As well as the two Smithsonian Aircraft Museums in DC there are some interesting aircraft at the Washington Navy Yard (note that you have to call ahead) and the National Postal Museum
In Virginia there are:
in Richmond, the Virginia Aviation Museum which has a really interesting collection plus a few aircraft at the Virginia Science Museum. Further south (I think ) is Jerry Yagen’s Fighter Factory with a fine collection of airworthy warbirds, then heading down to Hampton/Norfolk are three diverse museums, Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, Air Power Park and Virginia Air & Space Center.
From here you can head to North Carolina:
going south down the coast gets to the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kittyhawk, then inland in North Carolina to North Carolina Aviation Museum, Carolinas Aviation Museum, and Western North Carolina Air Museum. There are a few aircraft on display around MCAS Cherry Point and there’s also a pretty good aviation collection in two museums at Fort Bragg which seem to be still open to the public. Finally there’s the Battleship North Carolina.
In South Carolina:
there’s the excellent museum at Patriots Point.
And that’s just the main museums …

Here’s a few pictures of the B-24 at Werribee a year ago.
That was actually about the first day they had reopened to the public after being closed for a long time due to a building collapse in one of their hangars. Remedying the problem had obviously slowed down the restoration. The intention was (is?) to keep the aircraft at Werribee but in another, bigger, hangar sot he aircraft could be moved outside on occasion. – I can’t remember if it was hoped to use an existing one or build a new one

Can anyone put my pic post on the WIX board? Tks…
If you just need the web space for the pictures you should be able to copy the URLs of the pictures above into the [img] tags on WIX and reuse the same files. If that doesn’t work, drop me a PM and I can copy them into my space.
It looks like it will be a very nice, and different, addition to the circuit.

Why is the P-39 difficult to enter from the port side then?
From this view of Steven Grey’s one, there’s the throttle quadrant and trim wheel in the way

I also believe that the later model Corsairs from the -5 to the -7 have steps on the right side.
Ryan
It’s all Corsairs isn’t it? The early ones just have a hole in the flap to form a step while the later ones have a sprung cover over the step.
Also, how about the greatest fighter of WW2 – the P-51D? You can probably get into the cockpit from either side but you have to press a button on the right to open the canopy

Am I right in thinking this is the only Hind in a UK museum?
Duxford have an ex-German one – but it’s not as pretty as that one!

Excuse me, but what means “SOP”?
Standard Operating Procedure or words to that effect
I’m afraid I forget which train you need to get, but you can get a train to within a 30-40 minute walk of the museum.
The train departs from Rome Ostiense about every half hour to Bracciano which is a few km away. Some also stop at Vigna Di Valle. See Trenitalia. I think there are then local buses going the right way
(Haven’t actually been there myself yet but I’m planning to visit next month)

It does look a bit like this view of Black Magic under restoration – i.e. the flat bits are the sides of the nose – though I’m not totally convinced?????????

Hi all
A chap in Sydney has a Dauntless salvaged from the Pacific under restoration to fly – does anybody know a lot more about this – i have seen the pics and it looks good and he is supposed to be serious – I will be in Sydney soon and would like to follow up on it.

Googling for “Sydney SBD Restoration” gives a link to a Barnstormers ad from Craig Turner in Sydney looking for SBD parts – the ad has various contact details
Hope this helps

Hi John
Tony A
I suspect that all would hold formation pretty well – The pioly is no slouch noe the Nimrod.
What I was meaning was how would the inter-war Hind/Demon/Nimrod/Fiat/… (and don’t forget the Gauntlet?) formation get on following the slow three-ship TFC/HAC/Shuttleworth Bristol Fighter fleet which, all going well, may very well be available for next year.
Tony Andrews
What about two Nimrods, a Hind , a Demon, Two Gladiators, Some Polikarpovs and the Fiat – Now you are talking serious Biplane Grunt!!! and certainly better than the Supermarine glamour parade !!!!!
Would they be able to hold formation OK behind the three Bristol Fighters?

Here’s G-ERDS at the Sun’N’Fun Splash-In in 2003

To be fair to the collection, there were several announcements on the PA prior to airshow starting (there may have been some during the show but I couldn’t hear the speakers). These anouncements DID say where to go to join, how much it cost, and what the benefits are
Tony Andrews
I belive I saw a ground shot showing the Mustang at FL.
If it was there, did it participate in the flying display?
No, she didn’t fly in the show, just a short excursion on the Sunday morning
