    The recreated Plonky emblem was painted by Sgt Trevor Platt, who was an aircraft technician with NATTS at the time. He later became the Wigram base artist. I had this photo published in New Zealand Wings magazine in April 1993.

    This was the emblem worn on the personal Avenger of 30 Sqn RNZAF pilot Fredd Ladd. He was to become a very well known aviator and writer after the war. Plonky, for him, symbolised a beer barrel spilling its contents onto the Japs below, as he was a teetotaller at that time and despised the idea of alcohol. He saw the light later! The real Plonky, NZ2518, was later shot down after it was taken over by 31 Sqn.

    The paintwork for this aircraft by the way was extensively and meticulously researched. There was a team of historians involved, as well as us in the RNZAF. Every day there were interesting dicussions about roundel sizes, etc. We were lucky in having two more Avengers on the base to compare with, one in the museum, and one in 6 Hangar very near by to this one. The latter is now in Gisborne
