Anyone interested in a preview of the excavations carried for ‘Who Downed Douglas Bader’ can see a selection of photos at:

    by following the link.

    Mind your blood pressure chaps!

What a load of old bo****ks. So Douglas Bader calmly put his helmet back into the cockpit as he was bailing out did he? That paintworks looks in quite good nick. DB must have put it into a plastic bag before he baled too. 😡

Goods news! I believe TIGHAR, the organization mentioned here are very active in pursuing a solution to the Amelia Earhart mystery. 😉

    That old chesnut… 😉

Everyone knows that she was abducted by aliens.

one sometimes must wonder… ‘who writes this cr@p?’ wouldn’t Germany have had to actually launch an invasion fleet in order to be defeated by the RN?
Was it not Herman’s precious Luftwaffe that was sent out to ‘crush’ the RAF in order to clear the way for the invasion? That was the Battle of Britain – the RAF (and others) vs the Luftwaffe… not some pipe dream scrawled by some reject from ‘Revisionists R Us’

I agree. I believe that operation sealion was the invasion plans but to implement it they would have needed air superiority. Without the air superiority, which the RAF achieved, operation sealion couldn’t be implemented. I think they are mixing together sealion and BoB. I don’t think you have to read too much to find out that the BoB was fought in the air.

It’s considerably more than a rumour, but well documented fact. One incident I recall was Kenneth More speaking after dinner at an RAF mess after Reach For The Sky came out – he told the OC that he had a few Bader stories and was specifically told “not to mention that B******’s name in this mess”. He was a god to many, but a devil to others and that is often the way of people of his ken.

I think personally Bader was a hero, but a flawed one.

I suppose it’s like all men of that ilk who are in that position (in a war and fighting it). I understand Guy Gibson was a pain in the butt too.

I have never really taken a good look at Bader or, in fact, many of the men who fought. I have only really looked at the pilots of aircraft that I have been looking at or looking for underwater so my knowledge of the individuals is limited. Can you recommend any books about Bader?

I did hear that the Germans took his legs away and the erk who carried him around wasn’t even acknowledged by Bader at all at the end of the war. Not sure it’s true at all that one but a book on Bader would give me some insight. I believe that Bader was a hero but like a lot of heros there is the arrogance that comes with it. Not the kind of “look at me” arrogance but the arrogance that people feel when they meet someone who has no fear.

I knew a 7th dan black belt in Karate a while ago and got to know him well. I introduced him to a friend of mine who commented “what an arrogant ba***rd” but he was a realy kind and sweet man. One thing that always was there was he oozed confidence in his abilities that can be interpreted as arrogance by someone with lesser abilities. Maybe this was the arrogance in Bader that others saw.

i agree it’s terrible when any of the crew members die but to die form a malfunctioning parachute that has to be the worst

I skydive and have often wondered about the malfunction. I have had a malfunction on my main but I had a reserve. A friend of mine was killed in the US and I couldn’t help thinking about what was going through his mind as he fell. What a horrible thought really.

Sir Alan Smith spoke about Bader with a reverence that I have never seen before. Spoke about him as though he was a god. I did hear a rumour that Bader was hated by the men who flew with him but never heard anything apart from that rumour and I think my chat with Alan Smith proves otherwise.
