I used to work alot with Sterling Caravelles in the early to mid 80s. They were a very beautiful aircraft, the Super 12B stretch version even more so. Gabon Express was the last known operator of a “combi” version although this operation has now ended. I don’t think that Air Gabon itself operated the type although the Gabon Govt used to operate one in the VIP role, I believe that it was donated to them by France. Many ex French colonies benefited from similar “gifts” The Caravelles that I flew on were operated by Transeuropa, Sterling and Transwede.
Very classy! Like it alot. It suggests (quite rightly) that this airline is a quality carrier……….Not many around these days.
Stunning!
Lets all hope that the French “BEA” make a better job of the investigation with this incident than they did with the Concorde tragedy!
Kabir, according to a friend of mine who visited Havana just before Xmas he saw most An2s in the colours of Aerotaxi but also a few in Cubana colours. Wether the Cubana An2s are still in scheduled service or not I’m not sure. But as with Aerocarribean and Aerogaviota, Aerotaxi is affiliated with Cubana.
Cubana update……The Cuban flag carrier is understood to be studying the IL96-300 as a replacement for the IL62M. T5, the A330 concerned is a Swedish machine belonging to Novair. Further details in Febs mag. Steve, Cubana still flies a mainly Soviet fleet: IL62M, IL76, IL18, TU154M, Yak42, Yak40, AN24, AN26 and the AN2 as well as a fleet of Mil8 helicopters. They also operated a small fleet of ex Aviaco F27s but these have since been sold on and are expected to be replaced with ATR42s. Aerogaviota, a Cubana subsidiary has flown the ATR within Cuba for some time now.
Its not a new scheme. I despatched an IL62M of theirs from STN in the mid 90s wearing the same livery and Uzbeks first A310 was delivered not long after in the same colours. Airliners.net is wrong on this one
Nasir, as ever great artwork! I think my favourite has to be No:3.
Kabir..The DC10s were leased from French outfit AOM to operate flights to and from Europe. Rumour has it that we could soon see up to 4 A340s in Cubana colours. Very nice. Just think, if the insane US trade blockade against Cuba was lifted Boeing could have tendered! Ah well, Governments know best!
YAK 40…..The first regional jet ever!
TU134……Not a true regional but stunning good looks.
The rest of it, apart from the Fokkers, you can send back to Argos!!!
Are there no plans to upgrade LIS for A380 operations?
Here she comes!!!!…………..Can’t wait to see the first flight. Would look good in TAP colours I think.
Ooooooh! Such hostility to Airbus from some. What is it that generates such dislike of the enterprise? .
Besides all the rhetoric and anti Airbus hysteria lets not forget that the progress of the company has been truly staggering. Boeing ought to be ahead……they’ve had decades of a
head start. Well I for one, am proud of Airbus and the UKs involvement in it, its also right that Boeing is out there and producing products that give airlines the choice and us something different to look at……Long may the two companies prosper!
No the VC10 does not have the tail post as it does not need one. The IL62 has its centre of gravity point further aft than does the VC10 and also has engines and a tailplane assembly which are heavier. There is also a water ballast tank in the IL62 located foreward of the wing which is either filled or drained before departure according to payload to provide a safe trim. From a load control/loadsheet point of view the IL62 could be a trial if not fully loaded, but I still enjoyed the challenge of working with them. The tail strut is hydraulically operated with two small wheels at the end which when rertracted remain partially exposed to act as protection against a tail strike on rotation. The strut is normally lowered two thirds or so after leaving the runway and always fully extended on arrival on stand, for departure however the strut is normally fully retracted prior to pushback as the onboard payload provides the required stability.
Nice pics……..thanks.
