Thanks for your help, appreciated.
Especially Paul who nailed it and to Don, well spotted regarding the engine cowls and what wasn’t under them.
Good on ya Mate.

On a tangent, my inlaws are doing a family tree at the moment, and someone in their past was killed aboard HMS Illustrious in 1938 during a deck landing accident, he is buried in Bermuda.
Is this the relative?

The Yanks (NASA) spending millions on researching a pen that was suitable for space use – while the Ruskies quietly carried on working with pencils…
I asume that this means that fighter jocks no longer sit in a cockpit?

One of the major problems for people dealing with local councils while working through building permits was the word – erection!

Misty mornings at an airfield – unbeatable.
I love the ambience and during my time in the RNZAF, especially at Wigram which was at that time our grass training field.
Crisp frosty early mornings with the promise of a clear day, opening the hangar doors and looking inside – man how I loved those days.
Great story John, nice to have the real story.
Note the the book that I quoted from was published, from memory, in 1969.
At least you all made it safely…by the grace of God and some dammed good work it seems

Oh wow.
I look at the construction techniques and styles used during the development of aviation especially the WW.II era, the infrastructure, obtaining the raw materials, the training of ground crews (not to mention the assembly and technical personnel from the factories) and I marvel at the finished product.
Now we see these very same aircraft being resurrected in the hands of equally skilled dedicated craftsmen.
And thanks to Avspecs, who give us enthusiasts the privilege of seeing this progression through their excellent web site.
