Gaydon is now Ford’s main proving ground and R&D centre for PAG (Premier Auto Group) and it also contains Aston Martin’s main factory, and BMW also use it for Mini testing. I had Ford, Jaguar and Landrover as my main accounts for 4 years, and visited Gaydon many times.
The old buildings and airfield causes them quite an issue as they were built to withstand the weight of V bombers so any changes involve significant ground works. They often get RAF aircraft beating up the airfield, with tales of Hercules coming past ‘G’ Deck (the main reception building) at eye level……
Oh it’s a hard life, isn’t it?:D
just think, you could have been on the 07:28 into Kings Cross instead….
We had a thread on this about a year ago, I will see if I can find it…
The main thing I remember about it was the stress involved, and the fact that he used a tube full of red wine to level his workbench…which was drunk once it was level (I must try this in my workshop!).:D
I think he gave up on the composite thing and then went and built a wooden biplane, with some help, at a remote farmstrip?
Did he also lose his marriage mid-way through?
Mad as a box of frogs!
Mally, thanks for reminding us, you can imagine the producer talking to Martin…
I want you to do this series…
No!
We will help you rebuild your stearman?
No, still not interested
OK, we’ll let you fly a spitfire as well?
Oh, alright then, if you insist! 😀
Watch this space – I hope to start on it in a small way over Christmas, and go from there.

One way of avoiding the nappy changing/feeding thang!
watch out for ear-ache though, I tend to get it when involved in winter projects…..especially when the other half is dealing with little ‘uns 😉
A heart-warming site, well done the LPG!
I thought it had re-located to the M11 end of Duxford…..Or is that just the deep maintenance facility 😀
Nice Pics, we drove past on our way to Wood Green Animal Shelter at Heydon, we got a lovely view of the RAF Liveried Dragon Rapide/Dominie taking off.
Even the kids expressed an interest in seeing the new hangar!
That is one hell of a model you have there……….I love the DC3. It’s one of the aircraft I want to build a model of…….that and the Lancaster.
Wouldn’t mind doing a hurricane to come to think of it 😀 😀 😀
Seriously, it looks magnificent 😉
Thanks SP, I love just putting it together like that, it takes up half my workshop. I can’t wait to get the wings sheeted and the Engine Nacelles started.
The guy that designed this preceded it with a 6′ span Lanc, and then did a set of plans for a 9′.
I have cheated a little with this one in that I bought a set of mouldings for it, and a set of CNC parts which speeded up the initial build a lot. (cutting ribs is a thankless task). There is still a lot to scratch build (and muck up, I made the tailcone 3 times before it was right!)
My ultimate goal is a Lockheed constellation of around 9-12′ span, a Retirement project, methinks (in 20 odd years time!)
There are a few very easy to build Hurricanes around (sheet wing, simple electric power) if you look at the Plan listings on the RCM&E and RC Models websites, they have loads, you can then buy the back-issues to give you the build instructions. I have built a few from RCME plans, they cost no more than £20 to build the airframe usually, and are very simple.
I wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing those pics 😀 😀 😀 Mark 😀
Thanks I have glued the fuse halves together and cut it in half front/back. I will fix the rear section to the mechanics, and have the front removeable to allow for switching on battery changes/charging.
I had to halt production to leave the Lama intact for a family party (much kudos from hovering in the lounge over future Brother in-laws parents heads 😀 )
Now that is over I can strip the Lama down and work out the fuselage and undercarriage mountings
Christ 😮 😮 😮
I’m not going to try anything too hasty for quite a while. I want to get used to the handling first and then work my way up.
Good plan!
My wife expected me to crash less as I gained proficiency with my heli, all that has happened is that I try more complex manevures at higher speed, so the crashes are more spectacular!
The most common fixed wing crash I have had is to get the ailerons mixed up on approach, find yourself upside down and diving, and then panic and pull up…. 😮 I can rebuild the cowling on one of my trainers without the plans now!
Also i checked weight limits, i am 16st (0.5 st lighter than this time last week! and dropping lol) LFS were like “ooh thats about the limit, we have had ppl of 16st, but it depends if you will fit in the plane” I am actually not that big for 16st and have fit in a vigilant so i think the PA38 will be no prob, i called ravenair and they said that it would be fine.
James
James,
I did my PPL through an RAF Scholarship in 5 weeks flat on C150s, and I weighed a strapping 10.5 stone then.
After a 17 year gap I have decided to regain my currency, and when I went to book a test flight on a C152, they suggested that people of my ‘height’ would be more comfortable in a PA28-160, it is probably more to do with my Lithe 15.5 stone 😉
They said that I could fly the C152, but not with full fuel and an instructor, but there would be no such issues in the PA28.
I tried both, and found that it was the width at shoulder height that would limit the Cessna, the PA28 is a much more comfortable aircraft in that respect.
In terms of the increased cost over a C152, my aim was to convert to it after currency anyway to fly the family, so that would negate any savings made by doing my re-currency on the C152.
Looking forward to seeing you on a x-country in to Tollerton, sorry Nottingham City Airport, sometime soon.
My contract means that I am splitting my time between London and Norwich, once I am settled in and Xmas is over, I should have the time to get cracking, so be prepared for an unusual arrival in early spring! 😮
