Loop made a satisfying crunch on the door mat yesterday, looking at the classifieds tonight with the imaginary budget (don’t you always do that, and with Motor Boats Monthly and Classic Cars as well…?) for the budget you could get:
    Auster 5 for a mere £18k
    JP Mk3 for £26k
SocataTB 9 or Piper Aztec for £35k

what a stable! all bases covered I think? 🙂

There is also a Stearman for £80k and a Cherokee 6 for £70k if you wanted to blow the budget in one go….appetite whetted?

Mattdean, Getting this Thread back on subject, I would advise doing a forum search on Southend as there are a lot of Forumites with a connection to, or affection for Southend Airport and the old Museum.
My Grandfather worked there up until the Collapse of Channel Airways in the early ’70s, and I have happy memories of being taken out to the hangars around the back to see him at work.
Good luck with your endeavours, and if you have any thoughts or queries, or are ever unsure about what you have been told, post it on here, 2 or three people will have thorough, but differing answers for you! 😀

I suppose a Wessex for me!
Noisy, Odd shape, tough, dependable, guzzles liquid, vents gases from strange places, can be hard to get going and can land tail-first very quickly!

    Great Thread!

At least the Woodman was there to provide appropriate refreshment! 😀 At least,I assume the pub is still there

This was a few years ago, when it was definately still open! I will check with my Dad who still lives in the area
I used to Cycle there every Tuesday night with my Dad and Brother, I convinced him that 14 year olds were legally allowed to drink Cider…

This landing back was the first time my Neighbour had allowed me to land his 182, it was my first landing from the Right Hand Seat and N’stead runway slopes upwards quite alarmingly. What I didn’t realise was that cutting the power on roundout on a 182, also disconnects the wings – it just falls!
Other than that lovely aeroplane to fly, very plush after flying school 150/172s

Thanks for the kind welcome everyone 😀

BlueRobin: I will be learning with Southend Flying Club and most likely in a C150 🙂

😮 Never fun! I remember a few years back when I was flying back from Majorca with a pretty harsh one!

Landing at Southend wasn’t too bad, it was Landing back at Nuthampstead that was the tricky bit…. 😮

I have to agree with the safety issues raised in the previous posts though. Its common sense to wear something that could give you some protection in the event of a fire, even better if it has built in knee boards, pen holders and zip pockets to stop yer loose change falling out.

That’s where the Fat face Cargo Pants come in handy, made of cotton so won’t melt as quickly as some….
I wonder if I can still fit into the bottom half of my 2 piece DPM flying suit? could wear that with a normal shirt on top, trouble is I’d end up looking like Mr Tumnus..
(There is also the 6″ gain in waist measurement in 17 years… 😮 )

    Hi MattDean, Welcome!
Nice Airfield to learn on, nice big runway and some interesting types loitering around too.
I have flown in there twice, once in a neighbours C182 with an immense hangover, and once in a private Hawker 800 😀

What amazes me is that with the popularity and apparent ‘coolness’ of Sailing and Surfing clothes (a wander down Aldeburgh High Street confirms this) that there are no suppliers of Aviation clothing that hit that middle ground between full nomex flying suit and full airline eppoletted shirt? Something you can wear in the pub for your £200 lunch.
Somebody must be able to produce something along the lines of the Fat Face range, but for aviation? (their cargo trousers have the pockets in the right places) I presume it is volume.

In the RAF you weren’t allowed to wear anything that wasn’t cleared by Flight Safety, they even supplied pants. (boxer shorts for summer, long-Johns for winter)

I’d also get to wear a funky brightly coloured flying suit and a bone dome with one of those natty tinted visors :p Oh there would be no end to the fun you could have with a Pitts!

You’ve been talking to Arm Waver again, haven’t you? 😀

At what point/aircraft is it OK to wear a flying suit?

See my post higher up – I am almost 100% certain with my best anorack on that it is Vagabond G-BDVB…. 😀

I am assuming that your best anorack is the most Orangey?
(More Orange than Outspan, Jaffa and Delmonte put together?) 😀 😉 😀

Hmmm tough choice…I would narrow it down to:
Cessna Airmaster, about £65k, great looking but a bit slow/old for everyday use
Yak 18T, about £55k, a 4 seat touring warbird! (well almost) but noisy and probably a bit Military for the wife & family

Robin DR400 £30-80k nice looking, lovely wing, great tourer

My wife would probably prefer the Robin, but I would be hard pushed to decide…Cessna would probably have it on looks…

If the Budget was £1.3M however, I would go for one of the Antilles re-built Gooses (geese?) no arguments

Add Jet Provost and L200 Morava into the mix as well…..
