RE: Electional surprise in France
i blame the french electoral system.
eveyone in france “knew” (:D 😀 :D) that jospin and chirac would go to round 2 so enough people stay at home or have a protest vote.
they showed on the news a french socalisist and her thought about why they hadn’t made it and she was living in cloud cookooo land !!! – french politicans are not acountable, and alwayys survive so the voter never feels they cna get rid of them
another problem is the divsion of the specrtrum – in the uk we have 3 broad parties which in french system would relaly be 5 small parties plus bigger smaller parties. in the uk the whole idea of coalitions are scarry, wierd, and worrying but on the conitnet they are the norm. coalitions mean that the public always get the same people in power and don’t ahve any real hard policies implemented.
quite simply thtere are 5 left wing parties in france occupying roughly 40% adn ??? right wing ocuupying 60% – this is static on 95 but wiht lower turnout. frnace needs broader parties so the 1st rounfd would be wiredos and the two main parties and thats it (like us elections)
BUT we all know that chirac will win so this huge liberal and socalist upror is ironicallly funny as it really thier own fault.
