What a sad looking place this is now. I’m sure it’s been said by many people before, but I used to spend many a happy hour at the crash gate, watching the comings and goings – and listening in with my old analogue air band receiver. We tried to get to the last airshow, but the roads around Binbrook were all solid with traffic and the police turned us away, saying the flying had been cancelled. We were pretty angry when we saw the 9 ship, flying through the gloom, on our way back home. But I will always remember a trip there with our Scout troop, sometime in the 70’s. We were shown around one of the hangers and a Lightning, and for some bizarre reason I recall a conversation about tyre pressures! We went into the control tower – were they pointed out the decoys and we were also shown the RADAR room, which I think was below the control tower, but I can’t remember for sure. I do remember it being dark, apart from the glow from the radar screens, and only being a young lad, trying to get my head around the fact you could see the Humber and Spurn Point on these things. The operator said “you see that blob there – it’s a flock of birds” I was amazed! Fond memories indeed, I don’t think I’d like to see it in its current state though. One of these days I’ll get down to Brunty for the taxi runs… and when I win the lottery, it’s off to Thunder City for a flight in one of their T5’s.

Back to reality 🙁 …time for a work break 😉

    Thanks for evoking those memories,

    Dean.

Haven’t done my photos yet (and having seen yours Gareth, I might not bother!)…

    My sentiments entirely!

Cracking shots Gareth. Love the third shot, with the vortices coming off the prop tips. I really must invest in a DSLR and long lens; my digital compact just doesn’t cut the mustard with these sort of shots – my tail up shots are pathetic! Shame the Spit couldn’t display, but a great day all the same – many thanks to the organisers.

    Go on then… here’s a few.

Fingers crossed that the tail up taxi run is still on today. I’m going anyway; the weather doesn’t look too bad, so here’s hoping. Will post some pics later, if I can get a decent shot.

So shocked to see this when I logged on – very sad news indeed. I will always remember his passion, enthusiasm and genuine love of aircraft when commentating on those airshow programs in the 60’s and 70’s. Tomorrow’s World was never the same after he left either. Another hero of mine, sadly taken from this world.

    Rest in peace Raymond.

he often talks about Sqd. Ldr. Jack Curry, flying the Linc on one engine – that must have been an awesome sight.

Actually, I got that wrong – I was talking to my father the other day about it. Jack Curry was his Sqd. Ldr. but it was a Flt. Lt. Birch who flew the Linc on one engine, during an open day. There’s a photograph of somebody else doing the same in ‘Lincoln at War’, coming directly towards the camera about 10’ off the deck… on one engine… amazing!

Your breaking the copyright laws by making the scan from the book in the first place without permission. Rules for the UK can be found here

Hmmm… that’s a shame, I had a good one lined up for my ‘Forgotten Bombers – Avro Lincoln’ thread and the ‘How low can you go!’ thread. Never mind – glad I checked first. I see from your webpage you’re going through the process of obtaining permission yourself. By the way, do you need any information on the Bloodhounds that where based at North Coates? I have a contact at the flying club there and I believe they have some records of the base… no idea what though.

I don’t want to hijack this thread with my query above, on Lindholme Varsities, so I’ve posted a new one – http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=62624

It would be nice to clear up the Hull Varsity mystery though.

I remember that! I was working at Easington then and used to pass it every day – about 17 years ago! I never stopped to look, but I remember at the time thinking it was either a Varsity or a Valetta. Which is quite spooky really, because I was only just thinking of posting a thread, asking for information on Varsities. In particular, any that were based at RAF Lindholme between 1952 and 1955. The only surving examples I know of are at Newark, Cosford and Duxford.

David – Is the nose going to be on display anywhere?

I can’t oblige with a Scampton-era pic, but here she is back in 1968 at Biggin Hill…

Nice one – thanks for the pic Scouse.

Maybe the pic I’m after will be in one of the books on NX611 – I’ll have to have a look if I go to EK on the 16th. From the following website it would appear the Upkeep bomb was just placed in front of NX611 though.

Apologies for being slightly off-thread here, but whilst searching for a pic of ‘JJ’ as gate guardian at RAF Scampton, I came across this story on a few websites:-

In the late 1950s, due to rebuilding work at RAF Base Scampton, home of the Dam Buster Squadron during WW2, the gate guardian – then a 22,000lb Grand Slam bomb designed by Barnes Wallis – had to be moved.

Efforts to lift it with a crane proved futile, as it was heavier than expected; on closer examination, it was discovered to still be filled with live explosives. It was cautiously trucked away and detonated on a test range.

It is unclear when or how a live bomb managed to be put on display, but it seems that it was in place for well over a decade.

    Frightening!

Just to add to the nostalgia, here’s RF398 at the RAF 50th anniversary show at Abingdon in 1968. Ghost(s) must have taken the day off!

I’ve seen a very similar shot to that elsewhere, but not at that resolution – excellent!

Allan, OK on your Lincoln Histories – no problem. I wouldn’t mind more information on Roundel Research though… who they are, what they do etc. I can’t find any information on the web, so I’ll send an e-mail off to the address in your above post.

I don’t have any specific Lincolns in mind, just any that were based at Lindholme from 1952 to 1955… but that probably covers a lot, so it’s OK thanks. E-mail on its way, by the way.

    Thanks again,

    Dean.

    Lindholme Lincolns

Bigmal – Many thanks for that information. My Father had a lot of photographs pinched, just before he was de-mobbed, so has no record of the aircraft he worked on. It would be great to track down a Form 700 with his signature on, but I believe the RAF’s policy was to destroy these soon after the aircraft were disposed of. He also worked on Varsity’s, but I’ll leave that for another thread. I’ll ask him if he knew Jimmy Kendal.

Two stories that come up regularly: – Somebody came into the hanger where my Father was working, as white as a sheet, and said he thinks he’s just seen Lindholme Willy!.. or was it Charlie? Also, he often talks about Sqd. Ldr. Jack Curry, flying the Linc on one engine – that must have been an awesome sight.

Dakkg651 – Didn’t see anything, but I did get an eerie feeling when I sat in the rear turret!

ChiefofFairies – That’s excellent, thank you very much. Interesting to note that RF389 had red spinners. No problem with sending you the pic, although it will probably only be marginally better. The original is only 4” x 3” and you can only just make out the numbers on that, but I’ll try a higher resolution scan tonight when I get home. ‘Lincoln Histories’ is that a publication I can obtain? I wouldn’t mind looking up other Lindholme based Lincolns. My Father has ‘Lincoln at War’, which I see has just been reprinted.

    Many thanks for the replies.

    David,

According to the author’s biography, this website is based on the Bomber Command War Diaries; hope this helps.
