They tested the grease-powered car on Mythbusters. I believe it got a little less mileage than using gas, but it worked fine. All you’d have to do is find enough grease and strain it (they used grease taken from deep fryers at a fast-food joint) and you’re in business. Might not really be practical, but the fact that somebody made a car run on something other than gas or electricity was great.
Here’s an idea for hydroelectric power. You need two “oil rigs”. We’ll call them that because that’s the closest thing I can think of to what you’d need. The first is on your coastline. It’s the “receiver”. The second is out in the ocean over the top of a strong underwater current. Place the hydroelectric generators subsurface inside the underwater current. They generate power which is sent up to the rig overhead. It converts this to electricity, charging a massive power cell which is on a ship the size of a supertanker. The floating battery charges, then moves to the coastal platform to unload it’s charged cell, which is taken to a distribution station to give off the electricity to needy users. Put an empty “battery” on the boat, and send it back out to the plant for charging. The only question is, does an underwater current exist that’d be strong enough to make this work on a useable level?
I saw a sci-fi program where they had satellites in orbit with massive photo voltaic cells which collected the sunlight and “fired” it at collectors on the ground. Was wondering if one of you rocket scientists out there can tell me if this is practical.

there is a company in the US that’ll convert pickups to run on GREASE , i beleive they just ask users to buy bulk grease from resturants .
On this topic how do you guys feel about ethanol?????
Will the pickup have a perspex bonnet? Will it be painted funky colours? Will I have to wear a leather jacket and brilcream my hair?
Ooops…….
Sorry….. Wrong Grease. 😀 😀 😀

Now thats interesting Hurrifan, so its big business versus progress. That certainly makes sense , so its status quo and nowhere too go. Would I be correct in saying that Russia has huge reserves of Oil underground, I have heard this mentioned in the past. I also understand that a modified Diesel Engine will work on used cooking Oil.
Cooking oil has to be treated. I went to the Center for Alternative Technology in Wales and there was a talk about the bio diesel and how to make it. I’m not a chemist so most of it went over my head but one thing that they did say was Grasping Gordon slapped a tax on it. If you make it and use it as fuel you have to pay tax. Slipped that little goodie in under something else I believe.

Until our leaders realise, that putting money into technological progress, is more important than raking in Taxes off of Fuel , we won’t progress. 🙂

Grasping Gordon wouldn’t like that. Spend money? Why spend money when I can grab it from the likes of you an me. 😀

Wind is one of the least suitable ways to generate power at industrial level (ie. to feed the grid), it’s expensive, unreliable and you still need a base load generation capability anyway. Most of the power industry wants new generation nuclear stations.
I wish that the government saw it that way. With all the wind farms going up it’s like a rash spread across the countryside. I’m sure they have set up a “working party” or a “think tank” but we all know how effective they are  dont we.

Some of the technology has been there for ages but its not in the interest of various industries to allow them to develop. Many years ago car engines were modified to accept bio fuels such as methane….but the oil companies wouldnt make much from that would they??? 😡
All down to profit and greed again. I’m all for finding an alternative to fossil fuels and all for lessening the effect on the environment but what is the best way has always been in my mind. The greenies are at best uninformed and the government are pro profit so how do we (at street level) find out.

Aviation archaeology doesn’t just encompass digging for bits of aircraft, don’t forget the proposed surveys and digs around various former RAF BoB bases, which will, no doubt, be conducted along the same lines as the so called “classical” archaeological digs.
And, as to upsetting the academics, why should they be spared just because they’ve got a piece of embossed paper and letters after their names? In fact lets run up behind them and pull their leather “elbowed” patched cardigans over their heads, and call them names like specky four eyes. Ugh maybe not. 😀
There is also that line about human remains isn’t there. Under the law aircraft are protected under the protection of military remains act yet you often see “classical” archaeologists digging up burial grounds. Where is that line I have often asked myself. They recently dug up the mass graves from the aftermath of the War of the Roses now when will that policy extend to WWII and the Protection of Military Remains Act be either put aside or just plainly ignored? What would have happened if the Mk IX, in the program, turned out not to be the one that they thought it was and there was a pilot in it? If parts of the program ended up on the cutting room floor what would have happened in the event of finding remains just to make a program?

No, Sean.
That’s rugby with armour, dumbed down a bit……. :diablo:
Rugby is also a thinking game.

The pilot wasn,t lynched. His chute caught on a lamp post and the unfortunate pilot was beaten and knifed to death by angry East Enders as they had been given a rather rough time by the bombers the days previous.Or is it another pilot I,m thinking off as the one I read about was from a He111.It all happened too fast before the constabilarary got there.I have seen the film footage before and it is quite scarey to watch. The forces having ripped off the outer wings before the remains falling to crash quite heavily onto a train station.I think????
Yes Holmes was pretty desperate, and lucky too..Not the only time I have heard a pilot resort to those tactics.
I thank both Andy and Dilip for their candor in this matter of Bader.I have enjoyed this thread for it,s honesty and heart and learnt more about things that go on behind the scenes.I believe in a hundred years there still will be people chasing after plane wrecks.Instead of WW2 aircraft they might be after Vietnam era AC or Gulf War.The difference between Aircraft Archeolagy and traditional Archeolagy is that one digs up remains to find out about history where the other digs up history to find remains. They both can learn from each other…..Oh when I met Mark12 when he was over here I felt like tying him too a chair and torturing him with a feather to get all of his Spitfire knowledge out of him… :p Saves on buying manuals… 😀
It crashed into Victoria Station and was the subject of a documentary by Mentorn TV.
They dug up Buckingham Gate to get to the remains of the Hurricane. I watched it and Holmes was hung up in his parachute but got helped down and off to the pub. The bits that they dug up were not, in my opinion, worth looking for as it was compltely smashed up and shutting down half of that part of London a waste of time.
