Very nice pictures! Does anyone know the nickname for the CAF’s Dash 8? It’s something to do with its probiscus nose… 🙂

Very nice photo’s Brycheiniog! I wish we had more than one airshow that was worth going to every year in British Columbia.

    Hi Elliott,

Sure! I’m at work right now so I don’t have the photo available at the moment. Do you have a new email addy? I tried several times to contact you regarding the part I found, but had no replies.

    Cheers,

    Todd

    Hi Elliott,

My trip to Wales was very eventful! I had the BBC knock at my B&B door at 7:30 the morning after I got to Llanidloes. I had a nice two hour conversation
about my Uncle and his crash site. At that point I hadn’t even been up to see it. That evening I went up to have a look at the area where the Whitley came down. I took my GPS with me. It turned off as we got near Waun Garno and turned on again at the gate which leads to the pathway to the hillside. Five minutes after we got there a freak thunderstorm came out of the blue. So we waited for it to pass. I think roughly 20 minutes. We didn’t get a chance to look at the crashsite that night. So, we decided to go for some pub grub. On the way down from Waun Garno (the way we came up) we noticed the road had been completely washed out by a flash flood. So we backed up and went to a northern road, only to find it was washed out too… I think we spent an hour looking for a way down from the hillside that night! Talk about bizarre!

The next day proved to be much nicer with warm weather. We did find a part from my Uncles Whitley. It was near the top of the hillside which leads to the windmill farm. I also talked to a fellow who’s father came up shortly after the crash to see if he could be of assistance. It proved to be quite a
gruesome site. The rear turret of the Whitley was found a half mile north of the crash site with the gunner still inside. They also found someone outside the plane who had apparently managed to walk or crawl away from the wreckage and die. Anyhow there’s more to the story but it would take me forever to write it up! Still on the hunt for a picture of Whitley P5057!

    Cheers,

Where is the Hampden located in the UK? Is it being restored to flight/static status? I have heard rumours here in Vancouver that there is not much left to restore…. I hope the rumours are false. What a shame it would be to have only one Hampden left in the world! I’m already choked that there are no complete Whitley’s.

Elliott if you’re reading this…Have you got most of a Whitley recovered from various wrecks?

    Re:Handley Page Hampden

    Hi Dave,

Sorry, I noticed you were from New Zealand about 5 minutes after I posted the reply. Most of the planes at the museum are static display only. However, they do have a SE5a replica, Harvard, Tiger Moth, Waco, and a Fleet Finch MkII that do fly on nice sunny days. I’m sure they would like everything to fly, but the reality is that the money for ground up restorations isn’t there…
I can’t wait for the Halifax restoration to finish up in Ontario. She’s gonna be a beauty!

    Re:Handley Page Hampden

    Hi Dave,

They’re just about finished with the Hampden. The instruments are inside the museum awaiting some finishing touches from the looks of it. All the planes in the photo’s that I submitted are kept outside. The weather in Langley is not all that bad. I think we receive about as much snow as you do every year in the U.K. It was like a furnace out there today – around 37 degrees. The museum is hoping to lease out a larger part of land from the airport in the near future. They need it! I’ll see if I can find a photo of all the aircraft inside.
The Lysander used to belong to a flying doctor from Vancouver Island who made daily trips to and from his practice. They have been doing restorations on it for a few years. I know the museum does not make a lot of money and really appreciate donations. I can’t wait to see the Lysander finished!

    Cheers,

    Re:Abbotsford International Airshow

    Hi Everyone,

Abbotsford is about an hour south east of Vancouver, B.C. The Se5a is a 7/8 replica according to the owner. The information on the props was a little small for my eyes! I’ll have a few more pictures to post from my side of the world later today or tomorrow.

    Ciao!
