How about Liberators too maybe?
I have been googling and found that C46 Commandoes were used. Crossing the ‘hump’ was nicknamed “Operation Vomit” by aircrews,
I was thinking that other than Dakotas, there would probably have been Curtis Commandoes too, which are not that common now. And possibly some British types? How about transport Stirlings or Yorks? Any chance they may have been used over the the trail?
Thanks Cees,
A great link. It looks good.
Personally I have no problem with YAM wanting to do their best to recreate the bomber. It is great to think veterans can take their children and grandchildren there and give them some idea of the type of plane they once flew. In the same way of the various recreated Lancaster and Stirling cockpits that have been seen on this forum, and the Defiant replica, Vimy replica, many of Shuttleworth’s and Omaka’s types, etc.
Yes, but it was the FILM that was the spoof and had nothing to do with the book. I was simply saying that the book has been filmed before too, that’s all.

See details of the original Casino Royale here

I note the director of the new film is another Kiwi, Martin Campbell, following on from Lee Tamahori with ‘Die Another Day’.

In this film,if I remember correctly,Sir James Bond comes out of retierment to take on S.M.E.R.S.H. Don`t you think that Ewan MacGregor is a little young to play this part,or are they only using the title Casino Royale and totally changing the story
The original, staring David Niven was a load of “Poo-Doo” A right mess. The only thing I can see MacGregor bringing to the roll of J.B.is the accent. The best Bond ever was Connery 😎 with Brosnan a very close second 🙂
I reckon this is another “Hollywood run out of ideas” films.
Er, the film you’re thinking of “used the title and changed the story”. That was a total nonsense film, a spoof of the Bond films that had little to do with the book and nothing to do with the official film series.
The real story is a normal (not old, not retired, not Sir) James Bond who has to outwit his baddie opponent at gambling in a casino whilst tryong to avoid being killed.
The book has been filmed once – for US TV starring Barry Nelson – who was the first James Bond actor – and the great Peter Lorre and the baddy boss! It was of course Americanised, but not too bad!

I popped into McDonalds the other day in Hamilton East, the first time I’ve been to one in ages. I looked at the menu board, and there wasn’t a burger in sight. It’s all filled rolls and deli rolls now!
I actually asked the chap behind the counter “Do you still make burgers?”, and was surprised to find they do, as their menu board did not reflect this at all. This new supposed health kick they’re on will surely put them out of business. Branches have already closed down in Hamilton.
If I wanted a filled roll I’d go to a bakery and pay half the price. McDonalds was built on making expensive crappy burgers and fatty fries, that’s why people go there. Why change a winning formula, just because they make kids who eat there too often fat? Still, if they do go completely bust I won’t be too unhappy.

Don’t you just love the world media?
Looking at headlines about this, some major overseas newspapers are working the words Terror Alert into the headlines and leaders. OK, so this incident which was sparked by a domestic dispute may have scared soe people,, but it needn’t be linked to terrorism when this has firmly been established as not the case.
Worst of all, Al Jazeera and NBC are saying the plane was “hijacked” – there’s a big difference between stealing a plane and hijacking it. Cor dear. It seems in the media today it’s not proper news unless it’s hyped up overblown news.

I think your suspicion is right – it was dark, crashed in the sea and would have had a New Zealand ZK- serial I think, so I don’t think the photo matches the story. Thanks for the link though.
