Yes but in some instances, religion is the Catalyst, which aggravates the situation. Have there been any Buddhist wars? probably not because they take a more logical view of life.
Political Ideoligy is the other Catalyst for War, as you mentioned.
But my argument is about Britain 2006, I heard it mentioned on the Radio that we now have the reputation of being the terrorist capital of Europe. I would like too thank our Masters for putting us here,I could not have done a better job myself.
What a country too bring your kids up in, carry on Britain your’e heading for disaster.

This is the point I was trying to make….. Religion can be the Catalyst as I feel that the vast majority of organised religions have a political agenda. The more people who are a member of their religion in the world the more powerful their religious movement becomes. Just look at the overpopulation caused in places like Africa due to the rife influence of the catholic church and despite the aids problem the pope says “no condoms”. That could be a subject of another thread so rapidly avoiding tangents………

What about the political clout of the mullahs too. I feel that once you inject religion into the equation you have made a minor problem a major one.

Would agree with GA on the point about London being the terrorist capital of europe and the press…….

    5. Heinkel He 111P c/n 1526 built in 1938. As 5J+CN in KG 4 flying from Oslo/Fornebu it was attacked and damaged by Blackburn Skuas operating from HMS Ark Royal. It foirce landed near Digervarden, south of Lesjaskog. The surviving 3 crew members were captured and spent the rest of the war as PoWs in Canada. The remains were recovered in 1976 and restored to almost original condition, as seen here.

I thought that this was going to be a flyer. I remember an article a few years ago when the original crew went to see the restoration and there was also one of the Skua pilots there. Was there any plans at all to put this back in the air?

How has Britain arrived at the present situation regarding Terrorism these last few years. Is this all a fairly recent phenomenon , or has it been a foregone conclusion. In my opinion this has been developing in Britain for a long time, going back to the 80’s. I can remember seeing stickers on Street Lamps advertising extremism even back then. So it seems today’s events have been in the making for a long time. If my Father were alive today he would be horrified at the way Britain has gone , gradually spiralling into an uncertain future. Sadly we could have stopped this years ago, however in my opinion it’s too late now.
We are now going into a free fall which will lead too conflict, if wer’e not careful.
I guess it’s now in fashion too be one, if you don’t like what you see. I just wish these people would get a life, and do something usefull for society, instead of trying too destroy it. they don’t seem too have much going on up
    there.
It’s all very childish….and a complete waste of energy …..

Remember this , life is what you make it , you only have yourself too blame if thing’s go wrong…

You won’t get anywhere in this World if you don’t improve yourself.
This world is not for losers…..

The world would be a much happier place if people lived together without conflict,( stating the obvious) but the obvious is not good enough is it.

    People like killing each other….

    Wake up Britain!!!!

We have religious fundamentalism rife in every belief system in the world today and I feel that the root of the problem lies in this fundamentalism. Unless we can curb this fundamentalism then I feel you’re right there will be conflict and on a massive scale. I hope it doesn’t but it looks like it’s on the cards and as you have said here we are in free fall. Can it be stopped? Don’t really know but I think that the thoughts and ideas of a girl from a village in Yorkshire will change it but if everyone started with a desire to change it we may have a chance.

I think they did not cover the wings and fuselage with metal, because the structure is rather flexible, and moves! That could make metal skinning a problem.
This is more a guess then an engineering comment.

    Chris

There is a good photo of one underwater. The intersting part is that ALL the skin seems to have gone. I have been on a lot of sea wrecks and you will always find at least some of the skin.

Once you start summarily executing people (eg, Brazilian electricians) where do you stop?

How many do you need to summarily execute before you start to become the very thing you claim to be fighting? 10? 100? 1000?

    How many?

There’s a crucial difference between justice and vengeance, and we must use the due process of law because those who would do us harm certainly would not use it and we are opposing them because we believe that our ways are better than theirs.

I see no moral difference whatsoever between those who feel entitled to kill others because they are Moslems and those who feel entitled to kill others because they are not Moslems.

I couldn’t agree more. A man going about his lawful business is pinned down by a police officer and then held while another officer takes away his life. It was a very deliberate act by a police officer under orders. He wouldn’t have behaved in such a matter unless he was under orders. He was under orders to kill that poor man. There is no other explanation for it and it really makes me want to throw up when I find out that the people who deprived that man of his life are being investigated and prosecuted under Health and Safety Issues. I know the family of a young Brazillian man who are wondering about the Health and Safety of their son.

    The middle east????????

A veritable minefield. When do they start trying to co-exist?

How long is a piece of string?

Good work. If found guilty, there’s plenty of room in Gitmo for these losers. Hanging at the Tower of London, or worse would be prefered though.

Everyone whinning about scooping them up on intent are the same that would be crying fowl blaming the same security pukes if there were half a dozen or more airliners downed with thousands dead. The alleged evil doers were not planning to rob a bank, rough up patrons at a soccer match, etc. The plan involved mass casaulties. Better safe than sorry. Of course, we shall see at the trial. Be a pretty huge screwup to get this much wrong with this many pro security people involved.

I’m all for the security services working of this kind of thing and I have always been a big fan of out police but with the screwups recently it can’t help but leave you with a question mark…. Have they got it right this time? The Shooting at Stockwell and the other raid where the guy was shot also makes me wonder if the police are getting a bit trigger happy. I would have thought though after the recent screwups they would be extra careful this time. Only time will tell really but as you say….. If they have caught them lock them up and throw away the key…. If the story about the airlines proves to be true then there are lots of instruments in our museums that can be tested for functionality on them too.

PS: Not anti American but anti American policy overseas.

IIRC the US law at the time said more or less that you were not allowed to use your US passport to travel abroad in order to join the armed forces of a country being at war. So if you did not join the armed forces you would be OK, I think.
The “US passport” phrase was to exclude people with double citizenship, who were able to use their other passport (American Poles did that, for example).
Your question is probably wider than just about those who trained military pilots in Canada. A lot of US aircraft (and other war equipment) being sold to Britain at the time, what would be the legal situation of all those company engineers etc. who came over to assist in assembly and operation?

What about Leonard B. β€œTuck” Smith, a Navy lieutenant on loan to Great Britain who got the US DFC for is part in the hunt for the Bismark.

In May 1941, six months before the U.S. entered the war, Smith was on air patrol near Ireland when he spotted the German pocket battleship Bismarck. His radio message to the British enabled them to locate the Bismarck.

President Roosevelt decided to lend a number of Catalinas to the British through lend-lease, then-Lt. j.g. Smith was sent to Britain to train Royal Air Force pilots.

Smith accompanied the pilots on routine patrols which explains why he was there in the first place.

26th of May 1941, Smith was in a Catalina along with a Royal Air Force pilot and crew. They were flying at an altitude of about 500 feet when Smith first saw the Prinz Eugen and as they got closer the Bismarck fired on them.

Smith got the Distinguished Flying Cross for this and since the U.S. was officially neutral, it was a risky decision to recognize Smith for his participation in a combat operation. Yet, a citation signed by Navy Secretary Frank Knox lauded Smith’s β€œheroism and extraordinary achievement as a volunteer observer … during an aerial search for the German pocket-battleship Bismarck.”

    What happened to neutrality then?

It appears you too have the amazing talent of being the kiss of death to threads. I could post in a thread that has the potential to go for pages and pages, and no-one will post afterwards.

Killer of threads up to one sentence away- thats me!!
