    Russia
Russia to finalize plans for new aircraft carrier by 2012
    15:57 | 28/ 04/ 2009

    Print version

ISTANBUL, April 28 (RIA Novosti) – Russia will finish drafting plans for a new aircraft carrier for its Navy by 2012, a deputy defense minister for procurements said on Tuesday.

“We are planning to resolve all the issues in 2010-2011, and after that we will make a final decision. At this point it is necessary to determine all technical specifications of the ship and the means of achieving them. Simultaneously, we have to decide on the strategic uses of aircraft carriers in the future,” Vladimir Popovkin said.

So far the Russian Navy only has one aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, built in 1985, with a displacement of 55,000 metric tons, a crew of 1,500, and capability to carry more than 50 aircraft.

Vice Adm. Anatoly Shlemov, the head of defense contracts at the United Shipbuilding Corporation, said in February that Russia’s new-generation aircraft carrier would most likely be nuclear-powered, and have a displacement of up to 60,000 metric tons.

He added that the new carrier would serve as a seaborne platform for new-generation fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft, in particular a fifth-generation fighter set to replace the Su-33 multirole fighter aircraft currently in service, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

Shlemov said that unlike in the past, the new aircraft carrier would not be armed with cruise missiles, which were not part of its “job description.”

He also said that at least three such carriers were to be built, for the Northern and Pacific Fleets.

Shlemov offered no timeline on the project, saying it was not as yet clear which shipyard would get the contract.

The new carrier has an estimated price tag of $4 billion.

Have you ever been in US? Economic targets are spread around the country…

LOL! Right, have you ever seen the Russian nuclear arsenal? There’s plenty of arsekicking! 😉

With MIRVs, gets even easier. Once the major cities are reduced to rubble, the US will crumble.

That strategy will work just as well against the US.

In fact, the US has much more to lose, and there’ plenty of nukes to go around.

Unfortunately that speech sorta makes sense, contrary to what forum geniuses may think.

Why break what worked for 50 years? *cough MAD cough*

For the real threats, there’s the FBI . . .

    (and CIA, Homeland, NSA)

No terrorists are going to be bringing in nuclear armed FROGs or Iskanders (LOL!?)

Ok 6 Yassen SSGN seems to be on the way

RF to build 6 nuclear subs with long-range cruise missiles

MOSCOW, March 27 (Itar-Tass) — Russia will build at least six multipurpose nuclear-powered submarines with long-range cruise missiles for the Navy, a source in the Russian Defence Ministry told Itar-Tass on Friday.

“The Sevmash shipyard is building several models of the leading underwater cruiser Severodvinsk. It is planned to build at least six nuclear-powered submarines,” the source said.

“Under the current plans the Severodvinsk will be put into service for the Navy in 2011, other serial submarines should be built by 2017,” the source said.

The nuclear submarine Severodvinsk will be equipped with long-range cruise missiles that can potentially carry low-capacity tactical warheads.

“These supersonic highly manoeuvring missiles are designed for strikes on aircraft carriers of the enemy if the latter poses a direct threat to Russia’s security. The missiles can be launched at the most important coastal facilities,” the source said.

“Despite the construction of a new nuclear submarine with new missiles Russia intends to observe firmly international arms control agreements on equal terms with other countries,” the source said.

Russia will finance the construction of a new multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine with long-range cruise missiles, First Deputy Chief of the Navy’s General Staff, Vice-Admiral Oleg Burtsev told Itar-Tass on March 20. “The construction of a new multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine that will be equipped with long-range cruise missiles was financed. We are planning to put this submarine into service in 2011,” the vice-admiral said.

I told you they would build more than 2 of them. . .

Well duh, thats because the project 11540 program started in 1986. First of class Neustrashimy commissioned 1993. The second hull (Yaroslav Mudry) dates from 1990. It took 19 to finally complete. So while the latest frigate built, its an old design (from before 1986). Which don’t mean there’s nothing new on the drawing board….

    The Neustrashimiy series are fillers.

Admiral Sergei Gorshkov class frigates will be numerous and very well armed.

Maybe in the future. Construction on Yasen has been going on for a decade, long before kh 101/102 design was started. I am questioning the entire Yasen project, construction has been going on so long all the technology for this project is outdated before she ever gets out to sea. I realy do not understand the russian navy priorities. How many times has this project been delayed? I think she was first reported to be delievered in 2000, that is 9 years ago! I am sure this will be a single unit project, they should start construct a smaller SSN to replace the aging Akula/Sierra class. No more news about the 6000T SSN?

She is the same age as Seawolf. Which is more than most navies can hope to compete against.

Assuming Austin is right about the redesign, the Yasen may well be more capable on some parameters.

Kh 101/102 should be available for use with the Yasen.

Hardly effective to have a AirWing of half Air Superiority Fighters and half Strike Fighters. The USN did at one point and found it to be far less adaptable……….and they had much larger AirWings to boot!

That would be a expensive mix and Russia can hardly afford two different types on its lone Carrier……………

    LOL!?

American can’t afford F-35s, you are confused.
