Hey TR1 , this is exactly what I am saying !
Limited to “thin” inner wing pylon load (1000l fuel tanks , 2000l for Rafale) .
Then , this Typhoon can ‘t drop anything because it hasn ‘t got the required laser pod (!) .
We could also talk about the robustness of the wings and overall airframe to withstands real heavy load under Gs . Check how much weigth each pylon can take and compare with the Rafale (example) .
At 5Gs , the Rafale can withstands 10 tons more (!) than the Typhoon .
Check the numbers 😉
Cheers .
Kovy :
based on nothing
I agree 200% .
Am I the only one to think that the Rafale would get the upper hand on the Typhoon BVR ? Just checking …
Cheers .
EE :
Even in it’s current form 2x ASRAAM, 4x AMRAAM, 4x Paveway II, 1x LDP, 2x external drop tanks is quite an impressive load to admire. Theres not too many aircraft that can carry such a wide range wrt numbers is concerned.
What I admire is the fact that whatever the AtoG is , it keeps its teeth in AtoA with 6 Missiles . From medium to high altitude , the Typhoon with such a load is still an outstanding opponent in the BVR regime .
Its 4 Amraam belly harpoints show its Interceptor design .
Now , I wouldn ‘t say that I “admire” such load .
The thing is : what the customer wants ?
The Typhoon is an Interceptor with a good multirole capability . In France , we see it as a M2000 on steroids and I bet that India also sees it as such .
It is not a true multirole fighter (or omnirole) because of its very specific design . I mean that no one would build a true multirole fighter with such landing gear system , using the main wing when heavy external stores should be there :

Then , the heavy (wet) hardpoints should not be limited to 1,500kg but be cleared for 2,000kg+ . Also , its 7,500kg max payload clearly show that it wasn ‘t design to bring havoc on far away enemy ground forces (Rafale = 9,500kg , 2 tons more . 2,000l fuel tanks , etc …) .
The Typhoon ‘s range on an AtoG mission “Hi-Lo-Hi” is slightly smaller than the M2000 ‘s range for the same mission .
Typhoon was designed for THAT:

There , it shines .
Its aerodynamics also show an Interceptor design , like the M2000 with a similar load :

I am not comparing the Typhoon to a M2000-5 , I only show that both designs are based on the same idea : fly high and fast and kill everything .
I hate to repeat myself but the Typhoon wasn ‘t built to be a true multirole fighter . France managed to turn the M2000 into a decent and very capable strike-fighter but it has the same shortcomings than the Typhoon . Again , not comparing , just talking about overall design .
Cheers .
EE , I thank you for the kind words 😉
On the geo-political level , France and the UK (in that order) took the lead indeed . Our other European partners also did a great job and demonstrated some very real capabilities while using very few aircraft and I am very pleased with it personaly . Kudos to them . 🙂
EE , France is not taking all the credits but without Sarkozy ‘s fast response based on our early Intels the Libyan civilians and first Rebels would have been smashed to pieces . In fact , NATO had to follow France very early and begins to accomodate itself with the French Air sorties . Since we had some of our own military Sats in good orbite over Libya , we were able to design our own air campaign very early . The various paths to the key targets deep inside the Libyan mainland were already known .
We started on Benghazi because it was urgent to break the blockade and protect the civilians but the SCALP-EGs deep-strikes against military airfields quickly followed . At that time , NATO main logistic lines and EW warfare capabilities (mainly US) were not needed and even squarely discarded .
Of course , the Libyans did the real fighting and uprising and the victory is their . But France was the first to jump in and was the main Libyan “partner” and all the Arabs states today (and NATO) are aknowledging the fact .
Cheers .
EE :
Doesn’t seem to stop some French members from boasting that their air force & navy achieved more over Libya than the Brits, on here and on other forums.
And rightly , numbers talk for themselves .
The fact is we shouldn ‘t bash each other as we both did a great job . Yes , the French took the lead and kept it all the way (and that can ‘t be denied) but it was a NATO Ops . Everybody did its bit .
To be honest , from day 1 minus 30 (a month before the Ops begin) I knew that Sarkozy was going to “send the Forces” and take the lead .
Libya shown that the Tornado is still UK ‘s main striker and it does the job very well still , while the Typhoon demonstrated some multirole capabilities .
All good .
Cheers .
Nic , uncalled for and defamatory . Be careful …
Cheers .
TR1 :
It sure does.
I stand corrected . Excellent rear view 🙂
Boom :
Blue, how many times did the pilot turn his head to look 180 degree behind him ? human beings can’t even see exactly backwards unless in peripheral vision. not unless you twist your body as well.
Well , we are not going to argue on few degrees here and there , are we ? He does twist his upper body on some occasions , mind .
Anyway , I am sure that you understood what I meant Sir .
I won’t wait long for designers to switch to cameras to cater for SA in that aspect.
It ‘s called EODAS and it ‘s on the F-35 .

TR1 :
Thanks for the vid Blue
You ‘re welcome .
A good rear view is very immportant . The Flankers don ‘t provide the best rear view I believe .
Cheers .
Excellent response J-20 Hotdog , precise and factual 🙂
Cheers .
TR1 :
good luck cranking your head around to the point that 360 degree vision actually plays a role, especially in a combat scenario. If even possible, it would have zero utility.
Boom :
no pilot likes to turn his head 180 degree to look backwards and lose his all important situational awareness for even a moment, however bubbly his canopy may be
I think that you are both wrong . In dogfight , the pilot always try to never loose eye contact with the target . He moves his head in all directions very quickly and only look ahead to verify the HUD and the c0ckpit mirrors (if any) .
Like in this video Rafale vs F-16 at RedFlag (at 1:50+) :

This is one of the reasons why helmets and HMS must be as light as possible .
Cheers .
jdsgn :
you guys are soo pessimistic its not even funny.
He is right . The whole program is way ahead of itself , even cheaper than planned , everything is working better than intended and the 3 versions are ready to attack China .
All the rest is propaganda …
Cheers .
Type59 , I don ‘t know where you ‘re going or where you wanna go …
But there is one thing I know , you and I are probably living on different worlds …
Cheers .
Obligatory :
Storm Shadow & SCALP EG is the same missile, just different name in english/french
Oh really ??? We didn ‘t know 😀
Cheers .
Type59 :
In violation of UN rules.
Yep , surely . But … I agree with this move and more often than not , someone has to act faster than the UN because innocent civilians lives are at stake . As an ex military and as a French citizen , I clap my hands .
France has done it , well … many times before . In Africa mostly . We believe in Human rights , it ‘s in our skin and when we see innocent people dying when a UN resolution can take weeks or months or more , we go in to protect the civilians and of course , our interests (I know) .
Cheers .
Wrightwing :
Allow me to rephrase- there’s no way you’d get a cheaper aircraft with the same capabilities, or anywhere near the same IOC.
lol ! 😀 Wrightwing , go to bed . A good night sleep can do marvels to a lost man . 😉
Give the same budget to Dassault and they ‘ ll end up with an X-Wing …
Cheers .
