I do not know the ultimate cause of accident
It was engine failure, a loss of power, then it regained revs, and then lost power again and ultimately quit.

That statement about being broken up at Rongotai is nonsense. The aircraft lay in the water for two days while they tried to work out a salvage plan. In the end the salvage crew recovered the engine, propeller, instrument panel, two exhausts, undercaiage, the tailskid, the starting handle and two voltage regulator boxes. The rest was saltwater damaged so the salvage team cut the rest into pieces and stacked it all behind local Barney Tosswell’s house. It was decided not to burn the wreckage in the usual way due to the risk from dry grass in the area possibly catching alight and causing further problems. So thankfully the dry grass saved this wreck.
From all the documentation I have looked at I don’t think they ever established what caused the engine to suddenly lose power and quit like that.

Dave HomewoodSorry Tony but I don’t even know who this Charllie Hunt fellow is, I assumed he was some newcomer to the forum and looking at his profile it confirms he has been here for a mere two months. I assume he was a frequenter of one of the other boards outside of Historic as I haven’t seen much activity from him.
The other two are longstanding members who I have a lot of respect for, so I like others will miss them much more than this other chap who I do not know.

Absolutely. The AB’s have not had a lot of competition till now. Some of the games this year have been walk overs as the oposition has been pretty slim.

When better to lose than at the very end of a massive season where they are all shattered; at the end of an unbeaten run that other teams can simply dream of, and when they are all suffering from a virus thanks to a lot of foreign travel? It had to happen, no shame in it. It’s only a game, after all.
I never even watched the game, nor any on this northern tour, as it was all played in the middle of the night and I don’t have Sky TV so I couldn’t get up at 3.00am to watch it.
John Green’s description of me here is a bit rich, I’m not spitting tacks nor eating my heart out. He thinks this for soem reason because he was making all sorts of outlandish anti-NZ comments around the time of the World Cup last year – a time when New Zealanders were experiencing a real exhiloration and national feeling of togetherness thanks to our pride in not just the team but the country putting on such an amazing tournament. Kiwis sadly seldom get to be so prominent on the World Stage. It was a fantastic few weeks where everyone was happy, even the non-rugby fans. Towns across the country adopted national teams and everyone flew flags from their homes and cars and the likes. We don’t usually get into such sporting fervour as a nation, unlike the Brits with their soccer teams, etc. It was something different for us, something great, a one-off, and now many people look back on it as a wonderful time in our nation’s history. Whether we won or lost the cup wouldn’t have dented the great spirit of the event, but winning was a wonderful bonus to cap it all off. No miserable whingers from abroad could knock our national spirit, but they tried of course.
John Green was one of them, he was simply being a complete prick at the time and I was one of several kiws who stood up against his ridiculous, jealous bullying of New Zealand, that’s all. Why should I be blamed for that?
Well done to the England rugby team, they have obviously sorted themselves out after being a complete drunken shambles last season.

Dave HomewoodI showed this thread and the pprune one to my mate Jim Mungall, who’s a real expert in Vildebeest and Vincent history. He sent the following reply, which he said I can post here on his behalf:
“Interesting Vildebeest. They are wrong whoever said the ‘initial’ Vildebeests had the 3 blade prop. The 3 blade came later on the Mk.4. the last in the series.
An interesting possibility is that a Mk.4 prop could have been fitted to a Pegasus engine as in the Mk.3. The Rotol prop on the Mk.4 was fitted with ground adjustable pitch and as such had no hydraulic pitch change mechanism. Now I do not know if the prop shaft on the Perseus was the same as that on the Pegasus as we do not have an engine to compare. But both engines were made by the same company (Bristol).
I do know however that the spinner on the prop in the photo was not on any Mk.4.in NZ.
The prop however looks remarkably like the 3 blade fixed pitch Fairey-Reed propeller on the Fairey Swordfish including the spinner. The Swordfish also had a Bristol Pegasus engine and probably the same propshaft as the Pegasus on the Vildebeest. All speculation but distinctly a possibility.”

Dave HomewoodHave you seen any mention of Colin Norman Gardner in the ORB? He’s a kiwi who flew with the squadron, he was in Singapore from about 1938 (having previously been on HMS Furious flying Swordfish) and flew with the squadron in combat against the Japanese in the Vildes, but I don’t know when he joined No. 100 Squadron before the war or if he was still with an FAA unit there. Colin was one of the survivors of the Endau Raid. I met him about a year ago, sadly his memory was not so great and he didn’t have his logbook any more either.

Dave HomewoodWell done on the detective work there Paul. I guess there’s no chance that the maintenance documents for K2929 will still exist? It would be very interesting to learn more about this modification.
If an aircrfat in Singapore was field modified like that would notification of why, how, when and all that have been sent off to Britian? Or would it have been kept inhouse? I’m guessing most of No. 100 Squadron’s records may have been lost when the Japanese invaded? Or did they get them out ok?
