NIce pics, Stieglitz π I suspect the Bf 109G-2 is the Messerschmitt-Foundation’s converted Ha 1109. But that silver Flash-Gordon-style paint is absolutely awful π‘

Even if it could run on diesel it wouldn’t be viable, since you’re unlikely to be able to obtain diesel on an airfield. I think one object with these engines is not only to lower costs, but also to cater for the increasing lack of availability of AVGAS 100LL in many countries. With this fuel containing more lead than any automotive petrol ever did and a decreasing worldwide consumption making production increasingly financially uninteresting for oil companies, diesel engines could be the future, given that JET A1 is available almost anywhere. As regards MOGAS, “my” airfield recently enquired with BP whether it would be possible to set up such filling station on the airfield. When they learned that expected sales in a year would correspond to the weekly sale of a garage forecourt station, the answer was no…
The model/mock-up in the picture still exists in a private collection in South Germany. I stumbled across their website some time ago, but unfortunately didn’t note the URL
thanks a_w!
Nice pics, Andrew! Would you happen to have noticed whether there are still any ex RDanAF S-55 lying around there, and if so, do you have any pics of those?
Try http://www.axisaircraft.com π
It is based on a Hispano HA 1109 (with a Hispano V-12 and not a Merlin..) which for many years was displayed in front of what was then MBB in Augsburg, and also in a now defunct museum there, which housed the Koch Collection. It now belongs to the Messerchmitt-Foundation and is often taken by lorry to several events throughout the year.
Nice pics, Roger! I was there too, but on Tuesday and Friday, where the weather was somewhat nicer. What did you think of the event?
Sorry Roger, I don’t…..
Does anyone know if the Dornier 24 operates from one of the lakes near Berlin during ILA?
I heard yesterday at the ILA that a landing on the MΓΌckelsee (spelling) was planned.
I’ve seen that your pics have been placed on a other site:
Thanks; there are already quite a few of my pics on Mikael’s site (Scandinavians help each other…. π )
Engines look like P&W PT6 Turbines
which is what they are!
ILA-visitors can see it display daily there until Sunday – although that display is a bit tame compared with the water landings.
Yes, it has. The exhibition centre comprises two rows of halls which have been arranged about an axis more or less coincident with the old runway. This was one of the first things to be demolished actually, but only after careful study of WW2 aerial photographs to identify possible unexploded bombs. Four or five years ago I visited a fair there (I live in Munich) and had to park on a very remote temporary parking place, and happened to walk on short remaining strip of taxiway on my way to the fair grounds, but this part has also been splattered with buidings now.
what is that roundel it’s bearing?
Some sort of homegrown logo; nothing military.
Let me just repeat what I wrote in the first post:
If you have the opportunity to watch this aircraft do a water landing, don’t miss it!
A part of the terminal building and the old tower is all that is left and they are not accesible to the public . A new trade fair was built on the site and there is nothing else left anymore…. π Munich is a beautiful town but I wouldn’t go there just for the old airport…
