In order to ‘buy’ more time in my workshop to build my RC models I have managed to get my wife into card-making, so have set her a bench up in the spare room and ‘Lent’ her some of my tools…
I have also set up a workbench in the Workshop for the Kids to build ‘Projects’ on, hopefully as they get older they can work independantly whilst I get on on my side… (3 year old son building wooden F1 car, 6 year old daughter building Airfix Sea King, I’m building 1/12 scale Channel Airways Dakota!)
Nice model!
Got me to thinking that a 1/12 scale RC model might be interesting to see fly, I’ll add it to the list for when I finish my Channel Airways Dak.
Perhaps I can Recreate Southend in the early ’70s…The Channel DC4, a Viking and a Trident are also on my to-build list, at least the DC4 and Carvair would share some common parts
Just checked mine, it is XP 763, so can’t help (in polished ali finish with White tail..)
Great Photos Rob, Must either go up there or over to MAM next time I am left Unsupervised with one of my children…
Glad you have got up close and personal with the Mighty Wessex, just a lovely lump of reliable, functional engineering. I only have 120 hours on them (2 in the front, the rest hanging out of the door) but they turned me from Boy to Man… 😀
We must think alike, I got my 7 year old Son a flying suit at Old Warden last year. It wasn’t Pink though!
Also just found him a really nice US style leather look flying jacket at Adams in Ely. Has Mig28(?) andTop Gun stlye patches on it and looks like genuine aged leather (its actually vinyl)…..for £12!! I was so jealous, I wanted one in my size but they only go up to age 10 🙁 Get your Daughter one! :p Here’s a link:
A-ha! I bought my 3 year old the Top Gun Jacket in the Transair catalogue in Sacramento (same place as the flying suit) but for a lot less money than over here! I will have a look at the link….The shop that I bought it from had a Bede BD5J hanging up in the middle!
Thanks, one for Sky+
Racing Shoes
Just had an advert mail from Demon Tweeks, had a look at their racing boots selection, and fairly ordinarylooking, but flame retardent race trainers start from just over £30, might bag me a pair for flying.
Bolle also do aviation glasses with thin stems to fit with headsets
I bought my 6 year old Daughter a Pink Camo Flying suit in the US this year!
I had almost forgotten the “spectators’ enclosure” or “The Waving off Terrace” to give its official title!
Spent many an hour on there in the early ’70s whilst Mum & Dad went for a drink with my Grandad in the airport bar (he worked for Channel) Coke in a real bottle with 2 straws, a bag of crisps and Carvairs what more could a 5 year old want? 😀
There is also an Auster 5 advertised in this month’s Loop
So Oakleys or Ray-Bans for looking cheesy and cool in the cockpit? Or neither?
Where’s the cheapest to get them with a sight ‘script?
Revo seem to be edging their way into the cockpit (sponsor Red Arrows)
Oakleys are good unless you do anything remotely sporty, as the special lens coating scratches very easily. I almost bought a pair for sailing in Greece last year, but bought a cheap american copy (X Loop) instead, I was glad I did when I got smacked in the face by the Boom on an un-intended Gybe, Expensive Oakleys would have been in pieces, but my cheap things hung together, and are still going strong!
You have a bit of a legacy stable there. 😮
I’m torn, I love the old stuff, but I also like to go places in style and comfort, so the Mooney (just out of budget) and the Rockwell Commander (just in budget, but the lower power model) also stirred my interest.
I am also a fan of the Diamondstar/Twinstar, but they are just too far out of budget….
I notice that Oakley now produce Aviation trainers, shoes that is, not Cessna substitutes!
Look like toned-down Motor racing boots, made from flame retardant materials and cost a mere £120
Surely the whole point of the JAA Licencing is to allow for unification of standards and allow cross-border movement with consistency?
Or should I take my rose-tinted specs off again? 😉
