No one is ‘bashing’

There are certain realities in aircraft preservation and if myself and others point these out perhaps it might be worthwhile just taking note?

I am sure we all wish the group and ‘their’ aircraft well.

Moggy

In that case I would like to invite you to join the cause (and anyone else), I can be reached at membership@morayvia.org.uk

The group are very keen to get anyone on board who wants to help

Is there no chance of keeping her in a hangar and will she stay at Kinloss??

Peter

As was specified in our press release the cost of keeping in a hangar is prohibitive to Morayvia and with Kinloss going through a transfer process (RAF to Army) we want to ensure that we dont rock any boats.

But she will remain at Kinloss, and when she is in her new location she will be easily viewable.

Only the two prototype Nimrods (XV147 & 148) were ex Comets, all the rest were new build aircraft, and were “Based” on the Comet 4c but with the fuselage shortened both ahead and behind the wings.

Thats why the fin had the forward strake to increase its overall surface area, this counterated the Nimrod’s natural desire to Dutch roll (wing rocking) because of the shortened fuselage.

The probe was angled down by about 10 degrees (might have been a bit less) because the Nimrod,s natural flying angle was about the same up, thus when it was tanking the Probe was relatively level.

hope this helps

What is the status of XV244? Is it’s future secure?

XV244 is still at Kinloss and is complete, but it wouldnt be wise to speculate on its future at present, I am aware of lots of work going on in the background, so lets all hope for a positive announcement in the New Year

I take it that’s from the wreckage of the Toronto Airshow tragedy?

It is indeed the aircraft was XV239

Gents

I wonder what the future holds for the Hunter F-2 (WN904) which guards the gate at Waterbeach Cambs, after the recent announcement that the former RAF base is to close soon.
I seam to remember the jet was loaned to the base by the IWM, so I hope they reclaim the jet and give it a good home.

Freebird

Its got a good home at Waterbeach, but I suspect 39RE will take it north to Kinloss when they move north next year

Thanks guys, I didnt want to go down the RAFM route if someone out here had the info, first it would be much quicker to get it and dont the RAFM now charge you for that info.

I know that the RAF F700 will contain certain information (but it wont contain all the info espescially its early data) , but I think the F700,s for these two aircraft (certainly XV240) will have probably been archived or even destroyed by Eng Records at Kinloss by now.

Thanks for the update on the book, I may have mistaken it for another book then because I,m sure I,ve seen a book with histories of each aircraft.
The sort of data I,m after is a s follows
Delivery dates to the RAF
Transfer between units
Conversion to MR2
Any help is much appreciated

Shame about that very nice 92 Sqn Phantom, I assume it was the one on display at St Athan, in reality it was XV500 but for some reason dispalyed as XV498

Apologies:o
Great to see this cockpit section preserved, how complete is the flight deck?
Is Spey Bay a place or the Spey bay at Kinloss, seems a bit of a coincidence?

Shame something like a Nimrod cockpit didn’t make its way down to St Mawgan in Cornwall to commemorate the types’ important association with that airfield.

As far as am aware the cockpit is complete but the back end is pretty much gutted up to the Nav Stations, the plan will be to use it for disabled visitors,

Edit…Spey Bay is a place about 25 miles from Kinloss

Guys, if you want to talk about “Tailplanes” please start your own thread, this one is about a NIMROD FUSELAGE and I would like it to remain so

I was visiting Norwich at the end of September and was pleased to see that “612” is having some work done to her, although corrosion is very evident on the flying control surfaces, the fuselage and wings are undergoing a repaint.

I once had the pleasure of flying with John Cruikshank VC (in a Nimrod I might add) we went from Kinloss to Keflavik. John is the most pleasant person in the world and doesnt like a fuss, so you can imagine what happened at Kef when we landed and every man and his dog was there to greet him.

On our way home I think he spent most of the time up front, long time ago though.
