    RE: Favourite Soviet Built Aircraft?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-01-03 AT 11:19 PM (GMT)]Phantom-here she is in all her glory. The TU110 ,on further research I have found out that only the prototype was built although it did serve with Soviet A/F. According to statistics it was superior to TU104 but decision taken not to produce it in any number. Maybe because TU104 already in service?

    Enjoy.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-01-03 AT 04:38 PM (GMT)]I have to admit to not being a huge Boeing fan. During my time in civil aviation I came to the conclusion that the Airbus product was,and still is superior. From a load control point of view I always found Airbus aircraft to be easier to work and more forgiving and flexible in what you could plan. Whilst ramping the two makes at close quarters I always felt that the appearance and finish of the Airbus was better. I think that it is time that Boeing tore itself free of the 60s designs and some technologies of its short haul products. I think to be fair to them that the 777 and later versions of the 747 are formidable types and Airbus dismiss them at their peril. But the world moves on and Boeing must do the same. I am not a pilot but got to know many, especially within Monarch, and the pilots that I canvassed there were in no doubt that the Aibus had the edge! I recently watched an old documentary on video from my collection where a senior Boeing official totally dismissed the concept of fly by wire and proudly stated that airlines would never pay for it.The rest of course is history. Take care Boeing not to become so!

Phantom-Are you familiar with the TU110 which was a four engined version of the TU104? I believe that apart from a slightly increased wingspan to take in the extra engines, the airframe was identical. I think only two or three examples were built and they served in the transport service of the Soviet Air Force-again a lovely looking aircaft. Sorry if you knew about it already!

    RE: Favourite Soviet Built Aircraft?

I have to say that my favourite Soviet built aircraft has to be the IL62,closely followed by both the TU134A and IL18. I flew some years ago on an Aeroflot IL62 from LHR to SVO,the return flight was on TU154. In 1987 I flew from LGW to TIA on an Interflug IL18 which took close on 5hrs! It was supposed to be a TU134 charter,I never did find out why the change, but what a substitute. I guess the only time that I felt uneasy on a Soviet transport was during a trip from Peking to Pyongyang on board a CAAK TU134A,a thunderstorm and non working seat belt being major contributions to my worries. Anyway I survived this and many other trips on Soviet built aircraft and, in the main, enjoyed them all. Good to see so many balanced responses to Saabs posting.

Because if your handling company is unlucky enough to inhabit an airport where around 80% of the traffic is low cost carriers what choice does the management have? Look, what I put in the posting is not intended to be an all encompassing critique of the low cost concept-they are a fact of airline life now. The problems that I listed were genuine, alot of very good people that I worked with lost jobs through them. Thankfully, in my case I had already gone to pastures new and I am still happy that I did. I love aviation very much, but as I am sure you’ll understand mongu, our opinions are shaped by our experiences

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-12-02 AT 01:37 AM (GMT)]God save us from an industry full of “Low cost carriers” Having fairly recently ended a 21 year career in aviation on the ground, I think that the only part of the overall equation that these low cost carriers are good for are the passengers!(sometimes) From a ground handling company’s point of view these carriers did no one else any favours. The problems ranged from impossible turnround fees/times and contractual conditions,to concocted delay code situations to land the poor handling agents with heavy penalty payments for “delayed” departures. This went a long way to subsidising the unrealistic fare levels that we are currently seeing. On top of this scenario, due to the ridiculous rates and conditions attatched to the handling contracts for these carriers, the standard of living of the ground staff associated with these “airlines” was ruined. It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to work out that this process cannot be open ended! As far as running over staff are concerned I had many occasions in my job to complain to airport apron authorities ref the taxying antics of a certain “low cost carrier” ref the safety of my staff, in its pursuit of shorter turnrounds. I for one am pleased to see a turnround in the fortunes of the larger carriers,as said already on this forum, its high time the playing field was levelled ref landing and nav fees etc, then lets see how it all unfolds. Right-off the soapbox. My apologies if this mssg offends, but it is based on my own professional experience,at a fairly senior operational level, dealing with the handling of these carriers.

RE: Aeroflot’s ‘hammer & sickle’ is on the chopping block

A great shame to hear that yet another piece of Russian airline history is on the “bloc”. I for one have flown Aeroflot many times as well as Interflug,Balkan,Tarom,Malev,LOT and Air Koryo. The only “communist” airline that I have ever found cause for complaint whilst using was Air China-Funnily enough the service on that carrier fitted exactly the “scare stories”about Aeroflot that you commonly hear about, In my opinion even the fact that we were flying on a 747SP didn’t save them! Sadly I suppose, the winged hammer and sickle has political overtones that some just can’t live with-a pity but then I guess that for us living in the “west” the overtones are not the same-Sorry to see the change none the less!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-12-02 AT 04:56 PM (GMT)]Yes there was…at least we used to see Worldways Canada on weekly charters thru Stansted during the mid 80s. Initially flights used DC8-63, and then Tristars. I think they have gone now, along with another Canadian carrier Odyssey International, who operated some of the nicest liveried B757s that I can recall. The tragedy of Odyssey was that it was the parent company Soundair which went under and took the financially healthy airline with it, an all too familiar scenario.

    RE: Thrust reversers

During my time in the 80’s as a Traffic Officer/Load Controller at Stansted we used to handle the IL62s of both Aeroflot and Cubana. The thrust reversers on these a/c were usually deployed on crossing the runway threshold just prior to touchdown. According to a Cuban First Officer this was necessary due to the high landing speed of the IL62 and the fact that it had no leading edge slats to provide a more reasonable, sedate approach. The sight of such rapid deceleration and sudden nose down pitch on such a large aircraft at so low an altitude was something to see. I miss ’em, but I dont think the local residents do!

Nice pics KabirT….Is that an Antonov An26 in the first pic? Is it also correct that the Indian Air Force uses type names for its aircraft as well as the official designation. An ex Air India 747 Capt did tell me that he thought that was so, but it was a long time ago!
