The UK are active at Woomera in Australia UAV’s seem to be the next big thing.

The reason for project such as Replica are to show other powers that you could go it alone and develop a solution so eroding their perception that you will have a “take it or leave it” situation where they hold all secrets and technology.

(IMHO it was the USA and the JSF that was the target in this case)

    Politics?.
IMHO The Replica/NightJar program the UK undertook would have remained secret but for the pressure the UK wanted to exert on the US who was withholding stealth technology.

    Re the Eurofighter communications:-

When I was talking to the Comms manager for Eurofighter he expressed jealousy of our ability to publish details of the Typhoon on our website, he was very constrained by the national security concerns of four partner nations, and getting clearance to say anything is an absolute nightmare.

The Rafale by contrast has a much simpler route to navigate;).

Having said that when they are stung by any valid criticism Eurofighter GmbH will respond (but usually about 3 weeks later!!) :).

RAF personnel are now very tightly controlled about what they can say, even in “No Quote” briefings, I suspect that the French may also have some restrictions but don’t know at what level.

Just thought I’d give some background info into the Communications problems.

I find the definitions of ‘far left’ used by some USians rather baffling. They imply a very skewed distribution. I suspect that perhaps 10% of the world is not ‘far left’, according to you. Has it ever occurred to you that the centre may not be where you are?

LOL I was under the impression that The US was centre of everything…they have repeatedly told me so..:D

    Very astute observation there swerve.

And who are the mysterious six who sway world opinion of the world and the US defence behemoth???

But there is the cost factor.

Preble cited a Washington Post article that stated that the cost of flying an F-22 is about $40,000 per hour.

So using the F-22 for a mission that other aircraft could handle, Ben-Ari said, “would be in the same manner as a Lamborghini used to bring your kids to school. You could do it, but do you really need to?”

Maj. Clay Bartels, F-22 requirements officer for Air Force headquarters at the Pentagon, said he believes the F-22 could take on ground-support missions today if called upon. But he said its primary role — ensuring U.S. superiority in the skies — isn’t needed in today’s wars.

    or NavAir

    http://www.dodbuzz.com/2010/01/12/navair-offers-f-18-ammo-amid-jsf-woes/

Cost per flight hour of the combined F-18A-D and AV-8 fleets is estimated to be about $19,000 per hour; F-35B/C cost per flight hour is estimated to be about $31,000,” the source said. “These higher and growing operating costs are certainly typical for a new generation aircraft, but the revelation of these estimates at this relatively early point in the program would seem to demonstrate some real and growing concern that the highly complex F-35 is anything but ‘affordable.’”

And it was all going so well this morning.. according to some.

Theres some useful figures in the links..

“There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know.”

In totally unrelated news to the JSF program the UK will cut its harrier squadrons with some redundancies expected.
There are three RAF squadrons and two Navy , one will defiantly go with another possible ~40%, cuts and the UK Ministry of Defence is at least £6 billion short of the amount needed to fund its 10-year equipment program.

So what’s the effect on future UK JSF purchases considering the JSF is what replaces the Harrier in the UK coupled with the ministry’s funding difficulty?..

Well none at all! if you truly really believe and have faith that the full allocation will be bought despite not having squadrons to fly them or indeed any pilots… I see at least two squadrons of flying pigs coming right up!!

And how is the US tracking financially? 🙂 lets just say that unlimited spending isn’t their first priority.

So to recap – FEWER ORDERS, LATER DELIVERY, MORE DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED, MORE COSTS, and still not a fraction into testing!!!

Wow would someone please let me know when the bad news arrives!!!.:) or am I missing any tiny clues to a program in trouble (Death spiral)?

I fully expect some rosy reply.. what will it be? a Burbage type “we have it all in hand this time, so please ignore the last four c0ckups!” or a more mosaic approach were unquantifiable unrelated factoids are strung together to give a somewhat rosy impression? I’m quivering with anticipation.

It makes me think of the captain of a ship hit by a torpedo in mid Atlantic in 1943 asking his first mate where the nearest land was and the reply that they were only 2 miles from solid ground (unfortunately that the solid ground was 2 miles straight down), Hmmmm your not related to the first mate are you PFCEM?:D

are you trolling ? no the f-35 didnt fly in 2005, it flew in 2006

And has every single development milestone since then been extended?.

Is it 1/3 the price of an F-22:eek:

The JSF is in quite a bit of trouble, it gets very wearisome to keep hearing LM’s rosy outlook taken as gospel and repeated ad nauseam despite the facts. Look at LM share price drop, the big money is not confident, do you wonder why that is?

If the leaked delays are confirmed it does have an impact on costs and the in service dates which are supposed to be only ~18 months away and they can’t fly powerpoint presentations.

I guess if you believe the LM’s test schedule you’ll believe LM’s price estimates, that was the point I was trying to make and mentioning LM’s past record as ‘proof’ its all going well is frankly ridiculous!.

There are other estimates of LM current JSF performance the JET report is one, the truth lies somewhere in between LM and JET, but my money and the big money is tilted far towards the JET report end.

My bet is there is some big JSF changes in the pipeline, so hold on, strap yourself in and enjoy the show.

And just what is that supposed to show?

It sure DOES NOT show that the program is having anywhere near as much problems as some want you to believe.

I am not giving any estimations about anything related to prices, THE PEOPLE DEVELOPING & BUILDING THE AIRCRAFT ARE! And unlike people pulling crap out of their rear end, THE PEOPLE DEVELOPING & BUILDING THE AIRCRAFT have the actual data AND HAVE DEVELOPED & BUILT AIRFRAFT BEFORE.

And with LRIP contracts coming in BELOW projections shows that their cost projections ARE NOT OUT OF WHACK & if anything a bit high.

    2002 quote –

For Burbage and the JSF team, nothing is more sacred than a deadline. “If you can’t control your schedule, the implication is that you can’t control costs,” he says. “And if you can’t control costs, you won’t keep the services interested in funding your program.”

The critical deadline facing the JSF team is October 2005, when the Air Force expects to fly its JSF aircraft. To nail that date, the team must harness a program that encompasses 75% of the world’s fighter-development industrial base.

Either there having more problems than you can believe or there is some kind of time warp/alternate reality issues interfering with LM’s excellent track record such as the on time and on budget F-22 which has been flying 750 aircraft for the past decade:confused:

    Someone is avoiding the issues.

But LM didn’t change the definition of SC to M1.78 or higher though.

I agree that LM have not stated that supercruise is defined as M1.78. just the leaked SC figures for the F-22 kept creeping higher when others got near the previous figure. Just a coincidence I guess.

Merry Xmas… I’m off for a beer or two

Could you post the years LM changed the definition of supercruise, and what those corresponding definitions were?

As for beer, if we’re sticking with products like Budweiser, etc… then I’m in agreement with you. If all microbrews are included, then I’d have to beg to differ.

Agree Micro breweries aside ;-), May I also add that Budwweiser has been described as like making love in a punt. – fecking near water…:D

The ATF definition and airforce were using >M1 from concept
See USAF in 1991 Smoking gun

Around 1996/8 LM started to use M1.5 and that figure crept in, un fortunatly I can’t give you an exact date, with even a later comment why M1.5 was stated was because no one else could do it.

But when Eurofighter started creeping up the supercruise speed ladder – So did the F-22 ~M1.78.

You can see from the previous links I have posted that the figure has clearly changed, you can make your own mind up about motives etc.

    Cheers
