Dean, from what I can make out, Gustav Hamel covered this area during the “Wake Up England!” tour.

Robbo, (or should I say Claude 😉 ) thanks for that. My appetite has now been whetted! I’ve found snippets about him on the web, but there’s not a great deal of information… I might look for a book on the subject – any recommendations?

    Thanks again,

    Dean.

Does anyone know why a Catalina was flying north over Hull on Friday around 5pm?

Phillip – It came over Grimsby at 18:00 Hrs (BST), you must have seen it just after that. According to the website it was en route from Norwich to Sunderland. (The link in the ‘Spotted’ thread has been updated now, so it doesn’t show up).

Dean, I’ve got a scrapbook containing all the original press cuttings from this event (An Ebay bargain at £4.95) and several books by Harry Harper, the Mail’s aviation correspondent.

I’ll see if these provide any clues when I get back home next week.

Thanks for that Robbo, look forward to seeing what you might find.

    PA474 Over Grimsby

11:50 Hrs. PA474 has just performed two low passes over Grimsby… don’t know what the occasion was, but had a superb view from the garden. Two historics in two days… we are doing well 🙂

Yes, that’s the plan, along with the Harvard and Stearman. Probably another Mustang as well, lets hope the weather is kind.

Excellent! Hopefully I’ll be there on the Sunday… Fingers crossed for a repeat of last year’s weather!

Stunning… simply stunning! Many thanks for sharing them. Will she be at Breighton again, for the summer fly-in?

Excellent work Steve, very professional. Look forward to seeing the updated version.

No problem with Firefox at this end, BTW.

    Keep up the good work.

True and proud, born a ‘Croft Baker’ child in the year 19……:D .

To qualify you have to be born within the triangle of Isaac’s Hill, Six Hill and Beacon Hill.

Yes, I was born there as well :D.

    To the uninformed:-
Back in the annals of time, the high ground of Cleethorpes was called Megg’s Island. People born in this area are called Meggies.

Anyway, I digress. I’ve had a good look through all of my Grimsby and Cleethorpes books, but, unfortunately, I haven’t found any photographs of the Austers. I’m sure I’ve seen one somewhere though – maybe in one of the Grimsby Telegraph’s ‘Bygone’ supplements. Maybe an enquiry to the Archives Dept. would turn something up.

Considering I’ve been into aircraft since as long as I can remember, and up to this point hadn’t flow abroad, my first flight was actually quite late in life, and was rotary. G-BGKM – a Bond Helicopters Aerospatiale Dauphin SA365C, sometime in 1985, out of Strubby to the Viking Gas Field.

First fixed wing would be G-AMPZ – Air Atlantique’s Dak at one of Humberside Airport’s shows – shame they stopped doing them.

First flex-wing would be G-MWWG – my Cousin’s Pegasus Q Microlight, out of North Coates, which he has since sold on.

First Group A was a Piper Warrior, can’t remember the reg., also out of North Coates to Skegness and back.

A little before my time but I was aware of it. I’m sure I’ve seen a photograph somewhere in a book – I’ll do a bit of digging and see if I can find it.

Post #16 on here:- http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=252532 confirms the pilot as Jim Crampton.

What I do remember on Cleethorpes beach, and would come under ‘flights’, was a visit by Hoverlloyd’s SR.N6 Swift, sometime in the mid-to-late 60’s. I vividly remember being scarred witless when it started up… blimey it was loud! My parents have some slides of it… must look for a slide scanner sometime!

    FMK.6JOHN – Are you a ‘true’ Meggie… born on the hill? 😀

Willip26 – Welcome to the forum.

This memorial to 78 Squadron is just down the road from Breighton, in the churchyard of All Saints Church, Bubwith.
