Flown in DC3, DC6b, 2 x Grumman Mallards, Piper Cub,Chipmunks and Dragon Rapide
glad to hear that the Wessex is to be saved! 😀
don’t forget that Brampton also has a Phantom
Anyone know the reason for the Canberra lying out on Wyton airfield
Make sure you get the cranes at the docks in, and the road right across the threshold, both added that extra bit of fun to the approach, I flew in there 3 times and only managed to stop before the intersection once!
Some of the local teenagers used the terminal bar as their local, so it was quite posy at 17 to pull up outside in a 150 or 172!
My Dad learnt to fly at ‘Ipswich International’ on Austers in the sixties
Great Pictures Joe!
My Dad remembers seeing the Pou de Ciel hanging in the back of a Garage on Southend High Street in his School days!
Took my 2 year old son to Conington flying Club for Lunch, it looked a beautiful day (always made welcome) and had a nice chat with a guy that turned up in a rather tasty Piper Pacer (Rare Tail dragger variant). He had flown in from Leicester and that it had been complete pea-soup on the drive to the airfield.
He is trying to sell it but was bemoaning the fact that to move it from being ‘N’ to ‘G’ registered would mean the removal of a number of FAA sanctioned mods that drastically improve performance & handling (Tip Vortex generators, LE strakes, etc)
Northampton School of flying have recently moved to Sibson (Peterborough) and have a fleet of aeros:

They have Pitts (£172), Slingsby(£144) and Tiger Moth(£156) available for hire, cheaper on weekdays
Hi Chip!
we are quite a diverse bunch here, flyers, owners, dreamers, has-beens, will-bes, etc. (I probably fit into all catagories!)
I am a recent joiner here too, but have been made to feel most welcome.
The Flying clubs often sell supplies to tyro pilots, but a good source of pilot equipment is Transair:
http://www.transair.co.uk/
They sell almost everything you could possibly need, and many things that you never will!
Wessexboy. The Dak was N5831B “Drag Em Oot” routing from Liverpool via Elvington to North Weald for its annual. Recently imported from the US. It had been doing a poppy drop.
Some pics of it arriving and with the Aces High Dak and resident C54.
YR
YR, Thanks, yes I recognise it now, we often get overflown by the BBMF en-route to displays, so it was a pleasant surprise to see a Dak making low-grunty-piston-prop noises!
It was a bit too far away for me to check my wingtip profile though!
great photos BTW
The MD of Channel Airways (Sqn Ldr Jack Jones) had a painting of Concorde in Channel Airways colours on his Office wall….must put that on my RC must-build list….
Standing in the garden yesterday afternoon, supervising the kids on the climbing frame, whilst sanding my DC3’s Port wingtip to shape, when I heard and saw a DC3 heading south towards Duxford (I presume) I was too far away to see markings….all a bit surreal!
congratulations, were you allowed to use the main runway at Cambridge?
I flew Norwich-Cambridge-Ipswich-Norwich on my X country (July ’86!) and was the first time that I had flown a 172 solo (always with pax in the back before) so I floated the entire length of Cambridge runway before it touched down…made up for it at Ipswich by just kissing the cranes at the docks and stopping before the intersection!
Wall-wall A10 Warthogs in those days, Bentwaters was paranoid after one knocked a Cessna down in ’85
I did an ATC summer camp to Gib in ’85 (20 years ago…..s**t!)
We went just after the manchester disaster, so the 737 wasn’t allowed to use reverse thrust……made the runway feel slightly shorter….
anyhoo, just 3 pics that I found in my collection….
hang on…20p in that pocket, 7p there, check behind the sofa…hey, a quid !:D
there £1.27 will that do?
i tend to start twaddling mid way through the second bottle….. 😀
