Today the general defense spending plan for 2016-20 was released. It states that a new mediumranged SAM system will be introduced in the period for one of the 2 battilions. IT has to be done on a shoestring budget so my guess is eiher A) rb23 Bamse to be acivated or B) more likely NAMSAS since we already have the control centers and that the Amraams can be reused when Meteors take their place in the airforce. Good solution IF we can stay clear of the crappy sentimental radar…the 2nd battilion to be upgraded after 2021.

software of MS20 in final testing

The new MS20 software for Gripen C/D is in final testing now,
    http://www.fmv.se/sv/Nyheter-och-press/Nyheter-fran-FMV/FMV-provar-ny-mjukvara-till-JAS-39-Gripen/

As usual some information just give rise to more question,

Weapons, Full meteor and SBD capacity,

    Sensors,
new radar functions PS05/mk4 with improved SAR ???
    Ground collision avoidance system

    Others
Digital CAS support, Rover and more???
Improved self protection, EW upgrade, libraries or more????
Improved multi ship fusion / communication including for example improved link 16????
Improved recon capacities, better integration of SPK-39???
    Improved availability and robustness

    Other physical changes
    improved NBC protection

Agrippa, your are probably lurking in the shadows….. get out and help us to settle the questions!!

@Urban, “new weapon ejectionlaunch pods” where did you hear or see anything about this? New pylons for sure but pods?

Probably only for the Brazilian wide screen equipped GripenE’s

New under fuselage pylons to be developed and 214 pylons ordered for Gripen E. Would be interesting to see the amount of LO adaptation of these..

Sweden and Finland is slowly increasing cooperation, currently it involves common situational awareness and basic preparations to each others airbases.

Here is an “economic” approach to MMI, I expect the marginal value of additional information shown to the pilot to be declining but the cost/complexity of providing that info is increasing probably exponentially.

How much is sensor fusion is required to for almost full efficiency? When is it better to provide more training or change of doctrine instead? As an example the Gripen philosophy is to leave more decisions for the pilot rather than to the ground and with less info displayed but with a high degree of multi ship sensor fusion (I do NOT imply that this is better, just that it is a different approach).

What real MMI benefits are really out of range for the 4,5 Gens? Does the total integration of F35 increase the complexity so much that the future upgrades will suffer (in performance or financially?)

Nice but lets hope that IR based PAWS-II will get integrated instead of the UV-sensor MAWS-300

    @MSphere, several things combined here.
I’ve read about the planned reduction of flying time in Norway with the introduction of F35, searched but could find the source again. Any help would be appreciated.

My post was intended for double meaning, hopefully the improved MMI will really allow for lower costs and higher performance but best way to lower operation cost is to cancel all flying!!! Perhaps this will be the move to prove the cost efficiency of the F35..

@OooShiny, unlikely that F35 operators will Continue to fly like before. The improved MMI of F35 will allow norwegian pilots to cut their flying time compared to F16. How much of this that is an actual saving at equal performance and how much that is just an effort in the “Noble art of Accountning” to make the cost more patable, is unknown to me.

Sorry to return to Gripen but you are far, far off the chart here. Note gripen is built to operate from small artic airfields with only 3-4 ac per airfield. Norway has been using few but bigger air bases.

@Vnomad, gripen has ZERO need for a dragchute and has been operating in the artic for many years..
Even if the F35s dragchute would have alimited drag, does anyone here with good aerodynamic know how dare to make an estimate of the added drag index?

@hopsalot, my main Point is that the 4 aircraft that Will be based in the US does not contribut to national defense at all.
