I remember getting a tour of the factory in the early ’70s when the Chinese Tridents were being built. My Grandfather had 3 or 4 Tridents on the Channel Airways fleet so was often invited to open days, etc.

I must of only been 3 or 4 as it was before Channel went bust, but it is one of the few events I have a recollection of from that age!

The engine controls seem to fetch reasonable money on eBay (£60+) I did think one would make a great light control panel for our lounge, although Wessex Girl probably wouldn’t agree…
The rest I don’t know, I would presume the rotor brake lever and mechanism would be quite sought after?

Flew my Dad into Sywell for Father’s day, the first time he has been there since flying ‘RB in the mid ’60s.

He re-counted his check ride to join the club; He had just started work at the met office at Cardington (putting weather balloons up, etc) and after finishing a Night shift decided to drive up to Sywell to have a look, see. The CFI told him that they were fully booked for check rides and arranged another day. My Dad bumped into a friend there and they decided to drive down to Luton to see some other friends and while they were there had a couple of pints over lunch…
Upon returning to Sywell to pick up his car the CFI saw him and said that they had a cancellation and more or less ordered him, now rather tired, into an Auster….
The CFI’s review was that he wasn’t the best pilot he had ever seen, but he’ll do!

    Great Stuff:D

Did she fly a week or so before Easter at all?

My Daughter (age 7) told me she saw it fly over her school and described it in reasonable detail (she has seen the vids and has a Vulcan teddy)

I like to guess what power setting to pull the throttle off to as I turn Base, trim the Warrior to 75 knots and then see if I can get to the Threshold without having to adjust the throttle or do any pitch changes.

I can then pull the throttle off as I cross the fence and just pull on a little flare as I cross the threshold.

    that’s the theory anyway, doesn’t often happen:o

    Good Luck!
I was in the cadets back in the ’80s, went on Camp to Binbrook, Coltishall, Gibralter and Bruggen, as well as doing my DofE Bronze and getting to Cadet Flight Sergeant. I also did a Flying Scholarship when I was 17, gaining my PPL before I could drive!

You will find that the activities, achievements and responsibility you get as you progress gives you an advantage over other applicants when you enter the job market, demonstrating that you can take on a complex task and see it through to completion and take responsibility for other’s work stands you in good stead.

I joined the RAF as an Air Loadmaster and got streamed onto Choppers, the first 6 weeks of basic training was easier than cadet summer camp!!!

Was a very naughty boy and got thrown out 18 months later though:(

A number have sprung up in the Fens near me. They actually now hinder navigation as it is difficult to decide wich one is which!
Also you need to be very careful when climbing away from PFLs!

I was stationed at Finningley in ’88, the newbie Aircrew Sergeants were in charge of car parking, I had 15 fresh-faced walking cones from Swinderby to help(?) me with mine!

Can’t remember much of the flying display as I had a female visitor for the weekend, so in between getting the cars in and then getting them out, I was mainly attending to her needs back in my house in Gatehouse*:diablo:

I remember not getting all the cars out by the time it was dark, and also sitting by the runway threshold on the Sunday watching departures, including the U2 which was very impressive.

*Gatehouse was the old MQs on camp where the newbie Sergeants lived, see here for a flavour of the ‘culture’:

As I travel to work on the train I normally buy all 3 aviation comics (Flyer, Today’s Pilot and Pilot) I also get Loop through the post and pick Go Flying up from the Flying Club.
I also subscribe to Top Gear and buy Total Guitar and Motor Boats Monthly occasionally..

…Probably enough for significant flight time if I add them all up!

Interesting as I live in Warboys and fly from Conington and never knew that Westwood existed, where is the Officer’s mess?
