Gentleman, I can’t thank you enough for your help – those two do indeed seem like the men in question. I will continue my research now – but if anyone can also identify the chap on the far left, that would be much appreciated.

Hi Sabrejet – do you mean you have some evidence of them being there back in 2002? If so, could you message with the details? I keep scouring but can’t find any sign of them either.

    Hello all,

Bumping this thread again in the event anyone out there might have any leads on the status of the surviving two machines. These would be 351 and 353, possibly located at Debre Zeit in Ethiopia. Condition unknown, possibly in pieces now. If anyone can help, I would be really grateful.

Having worked in publishing I don’t know of any other than the BAE shots, but that doesn’t mean to say someone didn’t photograph them on delivery of course.

Would love to see the book when its finished

    Hi Tim,

There is a photo out there showing one of them coming in to land at Warton in 1968 in colour, and I am trying to contact the photographer who caught it, but no joy so far. It looks like he was a spotter, so I’m hoping he wasn’t unique and others may also have caught them on camera.

The book is almost finished and I hope to approach publishers at some point this year. I’ll keep you posted, and there’s a Facebook link in my sig as well if you want to keep tabs on it 🙂

    Best,

    Steve

Thanks, but it might be the same as the ones I got from BAe. There were several air to air shots, both colour and b/w taken at the time it seems, and one of them showing an unpainted a/c with rocket pods fitted on the ground. I have all these, and a few others from test pilots actually out in Ethiopia. Just trying to see if there are any spotter photos that were never published.

Thanks Propstrike. I had run a thread over there too, I’ll give it a bump.

Thread bump – would anyone out there by chance have any photos or information relating to Ethiopian Air Force Canberras? I have managed to gather some stories from former pilots over the last few years, but would love to hear more before I finish this chapter.

I guess you also have pictures of the remains of this aircraft on Kismayo airport in 1993.

I have them (two shots), and am trying to secure permission to use them from the original photographer. If you know him or know if there are more, please can you let me know.

    Hi Simon,

That’s a shame. Since it’s been over year, I thought I’d check in to see if anyone has managed to track him down. A few years ago I had heard he was living in Italy, but actually that was more like 2007-2008 ish. If anyone is in contact with him I’d love to know.

Not sure if this one was taken in UK it’s not a great picture.

Thanks, I already have that photo, sent to me by the man that took it during navigator training. It was taken in Ethiopia near Debre Zeit. If anyone can turn up any other photos of these machines, I’d be grateful.

Would anyone out there possibly have any photos of Ethiopian Air Force Canberras? This is a long shot, as after trawling the web I have yet to find more than the classic shot of one being test flown of the English countryside. If anyone has any photos in their archives of them in squadron service, I would dearly love to see them.

    Hello,
that would be great, it’s always worth a shot. My only concern is he may have been too young especially if he went on to TT.18s on 100 Sqn, but certainly please PM his details.

    Thanks a lot.

    Hello all,

This is an appeal to the collective resources of the forum again. I’m approaching the final stages of the book which has gone very well. There are a couple of weak areas however, one being RNZAF usage of the Canberra. If anyone here has contacts within veterans groups for 14 and 75 Sqns (RNZAF) I would be very grateful if you could connect me. I had some marginal success with 14 Sqn a couple of years ago, but would very much like to flesh out this part of the book, as I feel the New Zealand experience is significant. In particular, I would love to talk to anyone that either flew or maintained RNZAF Canberras during the Malayan Emergency.

The other request is a rather specific one, but if you don’t ask you never know. I’m looking for anyone that might have contact details for a Sqn Ldr David E. Dowling, or his family members. I’m not sure if he is alive, but Sqn Ldr Dowling was involved (as a then Flt Lt) in training Peruvian pilots to fly their newly acquired B(I).8s in 1956. Later he went on to fly Lockheed U-2s on covert ops for the CIA via Mi6 but that is another story. If anyone could help with information on him or his family, I would very much like to get in touch.

    Thanks all for your time.

    Kind regards,

    Steve

RNHF_PILOT, were you ever able to track down Mike Broadwater? If so, please would you let me know, here or PM is fine, as I would very much like to get in touch with him.
