In order to get out of the more or less pointless comments on assessments against unknown criterias, it would be interesting of trying to pinpoint Gripens (E/F) market segment,

    Best fit
+Air to air/recon more important than Air to ground
    +Medium range but lighter loads
+Reaction speed, availability and turnaround time important
    +Expeditiary capacity/ dispersed small airbases
+Best value for money (cause of political problem below)
+Lack of AWACS support, data links make up part of this

    When NOT to choose gripen
-All missions that combine heavy load and long range!
-Deep strike against advanced air defence JSF>>Rafale>Gripen
-Air-Air in 1:1 duel vs VLO platforms and without UHF radar backup Eurofighter (biggest radar!) > Gripen
-Need for 100% political independance or super power political support, Rafale>>Gripen
-General suspecion of single engine types (despite the theoretical difference in loss rate)

    Comments anyone? Additional info?

Sorry but that’s a lame excuse. Yes details are missing, but do you really think there is somwhere a page that say Gripen is reaching all requirements only to say later in the genrals summaries that Gripen is lacking and in the even of the Gripen been chosen anyway a new evaluation should be done to properly test the NG variant, which wasn’t done clearly.

As been said above if the only requirement was cost, then Typhoon like in Brazil would not even have been selected and Rafale wouldn’t have bother. Or they would have gone for 18 aircraft proposal from the start.

I would greatly appreciate is the “Rafalle” Fanboys (couldn’t stop messing up the spelling like some of the other trolls use “Flyväppnet”) could either leave this thread alone or try to be build a case around their statements. To me its amazing how some “Rafffalle” persons claim their precious fighter to be supperior in all areas!! When it comes to the areas of operation cost (=remaining money to train pilots, buy weapons and future “Paper plane upgrades” like F3+/F4 and Gripen E/F) datalinks, availability, recognizance. Considering all this I still think Rafale is a great achievment for a country that will face serious growth and budget problems for the next one or two decades. As we all know in the long run the available funds for future upgrades will be very important for the future effect of the system.

Take note how the moron highlight FULL LOAD in capital letters,
and understand that F-35 won’t even get below half the RCS of F-18 in that loadout, yet his Rafale has only a single percent that of F-18 😮

Unlikley that thi sis true unless you include active cancellation under such circumstances that the active cancellation can “handle it” (not to to many senders & receivers and not above signalprocessin capabilities of Spectra).

    Why single engine?
A single engine a/c has sence if you have a bigger number of a/c and the bird strike driven losts are eliminated by the lower price.
But europ has high manufacturing cost and the potential fleet size for europ nations will the low.
So today this concept has sence for export to aisa oder latin america from my point of view.

In that case: What’s about this concept?

Single engine / twin engine safty has an almost a theoretical difference now days, buying and running cost of single /twin engine is a bigger difference! I dont think Europe has high costs, I know from my profession that high quality engineers are cheaper in Sweden than in most Far East countries.
Nice aircraft on your photo, but for SAAB its better to keep the design as similar as possible to Gripens canard+delta solution

There´s not much of a Gripen in the FS2020 design (if any).
The FS2020 is a much, much bigger and heavier beast, with completely diferent airframe, a new engine and almost certainly new systems to boot.

    Cheers

2 engine drawing was submitted for Korea but FS 2020 is clearly one engine. All business logic implies a slighly bigger than Gripen NG and GE414EPE with Gripen NG avionics. Not even my wildest fanboy dreams will take SAAB into Medium weight/twin engine market segment.

Clearely one engine, size according to scale 17m long & 10,5m wingspan.
    http://www.nyteknik.se/nyheter/fordon_motor/flygplan/article269250.ece

Clearly one engine, same size indicated after “amateure measurement of missile size vs airframe size”
    http://www2.foi.se/rapp/foir2775.pdf

More info about Swedens Gripen E/F requirements and the Gripen development path is expected within days. The logic is a) less ambitious C/D+ and E/F and more focus on possible G/H OR b) priority on E/F (Gripen ~NG).

    SAAB/ Sweden to the list

SAAB/ Sweden has been studing the VLO concept “FS2020/FS2025.” If Gripen is winning Brasil or enough small countries the evolution of of Gripen NG (E/F) could “quickly” be put in the FS2020 or Gripen G/H, that is a “Gripen based” VLO airframe.

What are the main Pros of the Rafale compared to Gripen (pls skip the obvious size & load thing), I’m sure that they are many but certainly Not; size and field of view of AESA radar, Max speed, Data link and all that MadRat & Phantom II mentioned.

Its in the eye of the beholder

We all know that all aircraft have their strong points and you can get your desired answer if you match the question accordingly. Availability is one of Gripens strong points and to the best of my knowledge nobody has claimed to come close. IMO 22 gripens =26 Rafale:diablo:

Looks good Robban, now add one concealed station under each air intake and 2 hidden stations behind intakes/landing gear!
