What is your definition of “putty” ?

I checked out on google but no definition fit in the context

PuTTY is a free and open source terminal emulator application which can act as a client for the SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw TCP computing protocols and as a …

Putty is a gap filler, the stuff that hold in windows in wooden frames or to fill ill fitting panels to make them weather proof.

In 2004 it was £11,000 per flight hour.

    Source from a parliamentary question.

They quoted £2.2m per annum per Eurofighter, each eurofighter does approx 200 hours per year.

    6000 hour airframe life = 30 years = 200 hours per annum

    Eurofighter maintenance:
Maintenance costs <25% of life cycle costs (not very helpful – whats the life cycle cost).
Eurofighter is contractually obliged to achieve none maintenance man hours per flight hour (half Tornado, one hour more than Hawk T1)
50 defects repairable in one hour, 95% in three hours. Engine change in 45 minutes by four crew.

If you watch the you tube videos of the speakers at Aeroindia 2009 you can get some good info, the Indian competition looks a lot like the German airforces ex commanders lecture about TCO, and the Typhoon was quoted as having a contracted figure of less than 400 faults per 1000 flight hour. its achieving ~280 (in 2009) and they expect it to go down to ~220 ish

The reason why the Typhoon E scan radar will have a much wider Field or regard than the competition, i.e. that means greatly increased range at the margins.

    Look at the swashplate design

I agree, however Dassault may feel they have a better product, so I suppose they may have decided to cut price only just to still come out cheaper than the Eurofighter. Why would they do any more effort if they don’t have to?
Well or they could come up with a better offset package that counters the price advantage of the Rafale. The less difference in price, the more an offset advantage is going to tilt the balance.

    Nic

There are two reports of who is the lowest Unit price, the first reports were Typhoon marginally more expensive than Rafale, the second was Typhoon had quoted a lower unit flyaway cost.

But the second came with an unnamed well placed sources saying

EADS, which is promoting the more advanced and thereby more expensive aircraft is said to have quoted a lower price “unit flyaway cost.”

This comes as a contradiction to all the assessments made in the past that Eurofighter is costly and that India might not purchase it due to cost pressures,” a source said.

    All unnamed of course…:)

    Named source quoted as saying

MoD spokesperson Sitanshu Kar, without confirming anything said: “…This is just the unit cost, there is more work left before one could rejoice or feel otherwise. We have some of our best personnel looking into the matter and the L-1 could be announced in another six to eight weeks.”

i remember talking to Mr Jwcook when he harboured serious hopes that Typhoon would one day fly for the RAAF.

He soldiers manfully on though, and is an inspiration to us all:D

In 2002 I thought it was quite a logical choice, but was rejected by the government for a paper plane (JSF), one of the reasons was the Typhoon wouldn’t be ready in 2012, and was more expensive than the cheap $30m JSF.

So they went with the JSF:confused: now we have had to buy 24 SH to tide us over and possibly another 24 soon. LOL

You couldn’t make it up really!!

You’re dreaming ; HAL admits it will take time before India will be able to manufacture a Rafale or a Typhoon… And i find them extremely optimistic, a touch of magic wand ? no , being able to manufacture entirely a modern combat aircraft (we’re not talking of Mig 21 …) requires huge investments in industry and technology. It took decades to France to achieve such a result.

The reason the Saudi manufacturing plant is delayed is they just can’t attract local Saudi staff.

The actual infrastructure/plant isn’t too difficult to chuck together. (apologies to those actually tasked with it as they would disagree:D) the staff and experience is the real problem.

    Thanks for those images, Jwcook.

I can’t help but think that the RAF chappie is saying to the RAAF chappie: “This is what you could have, mate!”

    Shame…

LOL I thought the same thing…

Someone should caption the Aussie saying ” Oh 8ugger!!”:D I’m sure I saw wet tear stains on his flight suit LOL.

(apparently B_u_g_g_e_r is a swear word!! oh ******)

    Correct.
and then i can use the favorite typhoon fan argument : Rafale is more expensive per kilos because it is better. :p

I prefer to think its more expensive per kilo because it rarer and hand made:)

There’s lots of people getting their knickers in a twist over this competition, I’m finding it hugely entertaining, everyone should just take it easy.;)

A big thank you to India for organising the best competition in years and
Good luck or Bonne Chance to all.

    cheers

The three industrial partners in the Eurofighter program would therefore have made great efforts on the price of the unit to stay competitive with the Rafale

So now we can see clearer why the unit price was so close to the rafale in the indian bid ! It seems that Dassault is playing it smart and doesn’t feel the need to diminish its margins to win the deal !:)

Because they can’t count?? 😀 three industrial partners??

Eads, Eads Casa, Alenia, BAE Systems, MTU, Rolls Royce, ITP.

Australia finally gets a look at the Typhoon..

There are two Typhoons on deployment to Malaysia at the moment. the pictures are here:-

    http://images.airforce.gov.au/fotoweb/Grid.fwx?archiveId=5000&search=%28IPTC105%20contains%28Bersama%20Lima%202011%29%29

If you look at the last picture on page 4 with the RAAF chappie in the cockpit, download it it shows the emergency flight instruments panel open its first time I’ve seen that.

Its the panel on the far right of the cockpit next the the right MFD it has a couple of analogue type dials in it.

    Cheers

There exist a relation between weight & cost, and EF weigh more

So it weighs 10% more and is <5% more expensive, so its cheaper per Kilo!!

    Silly question, but nontheless:

Why is the Typhoon more expensive than the Rafale (even if by a little) given the much larger production numbers and total order book?

Build quality?? capability?? take your pick

Or it could just be decided by brides once again.

It’s not because that officials claim out loud that they are not going to let bribes play a role that it won’t happen behind the curtains.

    Nic

No I can’t believe the French would stoop so low.. they are a proud nation and that sort of behaviour is beneath them..:)

Offering their poor sweet BRIDES with wads of cash??? or Big burly Brides with teeth missing and tattoos that will kick your teeth in?
