The B-1B. As currently used over afghanistan flying from Diego Garcia.
Didn’t you read the OP? Under such austere conditions that capability cannot afford to exist.:D
Look at what the ADF has at the moment. Add about half again. Thats what you would be able to afford with 50% of your current budget.
I see lots of suggestions to bring back all British troops from Germany, but how much would this save? The bases and facilities there would have to be constructed in the UK, meaning that we would be faced with a huge bill against any (rental?) costs that we might be incurring currently.
Money that will be taken back out of the local economy in short order from the troops wages that they will spend that is currently going into the german economy.
Nope. They’re still talking about the ASCOD scout (40 ton!) version. We have to do something to replace the CVR(T), because the entire fleet is wearing out. I’m not convinced ASCOD, now, is the right solution. The development cost of this new ASCOD version will make it horribly expensive.
40 Ton?! Thats about four times the weight of a CVR(T) and just under 2/3 the weight of a Challenger…..on a vehicle thats supposed to be a scout!!
Very odd, since this is supposed to be part of a two year austerity plan, but it’s a cut in spending in about 5 years time.
What exactly is the current agreement regarding typhoon numbers? Compensation etc.
U.S., Israel close to deal on F-35 fighters
* Deal would cover 19 airplanes
* Decision due “any day”
The United States and Israel are days away from reaching an agreement on the sale of 19 Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) F-35 fighter jets, which would be the first foreign military sale of the new warplane.
“The ball is in their court,” Vice Admiral Jeffrey Wieringa, who heads the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency, told Reuters at the Farnborough Airshow.

Wouldn’t “first sale to a non partner nation” be more accurate?
So what replaces Sea Wolf?
CAMM is also the replacement for Sea Wolf.
FRES is pretty much already gone I thought.
T22 are already extended to 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 from memory. The Last of the T23’s will be 35 or 36 years old when replaced, from an original design life of 18 or 20 years IIRC (or was that T22?)
I thought most of the unused bases were already sold off, which is why 1st Armoured is still mostly in Germany.
Can’t retire Sea King until a replacement ASaC enters service and something is purchased for the Commando Helicopter Force.
————-
– I’d suggest that the Puma’s stay in service until the new chinooks arrive and those units convert to the Chinook.
– Order more Merlins to replace the Sea Kings in the Commando Helicopter force and as the ASaC force.
– Bring back 1st Armoured to the UK
– Get the RN Procurement into a proper cycle and FUND IT. Continual development and procurement, spread the money over time, don’t let skills degrade.
– ditto for the RAF. Always have something under development or being purchased.
– Ditch the Tanker PFI, even if it means the government has to buy the company out and transfer its assets to the RAF.
Ark Royal may well stay in service longer than expected as a 2nd LPH, maybe until 2025
I doubt it, unless Ocean is in much worse condition then Ark Royal, I very much doubt it.
From memory the CVF’s will rotate through the LPH role with Ocean (and LPH(R)) the same way that the Invincible class do.
In addition to the above, a large Corvette meeting the C3 requirement would appeal to many other navies and if jointly developed with France and Italy I am sure other NATO navies would join the programme as there is a need for such a vessel. For once we would be part of naval building programmes that have a chance at export sales.
Tried that already, and failed a few times.
With the cancellation of UK programmes the UK could replace its Rapier with another system
CAMM
and even purchase the land based version of Aster.
What for? Against what threat?
The Sea Skua replacement programme could continue as it has a unique niche and would be ideal for other nations as part of the overall programme
Agreed.
Thanks.
The problem with that is that it isn’t a definite statement about what Canada will pay. If you examine it carefully, all she actually said is “F-35A will be about $60 mn in today’s prices”.
It tallies with what the RAAF was expecting to pay last time I saw an article. It was about the same amount.
RAAF Purchases are a bit hard to work out unit cost though, as the ADF tend to quote full-through-life cost.
Highly doubtful either carrier will carry an airwing of 36, more likely rotating 36 aircraft for a wing of no more than a dozen. Which still gives the RN a bigger punch than they currently have and keeps naval air power alive in these times of austerity.
Yes, but if you want to be able to doploy that size force in an emergency, you need that many active airframes that are assigned to flying squadrons so that pilots can be assigned and kept current.
You can’t have 12 active airframes in a squadron, plus six in an OCU and keep enough pilots current to fillout to 36 aircraft in an emergency unless you have your 12 aircraft flying 24/7.
Fairly sure you’ll find that you have multiple pilots assigned to each aircraft as well.
For example.
Australia has 71 F/A-18A/B’s (54A+’s & 17 B’s)
These 71 airframes are spread over 3 Active squadrons plus an OCU.
Now. You (and Lord Jim) are suggesting buying 60-80 aircraft for an active force of at minimum 3 squadrons plus and OCU (minimum ~48 aircraft).
You then plan on operating these aircraft in an environment where accidents are more likely result in the loss of an aircraft then it is for land based aircraft. Plus because of corrosion, wear on the airframe is likely to be higher then for land based assets.
Plus, even though F-35 will stay in production for a long time, there is the problem that any attrition replacement order will have to wait until the next free spot on the production line, potentially a couple of years after the order is placed.
Seeing some issues?
I think it it starting to look like the two carriers will never be at sea at the same time. This would allow the number of aircraft purchased for them to be reduced significantly with only one full strength air wing available plus training units, so around 40-50 airframes for the RN, with a smaller number 20-30possibly for the RAF to suppliment the air wing in an emergency. Both serviced would use the same training/evaluation units.
So you want to have a single airgroup deployed 100% of the time? The airframes will not last long at all, and you wont be able to get volunteers to fill out the units, because as soon as they get families, they will resign or transfer to another part of the Navy/RAF.
@ djcross: The days of airborne sensors are certainly far from over! I would even say that the large platforms will gain tasks, mostly as relay and for UAV control.
Boeing got in trouble from the RAAF for releasing the ability of the Project Wedgetail airframes to control UAV’s in flight.
The Erieye does not offer 360 deg coverage.
To the OP, I wondered too about other platforms that can replace the E-2D in the non carrier form like the ones used by the RSAF, ROC and RCAF. With the new APY-9 radar. It could offer competition to the other alternatives (Phalcon/Erieye).
Maybe mount it on a C27 or any turboprop MPA or maybe converted regional jets or the large business jets G550/Bombardier global express with more consoles to do C3 roles and offer better operational range/on station time.
Why hasn’t Lockheed at least tried that market that?

The RAAF’s AEW & C. Aircraft was later Ordered by a number of other Countries as well.
Turkey & South Korea have placed orders, with possible future orders from Italy and UAE.
