RE: Scanner test
Have you tried the sharpening filters in your photo editing software? All scans require some sort of sharpening afterwards (the sharpening function in the scan software is usually not sufficient!). I can recommend Adobe Photoshop Elements, which often comes free with the scanner, otherwise it is not that expensive. Use the “Unsharp Maskening” function. Be careful with too heavy compression of the picture size as it can result in jagged lines.
RE: Airshow Irritations!
Airshow irritations? British airshow enthusiasts complaining about airshows in Great Britain! Have a look at what is going on on the continent and you will realise that in no other European country do you have such an amount and diversity of airshows and display aircraft. If you can find one where you don’t need to spend 3-4 hours in your car to get there from where you’re staying, then go to an airshow in Germany and you will never complain again.
RE: Replica Me 262 has flown!!
Thanks for the info Ant. If I understand the various info on the Flug Werk project, then it seems that the number of fully-assembled aircraft is strictly limited, for the same reasons quoted by the CAA. The remainder are delivered as kits.
RE: Replica Me 262 has flown!!
Could anyone please point to a source where the CAA actually explicitly states that a Flug Werk FW190 will not be allowed to fly in the UK? Without such a source I am otherwise not very inclined to believe that they would ban it, because:
– at least two other substantial 100% scratch-built replica aircraft have already flown on more than one occasion in the UK, namely a Grumman F3F and the American Vickers Vimy;
– everything seems to run very smoothly between Flugwerk and the Luftfahrtbundesamt (LBA), the German civilian aviation authority, and they are in no way comparable to the CAA in terms of what they grant a Permit to Fly or a CoA (one look at the warbird scene in Germany, a country with a population of 80 million, should tell it all) and the CAA is surely aware of the LBA´s high standards;
– similar warbirds which are or have been on the UK register are for all intents and purposes also replicas (the Spitfire in which Charles Church was killed springs to mind), and because
– I fail to see how an authority which is sufficiently liberal to tolerate non-military organisations operating high-performance ex-military jets (Jet Provosts, Gnats and Hunters) flown amongst others by people with a PPL could have any problems with a replica WW2 fighter aircraft.
Did you know that Lufthansa has had to fit silencers and non-original three-bladed propellers to its Ju 52 to comply with “noise” regulations? Did you know that you have to fit a silencer to a J3 Cub if you want completely restriction free flying with it in Germany? Did you known that ultralight flying is banned completely in Switzerland? Have a look at conditions in other countries and then you will realise how well you are off with the CAA as a vintage aircraft enthusiast in the UK – and hopefully stop the perpetual knocking of them.

RE: Flying classics
These nice pics are from my part of the world, Munich Airport (was there on Sunday in fact!) and they form part of a quite elaborate visitors center with a spectators hill, restaurant, souvenir shop and playground. Data for the a/c are as follows:
Swissair “HB-IRN” Douglas C-53/DC-3 (c/n 4828), ex OY-DCA (SAS), OY-KLE, OH-VKA, N65371, “N569R”. Never served with Swissair.
Lufhansa “D-ANOY” CASA 352L (c/n 54), ex N88927, D-CIAS. Was previously displayed at Frankfurt Airport and recently beautifully restored. Accessible for a fee of €1,-.
Lufthansa “D-ALEP” Lockheed L-1049G Constellation (c/n 4671), ex F-BHML (Air France), “D-ADAM”, “D-ALAP”. Never flew with Lufthansa and also originated from the Air Klassik (Kurfiss) Collection in Frankfurt. Restoration and repaint completed by volunteers last year, whereupon much of the glazing and the cockpit furnishings were smashed up by vandals. Also accesible.
The airport (a.k.a. Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport) opened in 1992 in these aircraft arrived one by one over the following years. The visitors park is well worth a visit; it’s 1200m walk from Terminal A or one stop by S-Bahn (“Besucherpark”)
RE: Does anyone know anything about quality of Medion computers?
Here in Germany we have two Medion computers and are very, very satisfied with them. In terms of value for money they are unbeatable and have never posed any problems. We have two Medion monitors as well, one of them broke down and was replaced under warranty (took them a month to send me a new one, but no quibbling or other problems on their part).

RE: My favourite KLM aircraft
As far as I recall there was an article on this aircraft in FlyPast many years ago, and if I remember correctly then it was indeed painted in KLM colours as a training exercise without ever having flown in these colours. I also seem to remember that there was a second aircraft in these colours, possibly a Harvard. Do you know more, Roger?
RE: Some pics for the weekend
Great pictures, especially the close-up. I visited the Willy-Messerschmitt-Stiftung, the owner of the Saeta in Germany, in Manching a month ago, and overheard a mechanic say that it is no longer airworthy and will eventually go to the Deutsches Museum in Oberschleissheim. I have also heard from another source (info dated July 2002) that an AD has recently grounded all civilian-operated Turboméca Marboré engines (which in the Saeta) which are more than 20 years old; there might be a relationship here.
RE: Pic of the evening
Those are great pictures, Roger! I would be interested in knowing more about how they originated, i.e. which camera and lens did you use, what was the cameraship and how where you positioned in it, and what kind briefing took place in advance?
RE: What are your most favourite aviation museums?
For “atmosphere”: Hendon (was also my first big a/c museum.. at only 9 years of age)
For location: IWM Duxford
For sheer size: USAF Museum (almost too big)
For rarities and oddities: (1) Swedish Air Force Museum in Linköping, (2) Musée de l’air, Paris
Most overlooked museum: Danish Collection of Vintage Aircraft in Stauning, Denmark (has an example of each(!) type built by Skandinavisk Aero Industri (Kramme & Zeuthen) on show (10 types), all airworthy except for two, and much more)
Most endangered collection: Luftwaffe Museum, Berlin (most post-WW2 aircraft are outside and it shows…)
Award for lack of concept: Deutsches Museum, Oberschleissheim
RE: Pictures of Flug Werk’s FW190 at Manching on 28.09.02
No details available yet about the airshow in Oberschleissheim/Munich, except for the date. It is supposed to be a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Deutsches Museum (equivalent to the Science Museum) in Munich, which has a dedicated aircraft museum on this airfield.
RE: Not in the spirit of FlyPast
On the subject of sense of humour let me relate the following spotters anecdote I picked up on the German forum http://www.flugzeugforum.de :
At a photoday in the Netherlands a group of spotters were all at the ready with a plethora of cameras etc. to photograph a US jet of some sort as it approached its stand, whereby such a photo may not give the impression of being taken at an airshow/photoday (i.e. no fences, people or other clutter). Much to their chagrin, as the canopy opened the 2nd crewmember immediately stood up and pointed a video camera at them!! Later that day two of them got into a (physical) fight over photo locations..
