Wonderful to see, a dying breed now – saw a VC10 tanker climbing out of R32, LBA today about 13:15 🙂 Lovely noisey Conways!
    Anyone know the serial ?

    Cheers

Super VC-10..The most beautiful commercial airliner ever designed with unmatched flying characteristics, extremely quiet cabin, 950 km/h at 44.000 feet in 1965!! well ahead of its time..
    Unfortunately a dying breed..

Yeah. As I understand it, Dassault was proposing to transfer all Mirage 2000 production facilities to India, with the right to modify & upgrade at will.

Any idea why India declined the offer?

So the incredible $ 50 million per a/c price for the upgrade is actually not even state of the art? WTH? 😮 And slow paced to boot.

Damn, the Israelii/inhouse option looks good.

    USS>

Consolation Prize to Dassault in advance ??
In case the Typhoon is declared as winner next year ,the French government and Dassault would have very little to complain about because the Indians would say’ Hey guys look ,we paid a fortune for the upgrade of your 25+ years old Mirage’s so what do you want more ?

Indians are good at damage control .Boeing lost the MMRCA and received an order for 10 C-17’s !

    I bet on a journalist/translation mistake

I’m sure this is the case.. I saw a documentary few weeks ago in which the commentator described the EF Typhoon word for word as ‘ the most advance and sophisticated fighter ever created ‘ you see we live in a democracy.

Then I remembered wrong. Yes, it does sound overinflated to say the least. The “too much champagne” explanation would fit best

Thales ahead of Raytheon and Northrop Grumman ?? Wow ,even too much champagne and an overdose of cocaine would not be enough….

Tellis comments are nonsense.. His analysis is simplistic highlighting particular elements of maneuverability while ignoring others, and as a result he is entirely missing the big picture and coming to false conclusions.
The complexity of the ToT is the issue. The US Congress would never allow Boeing or LM a full scale technology transfer especially, in connection with the APG-79…

Best of wishes to Mrs. Merkel, but at this point, having to choose between the two, the most reasonable thing to do, would be to get the Rafale and share weapons with the upgraded Mirages. Typhoon is best at A-A and the PAK FA will cover that role. Oh well, India may surprise me still…

India has acquired lot of French defence systems in the past ,this time they might not want to put everything into one basket and go for the Typhoon.. Remember, IAF pilots were more impressed with Typhoon than any other contender. I hate to make any prediction but my instinct says TYPHOON… Besides, Dassaults Mirage upgrade bill is very difficult to digest . I am sure India will take this into consideration.

Angela Merkel is in India and putting pressure on Indians to buy the Typhoon and Sarkozy does the same. The EADS belongs 30% to FRANCE and 46% of Dassault belongs to EADS which makes RAFALE and TYPHOON brother and sister. India should buy both fighters to keep everyone happy.

People who don’t know what industry and production is, greatly overestimate the “economy of scale” concept. It’s because that’s the only thing they can understand. (Nothing against you personaly Merlin, I’m annoyed by those industrial “merges”, “critical mass”, “economy of scale” and other paper pushers BS as a general thing”.

Ask General Motor how cool are economy of scale :diablo:

And ask the american aviation industry now that they’ve lost all diversity with only LM and Boeing that remain. They just can put out a 787 or a F35.

Diversity is a lot of little problem to deal with but that avoid BIG problem (ask the dinosaurus!)

According to this link, Dassault plant is capable of producing 350 fighters for export within a period of 10 years and we can easily add to this figure 100-120 or so for the French Airforce which means 450+ fighters within a decade which also means roughly 3-4 fighters a month, am I correct so far?
Instead, they are making this year less than one fighter a month with zero export and you are trying to tell me ( if I understood you correctly of course ) that the unit price of a Rafale today would pretty much the same regardless of the output as the concept of scale economy doesn’t apply to Dassault.

GM is in a different business mate ..For your information ,they came out of recession and bounced back with record profits never seen before in US automotive industry for decades ! do you believe they abandoned the concept of ‘Economies of Scale’ ?

What I am trying to say is that the current production rate of less than one fighter a month is not business for Dassault, its a struggle for survival and it has an impact on the price of Rafale simply because the main suppliers would charge different, higher prices for components they deliver.SNECMA for example delivers 2 M88’s a month instead of 8 and THALES and SAGEM electronics and radar’s for one fighter only instead of 3-4.Of course this would have an impact on price.

Rafale is so frigging amazing it hasn’t sold a single export plane yet. Why? Those savages arn’t qualified enough to operate Brilliant French machinery, thats why.

Sure ,but Rafale did make it to the final in Korea and Singapore .Brazil and UAE didn’t even consider the Typhoon..The rumor has it that Rafale has also finished ahead of Typhoon in Switzerland in last yers evaluations but the Swiss have postponed the decision to 2019.. Acoording to the link below, the Indian pilots were more impressed with Typhoon than any other contender …So it’s little complicated…

    batch 3 : 2009-2012 (51 aircrafts, 12.75 aircrafts/year)
    batch 4 : 2013-1017 (60 aircrafts, 12 aircrafts/year)
    batch 5 : 2018-??

    Where is the gap ?

Production rate that low cost French tax payers enourmously..Correction, this year only 10 fighters is planned..Its correct to assume that even without export orders the production is secured until 2018 but Dassaults original production programm and manufacturing cost calculations were certainly not optimized for one fighter a month for such a long period of time.

One should not wonder why RAFALE is sooo expensive…

It’s still small and it doesn’t mean that the Rafale would be the first to start active tracking.

The problem is that Rafale gets its first Meteor in 2018 and SU-30’s BVR missiles outperforms the MICA by a long distance..Besides ,Flankers Phazotron Zhuk AESA is not that bad I read somewhere ..

In fact , any person with a working brain understood that the UAE want a better radar than the AN/APG-80 , at least regarding range . At the moment , the RBE2-AA is on the par . That means that the real range of the -80 is around 150-170km against a 5 square meter RCS target .

    Cheers .

Lot of misinformations.. If this is the case, the UAE would have gone directly to SH BlockII + since APG-79 is leaps and bounds more capable than RBE2-AA not to mention JHMCS and AIM-9X…

$300 million each? Dearer than a F-22?…Okay you’ve just confirmed your “credibility” to be laughable. Where did you get your sources from, Lewis Page and his sad excuse he reports on called The Register…?

I think this is the price that French tax payers will be paying for the Rafale throughout the year 2011 as DASSAULT is producing only 10 fighters this year ,less than one fighter a mounth ..This output is a record low in the history of the company since 1960’s .
