Phil, what are the little missiles on the bow and elsewhere?
Ja Worsley,
76 F-35A to replace the F.A-18A+’s, 24 more to replace the F-18F’s in the strike role in the early 2020’s.
If the emphasis is to make it survivable in a conventional war the i would go for this system, along with a stealthy ship and IR SAM like south african Yakhoont*
*Can’t remember name of it.
I think it is safe to say that unless something better comes out, it will have everything fitted to the ANZAC’s and more. Probably not an IR SAM unless RAM is purchased to replace Phalanx though.
As long as they land the helicopters the same way they land the harriers on the carriers I don’t think there would be any problems.
Aka. Match speed with the carrier besides the landing deck and then slide the helicopter across and over the deck.
Fairly sure one of our tankers is currently spending most of its time in the gulf, so that is not exactly true. Anyway, the purchase of the Sirius/Delos has already shown a trend towards a larger replenishment ship.
Anyone else notice the old Quantas logo?
:p
All RAN ships have the read Kangaroo on the funnel. 🙂
You can just see it on the photo below of HMAS ANZAC.

HMAS Westralia was replaced by HMAS Sirius. She’s a converted Double Hulled Tanker built in south korea. I’m fairly sure she’s an interim replacement only supposed to be in service for 10-15 years. So she’ll probably be replaced at the same time as Success.
I’d keep SM-2 or SM-6 in at least part of the forward VLS. If they get AUSPAR they can control them themselves, if they get CEAFAR they can be controlled by the hobarts via CEC.
Ring Up Incat and tell them you want an RO-RO catamaran capable of handling vehicles with the ground pressure, length and width of an M1A1 SEP MBT.
We built HMAS Success didn’t we? We also built all the Anzacs and the up coming Hobart class vessels, so we do have a decent ship building industry!
She was late, massively over budget, and that yard was closed soon after (now a museum).
Not sure what size ships the Yards in Newcastle, Melbourne and Adelaide can build, but the LHD’s are being built in Spain.
Two points.
Isnt the F-105 getting a TAS? and didn’t the RAN buy the rights to the Hobart/F-100 design when they selected it?
Fairly sure I heard that the RAN purchased the rights to use the design.
I Said 1930’s, not 1960’s and 70’s. :p
Yes. The F125 is a completely different class of ship. It’s more of a “colonial cruiser” than an FFG. No VLS, just RAM for self-defence. Capacity for 50 commandos & their equipment. Land attack weaponry (127mm with Vulcano, Harpoon to be replaced with a more land-attack capable weapon at some point). Long endurance. Assault boats. Lots of light (27mm & 12.7mm in RWS) guns. A couple of NH-90s. It’s a “stabilisation” ship, meant for supporting peacekeeping, anti-pirate ops, small-scale interventions – that sort of thing.
Ja Worsley – the Naval Technology site doesn’t have the latest specs. It’s got slightly bigger.
The Modern day counterpart to the county and leander classes of the 1930’s?
Might have something to do with announcements a while ago about problems with the Russian shipbuilding industry regarding building enough warships for the Russian Navy, perhaps this is just a short cut providing place holders for newer ships?
Probably more becausethe Kirov’s and Slava’s are the only ships in the Russian Navy Inventory with an Area Air Defense Capability, and the ships currently announced to be under construction do not have the ability to replace that capability.
I did a bit of checking up Kato, here are the official specs of the F-125 design
Full-Load Displacement 6,800tIt also is classed as an FFG (frigate)
Interestingly the FREMM is lighter at 5800t displacement.
Given these stats it would appear that the RAN are looking at a Destroyer (DDG) rather than a Frigate in terms of size to replace the Anzacs.
From memory F125 only has RAM for air defense and doesnt have a VLS. That probably rules it out right from the start.
