To quote a well known saying “I dont belieeeve it”, whilst trying to locate a certain CD for a relatives Xmas gift, I came across several CDs that are made up totally of music from the testcard! I seem to remember from ‘sickie days’ as a child being curious as to why there was never any pop or rock tunes. Do any of the wise sages here know why? After all the Beeb broadcasted pop/rock on the radio stations at the time.

Rob. Lovely collection ! I like the Turkish, can we see through the windows across the aisle or is that a trick of the light ?????

Not an EZY in sight ???? :diablo:

    Keith.:)

Rob, some stunning pics there. Keith , that looks like the ‘strip’ lighting that runs at the top of the windows to me, but I could be wrong.

I am sure I have a picture somewhere of an Iraqi IL76, not sure it’s the pig flight but I will try & dig it out.

    S.B.

According to my moth eaten log books, the Iraqi in fact night stopped at STN during the summer of 82. Their Heathrow station manager came up to supervise and was the absolute image of Vincent Price….eerie! You can see the small enclosed pig pens being ‘forked’ onto the beast. If you look at the two figures in front of the a/c nearest the Shell bowser, I’m the one on the left. On my iMac I can zoom in on the image and I’m wearing the load controllers red topped peaked cap, which Servisair demanded at the time. I’m so grateful that you posted it-thanks.

cs. Thats the colour scheme alright. IMO one of the best on a 76.

HP81. Can never resist an IF IL62M picture. I ‘ramped’ that Interflug 134 that day and I still have the postcards and inflight magazine given to me by the friendly crew onboard. I flew on one of those Interflug 134s into Gatwick from Tirana back in the late 80s, the outbound leg was a little better being an IL18! That Aeroflot IL62 was tied up with bringing in a Soviet football team I think. Love that Cubana 76. BTW does anyone have a pic of an Iraqi IL76 which visited STN to pick up a load of piglets (yes piglets) in the mid 80s? darren, keep those LTN shots coming

I also remember that the test card was the only way to tune the telly! “Set” as it was called. Remember trying to get the Horizontal and Vertical hold right LoL!! You could also get the colour perfect by using BBC news, the newsreader was perfectly lit. If you had colour that is!

I’ve really let the Genie out of the bottle now. My next door neighbour apparently used to be a ‘telly’ repair guy some years ago and proceeded the other day to explain what parts of that test pattern was used for checking different functions of the set. He told me that back in the 60s, 70s and early 80s that the pattern was very necessary for setting up the TV in peoples homes and for checking in the workshop! Apparently nowadays engineers have small gadgets to check these things without an on screen pattern. Thats the very last time I tell a non forum person about what topics crops up on here! Was interesting info I guess;)

Another one, this time the 80’s, this hard worked 707 was a regular & a personal favourite of mine.
Thanks for the Britt. picture Keith, I think that small tree may still be there, it certainly survived well into my time at STN.

I certainly remember this one. It was one of many 707s our company handled at STN. These included GAS, UAS, ZAS, EAS, Naganagani, Point Air, Okada, MAOF, and Bangladesh Biman to name but a few. More pics like these anytime please!

As is usual, there is more than one link in the chain of events that lead to this terrible disaster. Should Continental face action for the piece of metal leaving that DC10? No question in my mind that they should. As is blatantly obvious to anyone with a shred of common sense, there is definitely a mix of culpability on the part of Air France, ADP and I feel the BEA. Who else can the public at large, French or otherwise, trust for an accurate and fair assessment of this tragedy and others like it. I really do think that there should be a thorough investigation of how the BEA carried out its duties and its verdict be made public, with those being found responsible for any ‘covering up’ or involvement with vested interests held accountable. None of the parties involved in this are guilt free. A right and proper investigation is the very least that that the victims and their families deserve.

I think they’d gone out out of business before I started at Sumburgh (1990) but I remember the name from when my dad worked as a refueller and I would come along in the bowser during the school holidays – back in the good old non-over-the-top-security days:rolleyes::(

Oh to hear a Viscount or 748 again:)

I wish I could too. Ref Air Ecosse, I forgot how long ago that was……..a common failing of us ‘olduns’ you know;)

Aw this batch of STN pics (and the others) is an absolute feast!. civilspotter, that IF IL 62M is a rare treat, where was it taken? And good ‘ol Conair, they put 720Bs in twice a week, one of which was a turbojet ‘coal burner’! That Securicor/Skyguard Herald we used to see at STN twice every weeknight BHX-STN-BRU-STN-BHX, never much time to do the loadsheet on that one! darren, to my shame I did not spot that the SAS DC9 was at STN. On checking my memories box I found that the a/c for my SAS licence exam was OY-KGB. If these shots were taken on a Sunday then I would have been there as being wall to wall ‘Scandi’s’ day we had to be on shift. With JAT being my second favourite carrier it was treat to see those too. Was the DC9 at LTN? I better stop boring you all and I could have the mods after me for too much text;)

A very good point. There’s no way that the fuel tanks did not rupture on impact by the look of the wreckage.

Fascinating. I presume that if true that it would only be the Airbus part of EADS? Can’t imagine any defence parts of the company would form part of the deal. But in this day and age who knows…..maybe wikileaks will have something;)
