#265, North Luffenham Dean, not sure about the craters though. It’s owned by the army now I believe so perhaps they’ve been blowing things up, which they like to do.

That’s North Luffenham. It’s now an Army barracks and the Royal Engineers use it to train in setting up rough field sites for Harriers and so on – I’d guess they were using the runway to train on bomb damage repairs.

North Luffenham it is. I have a relative that lives at Edith Weston, I’ll ask him if he knows anything. Struggling with #269 – any chance of a clue?

    Toooooo easy! Digby

Hmm… it was a bit too easy that wasn’t it!

    #261 Folkingham

Yes it’s Folkingham. Until I started looking, I had no idea there were so many Thor sites in the county!

I think this will be another easy one. Coincidentally it’s another Thor site, which narrows it down a bit, but what’s interesting here is the bomb craters across the runway – what’s the story there?

#241 – Crikey! That took some finding! I reckon it’s Southrop? Here’s a relatively easy one then.

Dean – another Memory Map user, eh?

Yes, it’s an excellent program, especially with the aerial photos.

#241 is a bit of a poser, I haven’t got a clue at the moment. Can’t stay on here long tonight, so here’s another to keep you going.

The problem I had was my Hucknall isn’t shown in such high quality on Google Earth, see…

    I find http://www.flashearth.com/ much better.

    (Dean – you’re in Bomber County=East Mids, so you’re bound to know!)…

I only knew because I’d seen it the other night, flying round the area on memory map looking for obscure airfields ;). It’s a little too far south for me to be familiar with – I’m in Grimsby; which I still class as being in Lincolnshire – it was when I was born! Then they created South Humberside . And now we’re in North East Lincolnshire :(. But at least we’ve got ‘Lincolnshire’ back into the county name now… rant over! Back to the thread – interesting pic. Why on earth did they put it there and not on the land to the NW?

#229 – Is Hucknall, but I haven’t a clue what the round object is! It looks like an antenna of some sort!

#226 – Donna Nook? If so there was no runway just a peritrack, part of which still exists. Re #224, it’s not far from Wellingore.

Yes, it is Donna Nook. OK on the peritrack; I read that 206 Sqdn. were based there for a short time and assumed there’d been a runway, sorry about that.

#224 – A sneaky one that! Wouldn’t have got it without the clue – RFC Leadenham?

I’d need a few clues for post 224 . In the meantime, here’s something a little different. There was a runway here once, but exactly where it was I don’t know.

Difficult one! I’m a big Lightning fan, but purely on looks I’m going to have to agree with the Hunter aficionados on here, with the Lightning a VERY close second. I’ve always liked the Gnat as well. Nick Mason’s ‘Yellowjack’ Gnat put on a display at Old Warden several years ago – that looked stunning against the clear blue sky, using it’s smoke system; whatever happened to it?

    Dean K post 206

Good one Dean… it is Caister(Caistor ?) Nr Brigg Lincs

Yes, it is Caistor; opened in 1940 as a satellite airfield of Kirton-in-Lindsey, with grass runways. First used by Defiants of 264 Sqdn., later by 15 (P) Advanced Flying Unit and then 53 OTU. Flying ceased in 1944 and the station was closed in 1945, then re-opened as a Thor missile base between 1959 and 1963.

Dean & Webpilot – Yes, it’s Kelstern. Well done. So is Dean’s aerial photo.

It was, apparently an experiment in hauling Lincolns sideways into T2 hangars. IIRC something to do with wingspan and max door width. The rails are actually from the Grimsby tram network and were ‘surplus’.

I think there must have been something subliminal going on when I chose that one 😮 ; I really couldn’t think where that system had been trialled. If I find the article, I’ll post it on here, it makes interesting reading.

    Here’s another.

Congratulations WebPilot. Are there any other unidentified ones on here?… I’ve lost the thread, as it were! I still can’t think of where cdp206’s post 181 is. I know the story behind it, but it just wont come 🙁 . I think this one’s a little harder than my previous ones… but then again, it’s probably not.
