Brazilian] Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said today (Feb. 22) that President [Dilma] Rousseff will decide on the acquisition of fighter jets for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) “at the time she considers opportune.”
We will have clear picture after OBAMA’s Brazil visit next month..
Are you seriously suggesting that the APG-79 has better performance than the APG-82 despite having significanly less modules?[/QUOTE]
No , the APG-79 is more advance than the Thales AESA…
Of course you think that Thales stuff is the best, what a surprise:rolleyes:
The truth is that no one can tell you until the necessary details are known. While it may not be likely it certainly depends on aspect angle and payload of the Rafale and the true range performance of these aircraft’s respective range performance and there can be no doubt that the Irbis or AN/APG-63(V3) or -82(V1) are significantly more powerful!
The RBE2 would manage even worse against the SH’s APG-79.
Upgrade of Mirage-2000
A hardfought $2.1-billion deal to upgrade the Indian Air Force’s fleet of about 50 Mirage-2000 multirole fighters is final, with a formal agreement expected to be signed in two weeks. Will update this post with details later tonight if I can.

Has India signed the agreement ? the price is exorbitant its tantamount to rape. This attitude of Dassault could cost them the RAFALE in INDIA ..
You believe wrong. Airlines operating 747s and 777s have not seen a drop in PAX numbers since the A380 came online.
Just because you think it’s so, doesn’t make it so.
After Quantas incident it would feel much safer flying a 777-300ER with GE-90 as powerplant !!
That has absolutely zero to do with sales however. If it did, how would you explain the success of 737NG?
The A380 is not the answer to everything you know.
Its a good plane based on a proven technology developed at the right time and it will be successful in the long term. It serves the niche market between 777-300ER and A-380 ..
A-380 is not successful at all, its survival depends on one airline only . If the Emirates hadn’t ordered 92 planes, the whole A-380 project would have gone down the tubes ..
What VC-10’S are still flying ??
Does anyone have any pics of them on the dump at Brize or getting the Axe at St Athan ??
Thankyou from your classic plane man 🙂
The Super VC-10 was probably the most revolutionary and innovative commercial aircraft ever developed.. Its still the best looking and most elegant bird with its huge wings and T-tail. Its structure machined from solid metal was almost undestructable as it was for the first time an airframe had been milled from solid parts instead of riveted, welded and bonded multistructures. It had fantastic flying characteristics. Cruising speed topped 600 miles and altitude + 40.000 feet. The best aircraft for atlantic crossing in 1960’s and even 70’s Pity it sold only 54 units.

What a Beast…
Great fighter. I still think the SH and Typhoon have 50-50 chances of winning in India.
for comparison..
APG 63v2- 1500
APG 77 – 1500
APG 81 – 1200
APG 79 – 1100
Captor aesa- 1000 – 2000
Gripen NG aesa –
elta 2052 – >1500
zhuk ae – 680
Does it mean the F-22’s AESA is the most advance in the world??
Well, not so sure, the problem for SH has always been that US government has no power to provide any guarantees regarding full TOT.
Only US congress can decide that, and history proves that it never did in the past, even for less advanced technologies.
The least to say is that it remains very unlikely for SH.Sweden has the same problem with Gripen, only France doesn’t require its parliament to approve TOT, and Dassault already has the green light from French government to provide 100% TOT.
Unless Dilma says TOT is no longer required, which would be a complete change of strategy, SH is still a no go, and Rafale still favorite.
If Dilma will not settle for anything less than 100% TOT ,The US Congress will never approve this ,especially for APG-79 AESA which is more advance that RAFALE’s first generation AESA which will be operational next near …But they may come to a different kind of arrangement. Boeing needs additional export orders for the SH ( not as desperate as Dassault for RAFALE ) in order to keep the assembly line open and unit costs down. 24 fighters for the RAAF are just a small contribution .
Well, the last president that said that the Rafale was the best plane, while negotiations were still underway. Maybe she got the advice from him…?
LOL..Well said…
Very interesting development.. One thing is for sure it will be more and more difficult for DASSAULT to clinch the deal in Brazil ..Of course , Le Figaro will try to be optimistic its a Dassault newspaper !! but the race is open and I won’t be surprise if RAFALE loses in the end…
Hmmm, I wonder what was the name of that country across the Taiwan Strait that holds nearly 900 billion is US debt and trades hundreds of millions of dollars in trade to the US daily? Hmm… can’t seem to recall…
Semi -Lobster pal I wonder if you ever heard the expression ‘ The barking dogs won’t bite..They just bark !!
This country across the Taiwan straits is heavily dependent on American consumers so they will continue to bark..

I think @toan had the answer:

What a great missile, and what a great post-sale service……..
————————————————————————–I think there is some serious politics in all this

Not only that .The ROCAF has been extremely dissatisfied with the overall performance and reliability of the Mirage. News published in 2009 in Taiwan revealed grave problems like the faults on rotors in engines. France and Taiwan had not solved this turbine blade module trouble yet. French techs who went to Taiwan to study the trouble, recommended shortening the time between overhauls, and Taiwan suspects France is tempting Taiwan to spend more on procuring more spare parts
They now see clearly it was a bad decision to acquire the MIRAGE in 1992.
They need the Block 52+ desperately. The F-16 52+ is all over the Mirage anywhere ,any day and under any condition. I don’t understand why the US still refuse to deliver the Block 52+ to Taiwan..
If Gripen NG is selected weèd certainly LEASE som JAS39A/B or C/Ds in oder to fill the time gap before the arrival of the first NGs. If we go for F-18 the US Navy can easily accomodate our pressing airframe needs and redirect some of their previously ordered aircraft to the FAB…
One very influential Brazilian Defense industry observer told me tonight that the Rafale has been all but excluded from the bid leaving the Gripen and SH to fight each other. N Jobim`s position at this moment is a very, very dire one before Dilma…. He also said that F-X2 is still alive but will need to be posponed some moinths waiting for the hard economic times to clear…
Regards,
Hammer
Americans firmly believe that their AESA technology is far superior to any other nation and therefore they ( I mean the Congress ) will never agree on a full transfer of SH’s electronic and computer technology to Brazil, never .They would rather leave the field to other contenders without a fight if this is the condition .. I am convinced that Dilma will end up ordering the Swedish fighter as she can get as many as 72 Gripens to the same price as 36 Rafales ! Gripen will fulfill all the requirements of Brazilian Air Force.
