Is this the Halifax that crashed near Howden train station, running out of fuel just short of Breighton. If so there is some information in the local pub (The Barnes Wallis). I could get you this information if you wish, or you could contact Elvington as this is where the info comes from.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

How interesting, why don’t you start a new thread on this?

    It was a joke.

I found the Tigger Movie quite distressing. In the movie he is regularly seen bouncing around singing “wonderful thing about Tiggers, Is Tiggers are wonderful things, Their tops are made out of rubber, Their bottoms are made out of springs, They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers Is I’m the only one”. This only goes to prove that the other occupants of thousand acre wood have hidden from Tigger that Tiggers are in the wild (rare I might add) and there is also a Tigger preservation effort at Port Lym zoo. This is an awful reflection on the other occupants that just seek to deny Tigger his cultural heritage and not allow him to mix with other Tiggers. I found that by showing this kind of movie to children is another attempt by the US to indoctrinate the youth of today to dismantle or undermine the multi culturism of this country. Quite scares me.

Apart from 34 MU, whose records are disappointingly sparse, the others are:

56 Inverness (Lots of detailed stories)
    63 Carluke, Lanarkshire (Ditto)
    60 Leconfield
    67 Taunton
    75 Wilmslow
    78 Bynea, S Wales
    83 Woolsington
    226 Mullusk, N Ireland

There was one in Kent (Faygate) but I can’t find the number.

The ORBs of the last five listed are not very detailed, but there are a few full stories included as examples of the units’ work.

Would 56 MU have covered all of Scotland?

So has this been confirmed? Is Jackson really taking this project on? L:ast I heard from a magazine editor friend of his in NZ Jackson owns like half the WWI planes in NZ and wants to do a WWI flying epic…so to hear that he’s taking on a WWII flick is a surprise…but after seeing King Kong and what a spectacular job he did there I think he’ll do the movie some justice! But someone please confirm for me that he IS doing this??

    M

It’s true or so they say. But this time it will be done EXACTLY how it was really done and it will be Tom Cruise playing “Chuck” Gibson an Eagle Squadron driver brought in for the mission.

We also fitted the Sunderland with a full complement of Brownings! I have not read all of this thread so this may have been covered but there are 3 or 4 Sunderland wrecks in the waters off Oban between 50-180 metres down. Some of them very diveable. But locals are precious so seek permission.

There were three that were scuttled in Lough Erne too.

Just thinking for a minute. What would happen if in a few thousand years and the human race is extinct. Alien archaeologists and anthropologists find a DVD collection and play them. Suddenly we find that they call the planet Hollywood and it’s ruled by a race of warrior kings called Cruise, Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Snipes. These warrior kings, like the Arthur of old, look towards their sages called George and Tony who were bastions of peace and lawfulness and had a mighty power called spin (A minor Queen called Wonder Woman had a similar power). Taking their wisdom and power; kings Cruise, Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Snipes would be made imortal in order for them to put the worlds problems to right. They would travel the globe with a powerful weapon called friendly which would fire on all wrong doers and even members of their own side, who were not pure, were not safe. They were a mighty race the aliens would think as they read storys or their deeds. They vanquished the enemies or their race and the aliens could be left with only one conclusion. These mighty sages must be part of a different species as the people George and Tony counselled constantly said they were talking bull**it. The aliens would be pleased that they had found a culture so mighty but the quest for the truth was on and cracking the bull**it code. Bull**it was the source of their great wisdom but the search may take several lifetimes as they were left with scant clues but many questions. Where did the bull**it come from? Did this mighty power called spin have anything to do with the bull**it or was it one and the same? If you apply spin to the bull**it would it be spread around to all and what was this mighty communcations system called the fan as the mighty kings who served the sages constantly referred to the bull**it hitting it.

Yeah, Let’s have the Yank’s bombing the Dams…. In broad daylight….. with Horten 229’s defending….. and using ‘Gibsons’ 21st century ‘P.C.’ dog/codename…. SNOWBALL.

Be nice to have some realism for a change – after all; they saved Burma, invented the moving tailplane AND found/retreived the Enigma machine, among others. 😎

I loved the recovery of the Enigma machine. I did notice that with all the firing of automatic weapons inside the pressure hull of a submarine they were using the new ammo designed by that Irish American guy Rick O’Shea. 😉

    Keep it civil!!!
We can do it you know 😉

    Cees

We could get the Halifax rebuilt by Redbull.

Not sure if the paint job would be authentic though.

    Civil enough?

So a Spitfire is worth a lot of money. So it doesn’t matter if it has a historical value for a country other than the UK. SO if you wave your wallet and shove some bits of scrap aircraft into the general direction of the poor museum involved then there is no other way but to get it out, rip it to bits, replace what’s necessary (destroying some orginality here and there) and get if flying. So, if I give enough money to the long suffering RAF Museum to take Halifax W1048 off their hands so that it can finally be restored in Holland (not exactly where it would belong, but who cares) that would be a win win situation irrespective of the few UK Halifax afficionados would be crying at the gate near Harwich when the lowloaders depart for the Hook?

The result? Museums with wrecked airframes of dubious provenance, but with lots of cash (just a guess) and several squadrons of Spitfire IX’s at airshows where bored people stay away from en masse.

    I like it!!

Seriously, this is a good discussion. Let’s take it further (without teddies or hadbags) to see what good this will do to preservation.

So, do we need squadrons of Mk IX Spitfires in the air, or is diversity a better option. And what rights do National Museums have. Should they be protected or crucified for selling valuable airframes?
    Cheers

How about flogging off all the Mk IXs and rebuild the Halifax back in the air and keep it here. That would work.

If it’s going to be remade in Hollywood we all know it’s going to be total rubbish.

    Peter,

You mean EF311? Still down there probably being slowly being grinded to bits by the tide. In the two Aeroplane Monthly magazines a sketch was published showing the fuselage and wings substantially intact although the top of the fuselage was gone and the upper wingsections not in good condition either.

Will probably stay there forever because of the location (busy shipping), salt water and lack of funds. Pity really. Even the bits could be used as patterns for a restoration. Technically this is the only survivor (apart from the Russian one).

Is that article on the web somewhere?
