in the forms of SKD and CKD kits. How hard is that to fathom? HAL will not be manufacturing Rafales from the ground up by manufacturing all the parts initially. They’ll get to that around the time the 30-40th Rafale is supplied. the pattern is there to see from the Su-30MKI and Hawk production lines.

O.K but considering the total time frame of the procurement which is more or less 10 years ,this is still not much of a workload for Dassault plants in France.

Out of the 108 aircraft, at least 40 will arrive from France, in the form of kits etc. If the number goes up to 189 and the IAF asks for quick delivery, as they did with the Su30MKI, then the number of kits could go up to 60-70 airframes, with the rest of the 110 built with Indian materials.

All in all, the French companies will receive a windfall from this deal, not to mention the huge moolah they will make off spares for the initial 10 odd years, plus the weaponry and ground handling equipment.

Thales, Safran and Dassault execs are all probably chuckling to themselves over how 2012 has turned out for them.

Out of the 108 aircraft at least 40 will arrive from France?? are you sure?
is there any link confirming this?

I imagine that the B52+ F-16’s could be handled easily by the Rafale, especially with Meteor and AESA. The F-16 will be completely outclassed in both BVR and WVR. J-10b is prolly a closer match, but we really don’t know too much about it. I would still give Rafale the edge though.

Does anyone know if the PAF F-16’s have HMS? What about the Indian Rafales?

I don’t think this is a fair competition. .F-16 Block60 with AESA and AMRAAM against Rafale with AESA and Meteor would be fair.
The fighter that detects the other first and also takes the first shot inside the ‘No Escape Zone ‘of its missile would eventually win.
I would bet my money on the future Rafale with AESA and Meteor,
the present Rafale with PESA radar and MICA against Block 60 ? Hmmmm.. I am not so sure.

    +1

I remember Airbus getting very upset by Air India’s evaluation criteria when Air India selected Boeing 787 in preference to Airbus A350. Airbus threatened to take them to court, I think. Some years later Air India has a number of B787’s on order and zero A350’s on order.

Well ,Air France have selected Boeing 787 as well !!! Unfortunately the French companies have a celebrated tradition of filling lawsuits when they lose lucrative contracts.. Remember the Eurotunnel competition two years ago when the French managed Eurotunnel company chose Siemens high speed trains and dropped their own TGV, they went to court in London and got their butts kicked there . It was humiliating for Alstom .

    Then they’re idiots.

They would have felt much happier if all 126 fighters would be manufactured in France .

You may be right, i wasn’t taking setting up factory and all that involve into account, but over 40 years the operational cost makes up and surpasses just about anything.
On the weapons didn’t someone just post on integrating JDAM & AMRAAM C7 on Rafale ?

If these additional 80 fighters are US made, they will come straight from the assembly line of the manufacturer. It is insane to set up a second assembly line for 80 fighters. Its much cheaper to buy them directly. But I dont think India will consider something else than the Rafale.

In the short-term, maybe. In the long-term, India and Brazil are much more important both to the future of Rafale and to French interests more broadly.

I don’t deny this but Dassault needs further orders even in the short-term
to increase the capacity utilization in his plants until 2017 which is running at a very low level .Remember ,only 18 fighters will be produced in France ,the rest in India under licence and the whole procurement is spread over a period of 10 years starting 2015!
The same old problem with these licence productions, you sell technology, you sell know-how or even some components ,but your own qualified workforce don’t see much from the work.

This was related to exports only. I see that I wasn’t clear enough on that.

Saab has thus far secured contracts for 90 Gripens:
    South Africa: 28
    Czech Republic : 14
    Hungary : 14
    Thailand : 12
Switzerland : 22 (contract not signed yet)

Eurofighter has secured orders for 87 aircraft:
    Austria : 15
    Saudi Arabia : 72

We have to take into account that the exports of Gripens and Typhoons also account for national orders as well. The Swedes ordered 204 Gripens, but are operating 100 only. Hungary and the Czech republic have leased aircraft only as far as I know and the UK has reduced its order for Typhoons by a number equivalent to the sale to Saudi Arabia. Wrt the Eurofighter programme there are only 559 aircraft on contract. Additional orders might be secured from international customers, but the core nations won’t buy any additional aircraft according current plans and there isn’t too much room to change that decision.

    O.K Thanks ..

And now the win in India puts Dassault in a far more favourable position in the UAE as well as in Brazil.

This is the decisive and much-needed boost , I mentioned in one of my previous posts..

Within a single throw the Rafale will now overtake the Typhoon and the Gripen when it comes to the number of aircraft being sold,

I am sorry but I don’t understand how you come to this conclusion.
If you take the combined orders from 4 partners and add 72 for the Saudis and 15 for Austria you should be able to arrive at something like 700 + units for Typhoon if I am not mistaken

As far as the Rafale is concerned ,we have a total 294 orders or in other words, commitments from France so far + 126 for India makes ????
Do I make a serious mistake in math?

Defeated Typhoon in every competition they both joined. :diablo:

This is actually the main reason why I bet my money on Rafale in India long time ago. Why should it be different this time ?
Now , I am sure Brazil and the UAE would follow soon..

Forgot about his crazy “Italian-French connection hence Rafale shall win” conspiracy theory ? On the flipside, having been a professor of economics at Harvard he might have made a killing with Dassault shares in the last few hours 😉

Dassault is owned by EADS 46% and Dassault family 51% so who holds the remaining shares ?? a privileged few perhaps..I don’t think Dassault shares are available to an ordinary investor..

One question to everyone : Do you think the Typhoon would have won today if the Eurofighter Consortium had offered a better/lower price than the Rafale International ?

Rose more than 22% to the highest in 22 years. Hmm. Maybe, but the repeated number is suspicious. Particularly when the article goes on to tell us that the Rafale will be replacing Mirage 2Ks in Indian service.

This is very good for Dassault of course but a win in UAE (60) and Switzerland (22) would have made Dassault much happier as these 82 fighters would be entirely manufactured in France.

    >>the defense ministry was now considering buying another 80 or so jets and could invite bidders excluded from the current process to take part>>

That’s nonsense..It’s going to be the Rafale again..IAF will certainy want to avoid a logistics nightmare..
