Nimrod shame

I think it’s time you cooled off. You will have your opportunity to protest at the next election should you choose to do so. Talking of a military coup will bring you to the attention of goodness knows who to the disadvantage of nobody but yourself.

No intention of cooling off, Orion.
You say I will have an “opportunity to protest at the next election.” Well, just which of tweedle-de and tweedle-dum should I vote for? The only other party that has a realistic chance of winning is Labour, and we all know their track record on defence. I certainly do.
The destruction of those Nimrods is a criminal folly. Add to which, we have the possible closure of Lyneham, Marham, Leauchars, Kinloss….the loss of the Harrier force and Ark Royal. The loss of more frigates and destroyers…the list goes on…and on.
I stand by my original comments. 100%.

Insanity!

This disgusting so-called “government” gets more frighteningly unbelieveable by the day. Quite happy to virtually destroy Britain’s armed forces whilst at the same time giving BILLIONS in overseas aid, then more BILLIONS to the so-called “EU.” This includes, for example, huge sums given to India which has its own space program AND nuclear weapons. Utter madness. Or is it something more sinister?
In the late 60s and up to the mid-to-late 70s when this country last seemed on the brink of oblivion, there was talk of a military coup in this country. Perhaps its time to dust off/update those plans….
This is a question i’ve always wanted to ask, so here goes:

What if the 1957 Defence White Paper hadn’t been written?

Would the aircraft projects that were going to be cancelled have made it into operational service?
Great point, 568. Just think of it. SR.177s climbing out rocket-style over the North Sea to intercept snooping ‘Bears.’ A pair of Hawker P.1121s roaring off Marham’s runway (utilising the ventral intake long before the F.16 even heared of)…
I think the late great Barnes Wallis put it best: “We should have become Mistress of the skies, as we were once Mistress of the Seas. What a fearful opportunity this country has lost, and all because a politician would not believe a technician.”
Who was right and who was wrong? Just look around you.

I listened to this broadcast on Coast to Coast radio a few weeks back. It features the author Keith Chester and his book Strange Company which appears to be a reasonably authorative account of wartime encounters with Foo Fighters by fliers on all sides.

Surprisingly, quite a few of the accounts he rates most highly were by crews of RAF Bomber Command.

There appears to be no evidence whatsoever that the Foo Fighters were secret German technology. What they are (or were) however is a matter of conjecture.

The interview is a bit tedious in places but interesting if you are into such mysteries:-

Thanks for the info Air Ministry, I shall enjoy watching these. According to the book “The Hunt For Zero Point” by Nick Cook, he seemed to be of the opinion that these were indeed of German origin. Curious.

Well, sorry but, your last post, #18, made it look like an attack, not on a personal level but just in general. Hence why I replied. It would’ve been in a different manner what you said now, then. Don’t take it personally, you know.

I think a lot of fuss was made back then. My girlfriend, who is Arabic, had a British Grandfather who worked on the TSR-2, what his role was exactly I’m not quite sure, I’ll need to have a chat to the boss’s (girlfriend) mum about that when I see her again, although his role was, I believe wasn’t major but a minor role. Anywho, I remember the ‘mum’ mentioning that there was quite an effort to save the TSR-2 and he tried everything in his power to help with it.

Your last point is spot on, though.

What if it WAS an attack…are you saying I dont have the right???

I’ve just about finished my TSR2 book – so I guess it’ll be published in a couple of months or so. Can you imagine how utterly bored I am by TSR2’s now?! 😀

Blasphemy. Chox, we need to talk.

Anyone know the serial number of the Westland Whirlwind helicopter used in the film “Robbery?” Just cant quite make it out. Wonder if it still survives?

Cracking picture, superb. But err, is the pilot called “Damien” by any chance?
Look at the serial.

Whats new? We’ve been going though this same old crap for years? Iknow it’s not good, but moaning like a little, sissy, school girl isn’t going to change anything, governments don’t listen to anyone unless if theres a sniff of saving money. Get over it! It’s life! Live with it!

Besides, what makes Britian so great is the ones that think positive about the things we have and say f**k off to the ones that try to ruin things for us. Brits before us didn’t let the Germans bother them when they were getting a good paisting during the Blitz and what not! So why should we, todays Brits, let an environment loving, over-paid, over-hyped, penny saving, gutless wonder PM & his tea boys bother us!

Been called a lot of things in my time but, “sissy school girl.” Wow, I love it.
I have to say though that your philosophy is all wrong. If enough people had made enough fuss back in 1957, that idiot Duncan Sands might have been stopped in his tracks.
If enough people had made enough fuss back in 1965, TSR2 might have become a massive British technological success.
If enough people had made enough fuss back in 1988, Alan Bond’s HOTOL might have taken over the satellite launching industry from the Americans.
THAT’S THE POINT. You damn well MAKE them listen. It’s OUR money.
For the record, I love the Harrier. If we’d had a decent government that recognised the worth of British technology, we could have cleaned-up with that aircraft…a production run to match the equally great (and equally British) Hunter.

Why? Do you really think China, Russia, India etc. is going to invade Britain.

You dont have to “invade” to cause problems. Military impotence will prove to be a calamitous criminal folly, the bill for which will one day be presented. All I’m saying, is that Britain should maintain military capability at the highest level it can afford. There is no alternative.
Dont you people EVER learn?

“Harrier Celebration.” Just what the hell is there to “celebrate?” This country is now weaker and more vulnerable than ever. Oh right, break out the Champers. 😡

China, Russia, India…getting stronger by the day. Meanwhile the RAF and RN become barely visible to the naked eye. God help Britain.

Great information Planeman6000, really like the airborne shots. My Dad, who sadly passed away recently, used to work on Bloodhound support systems when employed by Ferranti in the 1960s. He always spoke fondly of those days.
