Has anyone got any interior shots of this aircraft they could post. Last time I was at Duxford (’bout a month ago) I could faintly make out the control column through the “Davis-Monthan” type white canopy paint.
What’s that all about? Has the interior been classified or something??
This man’s modelling skills are truly incredible. How does anyone achieve THAT level of skill? Brilliant.
I’m slightly confused as to why people like Steven Fry, who apparently wrote the script, would want to get involved in such a project. It would be obvious from the very beginning that the name of Gibson’s wonderful hound would be “offensive” to such people.
I imagine that the values of genuine heroes like Guy Gibson, as representitive of the calibre of Bomber Command personnel, would be held up for ridicule by Fry and his ilk.
I remember reading during the first Gulf War, how the Guardian was running an ad hoc competition to find the the British officer with the plumbiest accent. This was while our people were actually fighting and dying.
I for one, would like to see a film about Steven Fry and his kind, showing them warts and all for what they really are.
I for one will never watch this historically inaccurate crap. Richard Todd will always be tops.
Gibson was a true veteran long before the Dams Raid. A warrior of great courage, intelligence and leadership. How many such men can a nation afford to lose?
And what about that 70s French series, THE AERONAUTS. Part of the theme tune went: “…when the do or die aeronauts F L Y.”
Very sad news. The War Walks Series was superb. From the very first moments of the first episode (Agincourt) the haunting sounds of a Medieval chant, I was captivated. I’ve watched them over and again since.
RIP Richard. A gentleman and a scholar.
Diamond 9
Did anyone ever see an episode of The Twilight Zone called “Diamond 9 Is Down” It was about a North American B-25 Mitchell that came down in the desert in WW2. One of the crew, who survived, goes back, or THINKS he goes back to the desert and his crash-landed but intact B-25. I’m sure this episode was based on Lady Be Good as this would have been around 1960ish.
By coincidence??? Was at East Kirkby today, they have an excellent display of the Lady Be Good incident.
Goxhill
Was up there a few weeks ago. Bloke walking his snarling mutt told me it was owned by a local farmer called “Faulding.” Hope that’s of some use. Took a photo while I was up
there.
Early Lightnings
Many thanks for the above replies. Very helpful and much appreciated.
I have some of mk1a cockpits plus several pictures of 192 plus her original ejection seat.
192 is in great shape and looks lovely in the dark with her cockpit powered up.
How is she coming along as not been over to her recently to see how things going ?
Hi m8. Yes, have got more time at the moment so have been “getting some in.”
Yesterday, got the top left panel (with Standby Artificial Horizon) fitted back in and, got the drying cell back in behind it. However, there are gaps in the panel (and others) that could be for switches/pillar lamps etc, hence the need for some close-up photos. It’s frustrating, there are no end of photos of the later marks, but the early ones are like Rocking Horse droppings.
Beaus
What an awesome machine the Beaufighter was. One of the few WW2 aircraft where the pilot was sat right at the front. Those two mighty Hercules engines either side. Press the firing button and 4 20mm cannons and 6 .303 machine guns let rip, impressive, even by todays standard. If only we had a flyer……..
Defiant
There was an article in FlyPast many Moons ago about an intact Defiant in a Scottish Loch. Apparently the gunner was drowned in the ditching. Can anyone expand on this?
How about a full stick of 31 bombs?………
Wouldn’t want to get in the way of that lot!!!!!.
John.
You can see this awesome machine at Duxford. Thankfully, she’s now under cover in the Conservation Area awaiting some long overdue TLC. Good luck to her.
Stirling
I’m with you all the way re’ the Stirling, Hornchurch. Just think of it, the rippling waters of a Norwegian lake start to bubble, then the nose of a Short Stirling breaks surface…what a moment THAT would be. You never know.
Our armed forces exist to defend our freedoms and our form of democracy. To talk of a military coup is a slap in the face to everyone who has fought for those freedoms.
I disagree with the decision to scrap the Nimrod and I will show my disapproval at the ballot box – that’s how it works here.
Oh really, and who, pray tell, are you intending to vote for that has a realistic chance of winning, AND will implement policies that will rebuild the British armed forces (and supporting industrial base) back to a sane level?
We all know the Labour party record on defence. We can see what Tory and Lib-Dem are doing. So, who’s left?
“That’s how it works here.” He says. Look around you, nothing works anymore.
Except perhaps JCBs smashing up a £4b aircraft project on the direct orders of the vary people you seem so keen to defend.
