As mentioned before in the other thread, here is the F-100 WITHOUT the SPY-1 radar as proposed. This has all the standard equipment fit of the AWD, but would be tailored to meet the requirements of the RAN’s Future FFG
Switch that mast out with the new CEAFAR radar mount being refitted onto the ANZAC’s. Preferrably AUSPAR would be ready by then instead though.
If the CVA-01 project had not been cancelled, then a Navalised variant of Tornado would likely have been developed from the start as a replacement for the FAA’s Phantoms and Buccaneers as well as the RAF’s ones. Of course in this scenario, more Phantoms and Buccs would have been aquired in the first place as the RAF wouldn’t have the option of stealing the RNs ones, so the overall fleet of aircraft needing replacement would be larger as well. The CVAs were designed to operate 36 jets (18 Phantoms and 18 Buccs) plus four AEW and six ASW Helo (sound familiar? CVF!) so there would be a requirement for three air groups plus HQ/OCU sqn and attrition spares. So we are looking at a minimum buy of 80+ ADV(N) and 80+IDS(N). Had Tornado been designed from the outset for Naval operations, it would have been a better aircraft IMHO, as it would have been more rugged in construction as the Phantom and Buccaneer had been. On the other hand if you just fitted the Tornado avionics to the Phantom and Buccaneer airframes, you get a better aircraft then the Tornado anyway… and that’s the opinion of the pilots who flew them!
Apparently Typhoon was supposed to be the replacement for Phantom, with the Tornado F3 continuing in service. However with the end of the cold war, Phantom was retired and now we have typhoon replacing Tornado rather then Phantom.
An interesting proposition would be a Carrier capable Tornado IDS and ADV. Would it be Doable?

Do I get the 10 Points?
If possible could people possibly either post a low res version of the image here or just post a link, because those photos are all insanely large.
The Belfast had four Tynes, & had 50% more take-off weight than a contemporary C-130. A Transall carries 80% of the cargo of a C-130 (admittedly, over a shorter range) on just two Tynes. Why not just buy more Belfasts, if a more powerful, heavier-lift transport was wanted?
I asked a similar question on the Nav Weps board a couple of months back.
Hopefully AUSPAR will be ready by the time the ANZAC replacement is being constructed. Supposed to be much better then the current CEAFAR.
Steam Catapults could be ordered either from the UK (though the company hasnt built them since the 60’s) or the US. It would probably be possible to buy the designs for the UK steam catapults or one of the older US steam catapults.
I like the what I have seen of them but I would like to see some more details images. Any one know where I can find one?
Its a Scaled up Cavour fitted with an angled deck and Arresting wires.
That said, the US Navy doesn’t operate Carriers, but Supercarriers…
Just nitpicking, OK ? :p
Really, what is the difference between a Carrier and a Super carrier? The USN Operates carriers, they are larger then other carriers but they are still carriers.
As for the America class, The Queen Elizabeth class are probably a better prospect, already being configurable into either STOVL or CATOBAR format.
I can’t believe that the Ucranian designers/builders never thought out the “easy way” to get the engines inside the half-finished hull… It just seems a tad too stupid to close up the hull BEFORE inserting the engines into it. Who knows, they might even resort to installing electric drives/pods to simplify the process, what do you all think?

They probably closed up the ship when it was placed into storage. 😉
As for the island. Remember that Varyag does not, at this time at least, have any of the heavy anti-ship and anti-air weaponry installed upon her sister. Also remember that the original island was designed to have a phased array radar (never fitted). Take out the space needed for firecontrol equipment and other no longer required gear and you can probably get away with a much smaller island.
What is the “ground pressure” of an F-4 though? Can the deck even handle that much weight? 😉
Hiei wasnt a cruiser, she was a Kongo class Battlecruiser/Fast Battleship.
And now the question, will they move to the next battleship class? Aka. Nagato and Mutsu, or will they use an Aircraft Carrier name?
The Heaviest Aircraft Carried by Sao Paulo in French service were the ~13ton Super Etendard and the ~13t Super Frelon Helicopter. In Brazilian Service, as far as i can work out the largest aircraft to operate are both ~11.5t MTOW with the A4 and S2T.
Her Deck may not be reinforced enough to operate F4’s, even if she is theoretically big enough for them to land and take off. Plus remember the Two RN carriers used a modified F4 with bigger engines and a lower stall speed.
