Oh boy yes. The video brought back memories of the early 1970s and the sound of Canadian and German 104s howling into winters’ nights on long instrument approaches into RAF bases around the UK.
Anyone who heard them will know exactly what I mean!
They definately had a distinctive Yowl, especially when spooling up for take off.
I loved the 4 ship displays of the ’70s, in the days when 1 would split off, 3 would do a slow flypast, and the 4th would scream down the crowdline and make everyone jump!
I think that most people who appreciate the Lightning also have a soft spot for the widow-maker.
I think it is that the Starfighter shares the concept of being nothing more than a closely-cowled engine(s) with the bare minimum of aerodynamic appendage and accomodation to be functional.
They also make a rather nice noise:D
Saw a KC135 doing very low tight circuits as I came past the ‘Hall yesterday, lovely to see an old bus being hauled around like that. I did take some picks from my phone, but they did not come out well…
“A $100,000 engine driven by Jet fuel”?!
What is under that cowling?
Just seen on another forum that it has a diseasal fitted, hence the Jet Fuel….but the price is a little high….
It was quite usual whilst I was on training for some of the guys to pop ‘wide awake pills’ to keep going especially during the sleep-deprivation parts (I didn’t)
Once on to flying training there was less need for it, but the hard drinking got harder, I once remember starting a bad-weather Barrel at 1 in the afternoon, drinking right through, culminating in playing the banjo with 2 of my instructors at 5 in the morning, (which didn’t go down well in the Sgt’s Mess)
I was then in the air at 9:00…Not clever or responsible, but I was 19 and led astray by 2 of my instructors, neither of whom actually made it beyond morning prayers before being sent back to the mess to recover….
G-ARHW – We now own this Dove and it will be returned to flight shortly.
Tom.
Ahh, So the Dove will be above, can it be called?:D
Not good, I am sure that the owners took some comfort that they were safely enconsed in the hangar…
I was in a meeting on one of Norwich Union’s new buildings that day, we watched bits of trim from the roof gently fluttering down into the car park…..
Biggest change after 9/11 is the requirement for all Aircraft Captains to know the procedures for formating with a Fighter escort.
Remember in a Cessna the Carb Heat must be ‘off’ otherwise you will not be able to keep up with the Tornado;)
Both a Bit scary:eek:
I suppose the closest thing to a 4 seat warbird has to be the Yak 18T?
In the words of one flight tester: “the seats are a bit hard, but on a long flight, just roll inverted to ease the pain once in a while…” 😀
I believe it was the one used by Prince Charles in the late 60s to train on, hence the colour scheme (if indeed we are talking about the same machine that I saw!!).
That rings kinda true, I vaguely remember the colouration of that, and this one was mainly Red with some Blue patches.
Completely off thread, I downloaded Christmas snaps tonight and amongst them was this photo my 6 year old daughter took of my (t)rusty steed just before Christmas which has a lovely atmosphere to it…..

I have agreed with my CFI to Re-take Air Law, as that is the bit most likely to have changed in the 20 years since I last took it. Apart from gening up on tropical storms, meteorology hasn’t changed much:D
Could have been, it was certainly more Red than the RAF colours, it took off at around 2:45 from Conington.
It was a lovely day, but very hazy once you got over 2000′, a bit of a temperature inversion
Done!
Nice to receive a Pop up message saying that ‘you have received a message from No 10’:)
For me If I cant have an Otter or Beaver may I please have a Cessna 195. I require something to get my mates in but it must have a big round engine.
Be lucky

I too am a fan of the Airmaster, by all accounts a Gentleman’s Aerial Carriage:cool:
John C,
Good luck in your quest, I too am on the PPL road, although I am trying to re-gain my currency after a 17 year break.
I too have been using eBay to obtain useful items, my 99p Warrior Checklist is my best buy so far!
I did my first proper lesson yesterday, exercises 3-9 (I think!) basically everything up to changing speeds in level flight, next lesson (3rd Feb) is Stalling and then it is circuit bashing to get re-Soloed (is that what it is called?).
Started to feel natural yesterday, which was really re-assuring, although I fluffed my throttle control on landing, which was really annoying as it was my first mistake all flight!
I am really enjoying the Warrior, such a nice stable platform and Rudder trim too!
Have fun, some bits will seem really daunting, but once you have the eye-brain-hand wiring in place it suddenly all makes sense.:D
