Wow
Well there’s no doubting what will be the centre of attention at Legends, I just hope they consider pulling her out onto the grass
Last image of XV241 as a relatively complete airframe, 2 days later she was no more (save the front fuselage)

Fear not , Nimrod XV240 is still on display (not quite guarding the gate) I should hope its got a few years life left as yet, as Kinloss is not due to shut completely until 2013
and here is your Shackleton T4 WB847 (ex of MOTU)

You are correct in that it was to be put on the gate, but when there was a change in Base Commanders the new one stopped it and it ended its days on the fire dump. This image was taken in June 1983
This was XV247 dismantled for the AN124 transportation as part of the MRA4 build (she eventually became Nimrod MRA4 ZJ516 PA1)

XV241 post GW2 (Palm trees are missions symbols)
And she also carried 206 Sqn,s 90th Anniversary tail as well
I understand thats because they’re going to get an R1 instead.
Duxford was one of the first museums to be offered a Nimrod MR2 but turned it down in favour of getting another VC-10, then when they were offered an R1 they changed their minds.
They were being offered a Nimrod with both Falklands and Gulf War usage, I for one found it very strange that the Imperial War Museum would refuse a combat veteran as such.
XV241 was scrapped at Kinloss earlier this week, that leaves just the following to meet their fate
XV235, XV244 & XV252,
My last shot of XV241
In the original disposal by air plan a Nimrod was to be flown into Cosford, the runway and stopping distance were marginal, but the crew were happy that they would get it stopped. In fact I know they actually practised it on at least two occasions when delivering other frames into museums. The final decision to allow it to land at Cosford was made by a higher authority and they refused permission on the grounds of safety I gather. What I cant fathom out though is why they didnt fly one into Shawbury because Cosford was allways on the list to get a Nimrod MR2. Moving it from there to Cosford would be much easier and they have experience (Victor). Getting XV235 from Cosford by road from Kinloss isnt going to be easy at all, but the most difficult bit is the dismantling of the wings without causing damage to the fuselage as far as I am aware its never been done and the Redux Bonding will prove very hard to shift I reckon. I,m definately going to be in Nairn when they try to get the fuselage sections under the railway bridge because it will be a squeeze, and then up the ramp trying to get it onto the A9.
Good thing though is thats another one into a museum.
I may have posted these before, but the photos below are scans from my fathers slides. He took them while serving with 201 squadron… They’re all taken during the Falklands campaign appart from the last one which I think was taken at Anconbury.
The dayglow fish and arrestor hook are because they landed short and hit the water on their way into ascension island. Also the slogan “Have flaps will travel” – The destroyed the flaps on landing
Your first picture of XV228 is probably taken at RAF Stanley because its on matting by the look of it, and was taken sometime in late 1982 or early 1983. It was also taken after the conflict had finished. It may well have been the aircraft that took home the Defence Secretary in one flight (17hrs or so) back to Kinloss
It gets better
The Press & Journal, which is the daily paper for the North of Scotland are reporting this morning that BAe are being paid another £200 Million by the MoD to scrap them (thats on top of what they have been paid already, apparently its all in the get out clause).
In contrast the local community has so far received absolutely nothing from the MoD to offset the 2000 job losses with the impending closure of Kinloss.
Is it me…..
All references I have used this year for BoB 70th refer to 92 Sqn using the callsign GANNIC during the Battle
I was chatting about that particular airframe and its progress with the BoBMF groundcrew at RIAT this year, they have now moved away from just being able to work on it in effectively their spare time to a more planned regime which seems obvious in the pictures. They fully expect the aircraft to be ready for the circuit next year, but no doubt this year will take toll on all the other Sptifires and much maintenance will be required on those over the winter, which will put TE311 down the pecking order a bit.
Blooming great to see the images though, she looks a peach and is relatively not far off getting into the air. A low back MkIX, rare bird
Without a doubt he must improve the way staff interact with visitors, I last visited Hendon about 2 years ago and I was dismayed at the sheer lack of interest shown by museum staff to the general public. They need to be knowlegable on the display items in the museum and not just trying to sell you an expensive poor cup of tea.
Goto any museum in the USA, the staff are ready, willing and able to help with anything, most are ex service people (many are veterans) who have a passion and pride for their job and their charges and its not unusual for them to go out of their way to help. I doubt any of the public facing staff at the RAFM have a similar passion and I supect many have not even served, and go out of their way to help a visitor not a chance.
On more than one occasion when I have visited a museum in the USA I have spent many a minute chatting with staff, they just loved what they were doing and I,ve never come across one who didnt know his job.
I was very disappointed with the whole experience of the RAFM when compared say against the Imperial War Museum where I enjoyed the experience.
He should also make the archives more user friendly, get them on line for goodness sake, its ridiculous in the days of Freedom of Information that the RAFM have to charge an exorbitant fee to photocopy a piece of information and then send it in the post..thats if they can be bothered.
Great exhibits, iffy layout, but lousy front office staff
Good question !
I know like all the other organisations Norwich will look after her and should be applauded for taking on the challenge.
Well done Norwich
Stupid question: why is the other one grey?
Because they were all in the proess of being repainted to Grey when they were grounded
XV255 departed Kinloss at 13.45
