sight particularly with variations in colour schemes in recent years reflecting the variety of operators and uses over the years.
Finally I would like to jump to the defence of the Skyraider, anybody who witnessed the way in which the late Hoof Proudfoot displayed that huge machine at the North Weald Fighter Meet some years ago would realise just how impressive they can be (almost as good as Gary Numan in the Yak 11).
I wish everybody a safe, sunny and enjoyable season.

Now here’s a real wish list:

The Flying A Services fleet, actually I think a squadron of Typhoons may be more realistic, but you never know.

Who knows, it may even happen one day

They certainly did some work to it before it came over the first time, but I believe the first rebuild was done elsewhere in the early 80’s. Bit of a shame they forgot to rebuild the structure when they did it. Must be one hell of an expensive Mustang by now.

Now Tom you don’t really mean that do you, the P51D is a magnificent machine (nearly as graceful as a Yak 11).

Personally I’m not a big fan of the Spitfire, mainly due to access doors being put wherever they would fit and often too small to gain any access, rather than by the component it was meant to give access to.

I’ll put up with anything that cares to come along (it’s a hard life having to watch shed loads of warbirds).

    RE: Airshow Irritations!

Having had occasion to be on the other side of the fence at shows I’d like to make a few comments.

    >Using junk as chocks. Leaving the covers on.

It’s not always possible to get the covers off an aircraft before the gates open, particularly if you happen to be looking after more than one aircraft, at times the owner may ask for the covers to be left on if the weather looks iffy. At times items need to be left by aircraft so as to get them started, particularly the Yak 11 which will require a large air bottle with a regulator and hoses, unless the pilot feels brave and wants to rely on internal air, bearing in mind on a stock Yak 11 the air is also needed for the brakes you can see why this is necessary.
Cleaning material also may be required for those machines that throw their fluids around at random so as they can be cleaned up for photographs, and the show.
In addition tool boxes may be required if something needs attending to.

    >Getting into a rearly good position only to have a Rental
    >van or fuel bowser park in front.

    No fuel = No fly
Not sure about rental vans, only that they may contain the tools needed to get the machine in the air which the crew need to unload.

    >Having large aircraft parked close to the barrier and small
    >ones far away.

On many airfield there is often a concrete ramp nearest to the crowdline, and grass further away. Bigger aircraft may very well be heavier thereby needing the concrete, leaving the smaller lighter machines for the grass, believe me it’s no fun trying to dig an aeroplane out of the mud.

    >Formations that take forever to formate and then only make
    >one pass, usually at high speed.

Not a pilot so can’t comment, but there must be a reason

    >Not taxying the full length of the airfield so everyone can
    >get a shot.

Occasionally done as aircraft are designed to be flown and not driven about on the ground, Spits and the like can overheat without the correct airflow passing over them. In addition there are at times more aircraft than pilots so it may be necessary for the pilot to get back ASAP so there is not a gap in the programme.

    >Having unusual aircraft (like the Ju52 and me108) parked in
    >places so you can’t get a good shot.

I can guess the show this happened at!!!!

As for dolly birds being shown over aircraft I can’t object to that, but I guess I’ve not been to the right shows for that.

One comment I will make is that on occasion I have been verbally abused by individuals at airshows when either discussing an issue with a pilot, or attending to an issue which would otherwise keep the aircraft grounded for the show.

I like the idea of the ‘Forum Roadshow’ idea Tony, be nice to meet up with people at times at shows in the summer and it will save me talking to myself.

    RE: The Next Forum Get-together

Both options sound good to me, perhaps for a northern option we could co-ordinate it on a weekend when Breighton have a fly in, and then possibly Yorkshire Air Museum on the other day, just a thought.
I’m sure I could be convinced to sample the local ales in the evening as well.

In the meantime I will put some thought to other possible venues.
