This is a great thread!
Like many,my Dad made my first kits which I promptly destroyed “landing” them on the living room carpet!
My first kit was a Spit,of course, followed every Saturday by another from the Airfix range.BTW,buy the Airfix book-I’ve spent hours gazing at the pictures and reminising.
As an Air Cadet I became aware of Hasegawa and Tamiya and from then, the mysteries of filling, sanding and-the ultimate-airbrushing!! oo-er 😀
From then the pilgramige was to Les Littles model shop-nirvana! (where are you now,Les?)
Now old and farty I collect the Corgi models, but my wife still thinks I’m a ten year old in a thirty-nine year old body……not far wrong!
Thanks for all the great posts on this thread.
not too clear on “copy and paste”
Thanks Gerry,
Although I can’t stand Enterprise-too many re-hashed stories-I’ll look out for this one.
Don’t go to see this if you would get upset with seeing a P-40 lookalike firing small harpoons (can’t spell pitons) out of it’s wings to get around corners;or retracting its props before diving underwater;or after going into the briney-using twin props that pop out of it’s rear fuselage!! 😮
Apart from that the movie is great fun,the producers have tried to get a period feel to it,and you get to see Gwyneth Paltrows stocking-tops three times-yes,I counted…… 😀
 I agree with you, planejunky, why does the F3 have ASRAAMs and Skyflash? Where are the AMRAAMs?
Yes,I remember the programme,it was on during the long summer break. If I remember correctly, wasn’t there a T-33,painted black, that acted as the “bandit” to the heroes Mirage 3’s? I also still have the Aeronauts Annual from 1973.
Apparently there was another series in the eighties and there’s a new movie planned for next year in which they fly Mirage 2000’s !
Thanks Whalebone, your posts were both fascinating and sobering. We will remember.
Good point, over here in Canada there were dozens of flags on cars during Euro 2004,with all of the ex-pats showing their heritage.Funny how the Portuguese came out of the woodwork, followed by the Greeks……
A fellow brit on my street had a St.George flag on his car then-distinct lack of Union Flag there now!!
Rafale,I’ve just moved to Canada from the UK,which is where I saw the 70’s series!
I remember a TV series as a boy called “The Aeronauts” about Tanguy and Laverdue, they flew Mirage 3’s and I believe the bad guys flew black T-33″s,can’t wait to see what the heroes are going to fly in the new version-Rafales?!
Superb pictures,thanks for posting.
Does anyone know why the XV sqn Tornadoo is in hi-viz markings? Some kind of anniversary?
Another unit using Beau’s in the Far East was 177Sqn,my father-in-law’s Dad was a groundcrew “erK’
A couple of comments that made me smile:
Heard in one of the huts at East Kirkby, looking at the Wellington artefacts:
“Oh yes,son,this was designed by the bloke that done the bouncing bomb,T E Lawrence”……….and;
In the AAM at DX stood near the SR71,an “expert” was describing how a yank pilot called Gary Sobers was shot down in this over Cuba in 1963 😀
Thanks for the info
