I heard on the Wall St Journal podcast today that 20% of the Syrian air force was destroyed. These were high profile mainstream political commentators who were saying this. They also played a recording of McMaster saying this.
So this was more of a internal propaganda ploy than I originally thought. It works great for the casual citizen. For anyone with a remote interest in the conflict, not so much. But it wasn’t for us.
Gased babies chocking to death is not “increadibly stupid” enough for you?! C’mon Sintra watch what you’re writting.
The only thing incredibly stupid here is the idea that this is some humanitarian mission. The US is supporting the starvation of Yemen right now. I’ll let you Google that one. Its a hell of a lot worse than this.
BTW the UN has not even taken a side on what happened.
Trump Considering Sanctions Against Russia, Iran for Supporting Syriahttps://sputniknews.com/world/201704091052467243-us-syria-trump-haley/
This has nothing to do with humanitarianism as I hope people here know. Someone has just convinced Trump that Obama made Russia too strong and anything to weaken Russia must be done to repair the damage. When in reality, Obama had nothing to do with it. And if it wasn’t for Obama’s restraint, the US could already be disgraced and bogged down and losing big in another war.
Plus I think China wants the US to put boots on the ground. That would tie the US military and associated think tanks down
Latest rumor. Mcmaster wants to send in 150,000 troops by June
No offense scar, politics and the earlier argument we had aside, as I know you are a rational poster from your history. Isn’t it just a bit more plausible that Assad did launch this Sarin attack than what is being reported in Russian news? I’m not saying there is 100% evidence, but it it pretty clear that the preponderance of evidence is in favor.
Again, I’m sick of the blame game. U.S. killed civilians here, Russia there, Assad v. jihadi’s or rebels (whatever your view). In all due respect, there is a level of decency that both sides of this conflict can find common ground and say that one or another’s reports are inaccurate and the actions of a proxy are incongruent with human decency.
Old containers in Al-Shuayrat airbase are exempted and destroyed years ago by OPCW inspectors who drilled holes in them.

Strange act for sure, these strikes on Syria. Is Trump trying to say, that he is bad, mad, and dangerous to know? Was he waiting for this moment? From a cynical perspective, that’s a sneaky move. He showed that he can be tough and resolute. He found a weak enemy, and did some surgical strikes. He showed that he can be tough on Russia. He silences his stupid critics and stupid liberals, who’ll be more careful in the future in egging him on. Putin would probably let it slide, as it does not really threaten Russia.
More complicated things lie in the future. If Assad stays, then everyone can be happy, except the victims of these strikes. But if Assad goes, Russia will be seriously challenged. It stands a lot to lose in the region, and I am not sure, it would be willing to absorb the blow.
I still don’t know how to take Trump. Is he diabolically smart, or just an idiot in the hands of neocons. All in all, I am deeply disappointed that he took this route, but I am trying to see some rationale behind it. Even if he gets somewhere (which I doubt) — that’s not the way to get anywhere.
Wow. So many USA folks are trying to have their cake and eat it too. Look what you said :
He showed that he can be tough on Russia.
Then does not really threaten Russia
It didn’t even threaten the asphalt of the runway.
Even the military community in the US is very split on this dumb move.
Unless you count old concrete as a weapon system or enemy, last night’s strikes did no real damage to Assad’s war fighting capability. The strike did not even take out the base’s runway or taxiways temporarily, meaning more missions can be flown from Shayrat in the near term. Even the base’s air defenses were left intact.
That is absolutely right. USA did not have any legal to intervene in Syria. Like Russia in Ukraine?
Russia did not attack Ukraine with cruise missiles or anything for that matter. Not a single jet even violated air space. And unlike this attack, nobody died. So I am not sure what you are talking about.
You missed the entire point. The point clearly is, that even if Assad did it, nothing is going to change on the ground. Tillerson even said that their policy (Assad can stay) hasn’t even changed.
Very interesting this article described by Bellum.
“ the administration had a “very high level of confidence” that the massacre in Khan Sheikhoun was carried out by Assad’s forces using sarin, which is banned as a weapon of mass destruction under international law .”
Rex Tillerson, the US Secretary of State

.
This doesn’t even matter ! It does not even matter if Assad did it. If Assad did it, does not absolve Trump from breaking international law, constitutional law and all the political norms therein.
And not only does it not matter poltically, if Assad did it or not. It doesn’t change anything strategically on the ground. Trump cannot send in ground forces to take out Assad ! That would mean, that Trump would have to read the same ultimatum to Vladimir Putin, that George Bush read to Saddam Hussain.
So no more smoking gun posts. Or aha posts. Because it doesn’t matter. In other news…
Syrian Warplanes From US-Hit Air Base Said To Resume Air Strikes-ZeroHedge
SOHR: military sources witnessed two warplanes taking off from Shayrat airbase less than 24 hours after it got hit w/ dozens of US Tomahawks
Remind me again who it was that pushed the US into going into Libya?
The little American. Nick Sarkozy
Really, have you seen the damage. Are you at the airfield in question at this moment.
I have seen the damage. ToMohawks aren’t what they used to be apparently.
You don’t need great big craters everywhere, just a little hole and job done, the blast alone will probably render whatever is in the HAS ineffective, plus you want to localise collateral damage to the civil population. Not a lot of activity going on which says a lot.

Helicopters return to the base.

LOL! Where did I say that 59 hit the target? Why are you taking at face value that only 23 hit the target? Would you also believe a claim that only 15 hit the target if the Russia Ministry of Defence announced it? Think about it? Put yourself in the shoes of a spokesman in the Russian Ministry of Defence. At all costs the strike has to be played down and they throw out a figure that is essentially click bait. The result is that the story goes viral and conspiracy people fill in the blanks. Based on that 23 claim alone that blank has already been filled in by armchair warriors claiming that Russians shot down the rest.
The same goes for the Russian UAV footage that focuses on the intact aircraft next to the runway. Of course the Russians know that those are old retired types/decoys and that the US planners have left them alone. Old MiG-15 or 17 plus Su-7 and or Su-17s that have been there for years. By doing so they know that the footage will go viral and ignorance will take over with the armchair warriors claiming “missed aircraft”. Can you see how the propaganda works?
o]
Judging by the damage, I’d say 23 hits is way too high of an estimation.
One relatively small base. Evacuated, since missiles were flying from west. I bet you tjis is it and this is all.
No more of a big deal than last couple of bombing raids by Israel.
Seems like Syrian airspace is open fir anyone who can fly in.
Trump did this for his name and face as his big mouth got him cornered this time. He had to fire some missiles in order to survive.Question is what he agreed with Putin as far as this goes.
The Saudis gave Trump an ultimatum. He took it. Seems like it was just for show.
This has stunned the world though and I think Trump will lose his base support and have single digit approval ratings.
Holy cow. Take a look at who called it about 5 posts up.
How did he prevent Syria jets hiding in Latakia? He attacked instantly and without warning.
I read this better than others clearly. I think a number of you guys are about to be busy 24×7 for a while? Putin is going to be very unhappy. This is the biggest slap in the face he’s ever received.
Trump works fast.
I called it on the page before this. So there’s that.
If you believe for a second that Trump was elected to “deescalate with Russia and Syria”, you have a massive perception problem.
YES, vote should be banned! Its so obviously useless… Just look, Democracies have such an awfull historic record on acountability and taking care of their population by comparison with… everyone else… dont they?
Life its, oh so much better in any casual dictatorship, or a single party popular republic, or a good old fashioned theocracy… Who wants to vote and get a country like, dont know, Canada (only frozen Bears and Mooses), New Zealand (Mordor and Orcs and worse, Sir Peter Jackson), Denmark (awfull Cheese) and so on…
STRONQ North Korea forever!
I SAID that this is what he PROMISED THE ELECTORATE. Did I say that he would ? NO
